Very apt, Hank. . . Silly me-- I missed the "making lemonade out of lemons" reference despite my using that same cliche to the point of it being, well, a cliche. . .
Skip, Carsten, Dr. Seimon, and a save from Hank! This is the colab material I want every season... now we just need a bit of Dr. Orf later in the season and we're good!
Oh so it was you who Hank was meeting at the end of his video, haha. The two of my most favourite storm chasers together, too bad the circumstances weren't better!
Been there myself, Skip. Sometimes you lose the chase, unfortunately. This still is the best possible fail state, as it's just annoying and everyone was safe at the end of the day. And that's what really matters.
Can these storms please choose not to travel 300mph through SE Iowa? I stop for one butter burger and then find my fat @$$ permanently 25 miles behind the main convective line.
What an intense concentration of storm chasing wisdom 😎 Too bad it wasn't in better circumstances. Always remember that if it has wheels, it's going to give you trouble!
Had it happen to me last year. The aggravating part is not losing the wiper blade, it's the windshield getting scratched even if you turn off the wipers immediately upon noticing.
Fun video but I’m pretty sure losing the windshield wiper and the tire weren’t fun. Getting rescued by Mr Schyma was good. Friends are wonderful. 😊 I’ll wait for your next storm intercept 😁
I too missed that tornado. Was sitting about 1 mile to your southwest watching rain curtains in the RFD, which were moving alarmingly fast. Better luck next time!
I was in pretty much the same spot you were and likewise didn't like how much rain there was in the RFD. Decided to try my luck on the southern storm probably less than 5 minutes before tornadogenesis. That feature at 2:10 is in my video; if you were northbound on 61 you probably passed my car pulled over on the shoulder about then; with me over on the other side of the highway shooting.
I got a flat while chasing a few years back. Couldn't get the jack under the car because of mud. Storm coming right at me, but didn't hurt me. Called AAA, waited an hour for a tow truck, which got me going. Many days later I remembered I had been carrying around Fix-a-Flat in the car for 10 freakin years for EXACTLY that scenario and when it happened I forgot I had it.
Lost a wiper. lol I have had that happen before -- mine was an off-brand. I have generally only stuck with Bosch Ikons because they are really reliable and clear well.
At two minutes and thirty two seconds, Anton certainly called that flat tire with the ease of a pro who, "IYKYK," kind of nonchalant demeanor. Can only imagine how many tires these guys go through in a career of storm chasing? Especially considering all the country, county, unpaved, mud and slush, shit slurried, nuclear bomb testing area, undermaintained, unkept and highly neglected roads, if you may be so bold as to even call some of them roads, that these darecho nomads, hail hooligans and tornado gypsies travel upon. Stay safe out there my weatherly friends.
Well I'm also a storm chaser, even though I don't post videos of it on this account, and this has happened to me before too. Or getting stuck in the mud, if you make the suspicious choice of trusting a dirt road when lots of rain has fallen in the days before. It happens. Sometimes you lose or get stuck, that's a big part of why making sure you are viewing storms from a safe position is so important. Yes, that supercell moving northeast at 25mph mid June on the plains might be easy to avoid or even run circles around if you have a good road network, but if you're two minutes ahead of the tornado getting a compelling video and your tire goes flat, are you still escaping it? Would you want to take the chance of the answer being 'no'? I don't, and I don't recommend anyone else take that risk either.
My dream is to chase storms some day. I don't have the vehicle or the means at this time, someday I hope. I have so much respect for what you guys do, you truly are usung heroes. I'm trying to learn as much as I possibly can now, and from now on. This way if i'm ever able to make it happen, I'll have half a foot in the door.
My motivation however, It's not for the views or the fame or popularity. If I can contribute to the science, Or help someone along the way impacted by a dangerous storm, make some good friends along the way, those are just wonderful extras. For me it's simply about getting out there and seeing these things with my own eyes that have fascinated me since I was a child, limited to what is available to me on a Smartphone or television screen.
But once again, I truly want to say much respect, and very much appreciated the things you and the entire storm chasing community do. Please have a safe 2024 and I wish you many more to come.
I put a whole new set of CrossClimate2 tires on and am now carrying the replacement for the tire that blew on this chase as a full size spare in the rear.
Hey Skip, question. Me and my friend started chasing recently in Illinois and been watching your videos on how to chase, is there any place you post on what storm you’re targeting? Thinking about this Sunday. Thanks in advance!
@skiptalbot next time if there is some down time stop and say hi. We went to a spotter class put on by the QCNWS like we do every year. I swear this year half of the video footage was from you.
"Project Farm" just did a test of these products. There's a couple better ones now but Rain-X wasn't far behind and it is a lot cheaper. Still recommended.
I remember when I first discovered rain - ×. Must a been around 2000. I couldn't believe how well the stuff worked . The first time that I used it I drove all day and never turned on my wipers. It's a must to have on hand, especially in these kind of situations . Safe chasing guys !!
Good video, Skip. Did Hank "just show up" or were both of you chasing together on this storm? It was a shame that the storm out-foxed you. . . It reminds me of my lightning hunting in the desert-- I have gotten out-foxed more times than I would care to count.
I had watched the same video of Hank's, which is why my eyes lit up when I saw the video from Skip. Did you see the video concerning working out the speed of one of the Pilger tornadoes? That and the "supercomputer" tornado video, where the meteorologist plugged in meteorological data that a chase team had gathered and the "computer tornado" developed almost exactly the same way as the actual tornado did, are two nerdy but fascinating Hank videos.
Sometimes stuff goes wrong. Last time I lost a tire, I had a spare and a tire iron, but my BF had taken the jack out in the garage a few weeks prior and forgot to put it back, and I didn't think to check. So I was stuck on the side of the road and needed a tow.
"Bummer" on the flat... Been there. If it was a sidewall flat, then the whole tire needs to get replaced. If it's through the treads and not too close to the outer edge, then they just put a plug and/or a patch. It lends more weight to the Scout Motto: "Be Prepared".
Making artful lemonade. See you soon friend.
Get out - ready to come over and help some chasers. I'm also intrigued by your German knowledge :D.
@@marcelbinder2150 are you going make any videos it been 8 years

