Thank you for all you guys do and for being a huge inspiration to my own pursuits of weather education!! My team plans to come together May 2020 and (safely) put our skills together to witness whatever Mother Nature decides to give us!

    Wait. Haxtun CO? That was (one of) my old stomping grounds! My parents, younger siblings and I, used to flip houses up there back in 2015. It's a very small town, not as small as the close neighbor Fleming CO, but nonetheless very small. I think there were only 500-700 people there last I checked.
    There are some tornados there, so folks there range from very serious about storm safety to nonchalant. I remember one time in late spring, an itty bitty tornado developed right above the house we were working on. All the neighbors came out to see as the tornado dissipated. We were living in a camp trailer at the time, and four of our neighbors came over that day to tell us if there ever was a serious tornado, they had an underground bunker and we were invited, encouraged, to come and shelter with them. We never had to use the shelter, but there was a big tornado. It was about a year later, (2016) and we were now working on a house in Fleming. My dad had cut a hole in the floor and was working on the plumbing underneath. The house had a very deep basement, so fixing the plumbing was relatively easy. Well, the wind picked up and the sky grew dark, my brothers and I were outside picking up trash when the sirens went off. We raced inside and looked out the window. Sure enough, there was a *huge* funnel about 10-20 miles away. My parents ushered us to the plumbing hole, and told us they were going to stand at the door and watch. If they came running in we were to get down in the hole and sit in a "earthquake" position. The tornado never hit the town, and stayed far off before dying, but that was my corner of CO tornado experiences.
    Great vid Skip! It was super cool to see Hank chasing with you.

    I drove 40 miles on those mudd pudding roads before ending up in Imperial , drove over that same hail,,, being from upstate NY i find this cool as hell we were on the same roads. good stuff!!!!!!!!! hey being from NY I'll give you a tip, get yourself a pair of SNOW tires, not all seasons, SNOW TIRES....you'll be able to do 60 on those slick back roads, as long as the car is front wheel drive.

    • @skiptalbot

      Thanks, Shane. I've got a set of Yokohama all terrain on my awd Forester. They're great on a wet highway, wear well, and do help on the unpaved grid. And mainly because the stock Duelers the Forester came with are total dogshit in the rain. The Forester is light and whippy though, so I still avoid a wet unpaved road if I can help it. If I did a bunch of driving through the slop I'd definitely look into your suggestion more. But >98% of my chase miles are on the highway and I don't want to wear through tires doing 20,000 miles down I-80 just for that one stretch down Bob's Rd. But if that 2% on unpaved roads meant getting the shot or not, I'd do it. I can't think of a time where I really missed out because of my tires. Maybe Tescott back in May of '18? I turned around and got a backrow show because of the roads. But my philosophy is that better off roading/mud capability just gives you more rope to hang yourself too, as in overconfidence attempting roads you should still just avoid. It's game over once you slide off those domed roads into the ditch.

    1:53 what makes this cloud get so low? downdraft? what about the updraft, wouldn't that block those clouds from getting Lower? this is confusing to me... tornadoes start from the ground up right? ohh and include the suction motion UP from a tornado. so how can clouds get wrapped around inside the funnel?

    • @skiptalbot
      @skiptalbot  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, that's right. The storm has a rainy, cool downdraft from the forward flank. The storm's updraft then starts to feed off of this rain cool air fanning out from the north. As it rises in the updraft, this moist, rain cooled air condenses at a much lower height than the environmental inflow the storm was originally feeding on, and so this makes cloud form at lower heights.

    you would think that all the storm chasers would fabercate a plexy glass shields to go over the windows so that the hail doesn't bust out or crack the windows

    • @skiptalbot
      @skiptalbot  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Some chasers do just that. I've cracked a windshield twice and never lost a side window in 15+ years of chasing. It's not a big problem unless you go looking for the big hail. And putting plastic over the glass introduces all kinds of new problems.
