  • For today's GrumpyTim video we're taking a look at a rotten window I repaired (or restored depending on how you look at it). I actually had a pair of these to do - the first one was too bad so I made a new window from scratch, but the second one had enough goodness left to be restored.
This video isn't intended to be a "how to" or instructional video - it's filmed in a relaxing ASMR style (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) and there's no commentary, just the occasional sheep or bird in the background.
For the putty and paint removal, I used an infrared paint stripper - the Speedheater Cobra - this is the smallest one in their range and is probably better suited to detail work like this, rather than stripping large areas of paint. I'll put some links to some of the tools I used later in this description. As with any work on old paint, you should assume that the paint contains lead and therefore make sure you don't breathe in the dust or the fumes when removing the paint. The Speedheater makes the process of removing old putty easier and less likely to break the glass (important when working on old windows with lovely old blown glass panes), but don't believe for one second that it's suddenly a simple task, it still takes lots of time and patience.
Traditional wooden windows last far longer if they're painted with linseed paints - linseed paints went out of fashion when modern, faster drying paints were introduced but linseed is making a comeback in the restoration world these days.
I bought my Speedheater Cobra from the UK distributor Tensid UK.