Very apt, Hank. . . Silly me-- I missed the "making lemonade out of lemons" reference despite my using that same cliche to the point of it being, well, a cliche. . .
Hank “I didn’t want to end up in a Skip Talbot video”😂
😂
"As we can see, Hank had all 4 escape route options but took none of em" 🤣
I swear that's why he mentioned keeping an eye on the power lines so many times.
@@kevinp1046 I was thinking the same thing.
@@intraterrestrial5035 I can hear Skip saying that! XD

This is the in-depth behind the scenes video to the two second cameo at the end of Hank's video. ;)

Wiper: departed windshield.
Air: departed tyre.
r : departed Firestone sign.

That was me on 3/31 last year 😂
I know, right?
Darn, It happens to the best of us. Wish you and Hank could have been up in north central Iowa with me catching photogenic tubes!
Having seen Hank's video before yours a few days ago, this whole scene is so hilarious! Beautiful images as always!
I think the windshield wiper falling off was a sign of things to come 😂 Better luck next time though, guys!
Unintentional, but the last shot of the darkness with the Firestone sign was kind of haunting.
Glad you didn't get run over by a tornado while stranded!
Dude, even your fails are incredibly interesting.
What an intense concentration of storm chasing wisdom 😎 Too bad it wasn't in better circumstances. Always remember that if it has wheels, it's going to give you trouble!

There is something to be learned from this video! Lol Thank You for the up load Skip and stay safe!🌪⚡
As a german guy who is fascinated by tornadoes it makes me kinda happy Hank speaks a bit german.
You didn't disturb any ancient tombs recently, did you?
"We've got RainX"...LOL
I loved everything about this. Hank and all the friendly people.
"It looks paved..."
It’s good to see all you guys back together again,skippy!!!..really enjoy your videos and your chases!!!..be careful!!!😊😊😊👍👍😊😊👍👍
Any random passing by and seeing Hank with that big sack could jump to some conclusions.
Beautiful lightening 😊

Skip I was in the same boat. That RFD was quick to close the curtains on us.
RIP windshield wiper 2024-2024

I didn't get to the flat tire part, bummer. That's happened to me more than once. Potholes!
holy shiet dude, that's some streak of bad luck
Might not have caught the tornado but that was still some beautiful footage. Good stuff.
The drama! The humanity!!!! 😭

Great footage and video as always. Somedays you get the bear, and some days, the bear gets you, I suppose!

Haha... I have had a couple of chase fails recently...this Iowa setup and Southern Indy/Ohio. Normally I have no chase fails...
In which town is that Firestone located?
Did you bork something else on the car that meant it needed towed? I thought a spare tyre would be a 100% must-have in a chase vehicle
No spare tire on a storm chase? 😱
We need longer tornado videos please
Rookie move right there ;)
Found this channel because of Pecos Hank's channel. :-)

Man, that's an unfortunate puncture... At least, Hank and the tow truck came to the rescue.
