Oto-san is father in Japanese. “To-chan” is also father.
Kids often use chan for their parents regardless of meeting them.

@@Jack_Ss actually only elites knew about garp's relation to luffy bcoz only they knew full name of garp. You can see Coby knew luffy's full name but he didn't know full name of garp so , in water 7 when luffy calls garp grandpa every one was in shock even the Marines were in turmoil .
Image if Ivan somehow made a one-way contact, telling Dragon that his son is about to join the Marineford War. I wonder if the outcome of the fight change.

Like if Dragon gonna act, there will be a meeting to decide if they should take the action or not, and Sabo upon seeing the image of Luffy and Ace will remember about their bonds (just like in the story). After that, with Sabo insist on going to safe Luffy and Ace, by himself, and Dragon's son on the line, most of the higher up of the Revolutionary Army will make a move.

@omarbest5834 after so many years, what Luffy had suffer from Garp. And having no support from his own Father, I don't think he will be happy to see him at all. Even surprising he came to save him in Logue Town from Smoker. When Luffy had a big problem in Marineford, or in Dressrosa, or even in Wano. Same challenge will probably have Usopp, when he will meet his father Yassop.
It's funny how Luffy didn't even met his Dad and he calls him "to-chan"... And IIRC in some cases putting "chan" after some honorifics is a type of kindness towards that person right?
It's about the most casual and endearing way you can refer to your father in Japanese.
It's pretty much the equivalent of calling your dad "pops", which makes it even funnier imo.

what is most important and greatest in this story is how mangaka Oda-sensei created the storyline, where a story at the beginning and each character's past will correlate with other characters who will appear in the future plus a story in the middle and end then becomes a very complex story that makes sense and can be accepted by most people...
and I think Oda-sensei is really great at making this One Piece manga 👏😭👍
