    Winch controller questions: IMO. How do you work a remote switch with gloves on? You have to take your eyes off the operation to make sure you're pressing the right button. With a switch, its tactile - all done through the feel of the fingers. What if someone picks it up and runs the winch at the wrong time? If it falls in the mud? Remote switchers inside the relay boxes are prone to water damage. Remotes are horrible things and not suitable for safe winching. Okay for the very experienced. Dangerous for the newbie.

      How do you press the button?…by pressing it. It’s still tactile. One button for in, one for out. Just seems like you just want to use the wired controller out of choice…and that’s fine, but the other reasons are grasping at straws IMO. I dare say that even with the wired controller, right before you winch on or out you’re going to glance at the controller…same as a remote.

    C'mon Andrew. Your reason for not wanting a wireless remote winch is flawed. You can just as easily arrange who manages the winch wireless remote as that of the wired control. If you don't have that sorted, then it's a user problem. But like you, I do like the winch control box hidden, and extending the control wire plug where it can be easily access is a must.

    Hi Andrew - I see other Aussie channels (4WD 24-7), All 4 Adventure and even Ronny Dahl) all lauding remote controls from a safety point of view. During difficult winching operations you can put some distance between the winch cable/ rope and yourself so that if it or its anchor point let go you are out of the 'kill zone' as they say. For me it is far more important to be paying attention to what you are doing than whether you are using a remote or cable controller.
    Having said all that I have only used my winch once in 30 years - halfway up a hill stuck in a washout between Ruacana and Epupa falls, I try not get stuck. Which is why I like your troopie build I have always travelled as light as possible - which helps in not getting stuck.

    Wouldn't the cable winch control put the person in charge of winching in the death zone, remote control they can be in a safe position. But I note your point as well.

    • @kadmow
      @kadmow 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      (hence why the person controlling the vehicle on which the winch is mounted should ideally control the winch from the drivers seat. - If a "remote" party wants/needs to be director of recovery operations, their deal tool of use should be a 2-way radio, issuing edicts for the participants in the saga (radio coms to spotters, etc is very useful ).. ( NB. if the Wireless (pocketable) remote doesn't have 2-button safe operation it can be a hazard for inadvertent ""pocket presses" - thereby best kept in a safe place when not immediately needed) )
      Whenever people are setting; anchors, pulleys, redirects or lines, the winch "should" - not saying this is in any way standard practice - be declutched or otherwise deactivated... (accessible lockable disconnect isn't far from what would be "industry standard" - if it were industry. lol.. )

    I suspect most people over-estimate because they don't take into account the weight that is removed when you replace parts. The bulbar might weigh 60kgs - but you probably remove 15kgs of bumpers and supports so you net out at 45kg. Similar with most of your other mods - you gain weight but not exactly kg for kg - have to account for what is removed in fitment.

    At 9:42 when you showed the plug, its just a 4 pin XLR type. Commonly used for power supplies in AV. Easy to purchase a premade extension wire, or make one yourself with some Neutrik plugs. Did find it a bit weird though, as those things just rust in normal studio applications, let alone getting wet in the wild.

    Matt's off-road recovery has had multiple videos where his and his son's winch remotes have interfered with each other and only one winch worked at a time. This all happened while doing a recovery of vehicles in precarious situations, where having two winches running was required simultaneously, so I definitely recommend having a cabled connection.

    • @MegaWilderness

    I recently installed a 14,500lb winch on the Silverado and needed to relocate the solenoid box, similar to the way you did. I also extended the low amperage wiring (like you did in your video)....BUT...I did one important variation....
    One of the wires is a constantly "live" wire and in an effort to make the winch unable to be used by some nasty mongrel, I utilised a in-cab switch.
    This means that the winch cannot be used via the plug-in port without activating the in-cab switch. However, the 2 cordless remotes will still work. I understand what you're saying about the wireless remotes being potentially dangerous, BUT they do enable the operator to stand away from the "line-of-fire" in the event of a mishap. With the cord-operated remote, you always need to be within close proximity to the front of the vehicle with all the risks that that entails.

    Good on ya' for trying different stuff.
    It would be very easy to, as some other "influencers" do, just throw the same old shopping-list of parts at every new vehicle that comes your way.
    It's good to give alternative manufacturers some publicity AND it also deters established manufacturers from relying on their reputation instead of constantly developing better products.

    People overestimate their own driving capabilities and underestimate others’ abilities. In this case it sounds like people overestimate their ability to load the vehicle smartly and underestimate other people’s ability to do the same. But the catch is that this results in underestimating the weight (if you do it) and overestimating the weight (if you’re looking at what other people put in.)

    I was originally going to flat out disagree with your wired vs wireless stance. But then realised that you are still going to carry the wireless one so the option is open to you in the future, so really it is a harmless preference that you are choosing.
    I will share that last time I had to run a winch line it was up an extremely steep incline where it had started snowing mid way through my travels. I had to basically run my winch cable constantly out in front under free spool but it was so steep that I couldn't actually pull myself and the line under free spool, so I had to use the winch to spit the line out for me. This was made a lot easier with the wireless controller in my hand as I pulled it out 25m. I could have just spat the line out in front of the car first with a wired controller then dragged it up after the fact but my winch line was in different places / distances each time so being able to just let out what I needed just made the 5/6 pulls I had to do that little bit easier.

    Fully agree re the use of remote for winching. What if there was radio intereference from someone elses device, which may trigger the winch? I would find a way to introduce a remote cut off switch to disable the remote function so that accidents do not happen due to radio interference.

    Nothing too crazy but just letting you know it’s worth checking and cleaning out once in a while due to the increased exposure to the elements

    I enjoy these videos greatly I know in a previous video you were wanting a ( pickup/Ute) did you ever consider a cab through conversion? That’s what it’s called in the United States anyway you essentially turn a pickup/ Ute into an suv/wagon if you were wanting a box/camper you can gain access even in a regular cab it would need a little extra frame support because the bed and cab often move independently then remove the rear window do some cutting leave a small edge for bolts and seals and or welding and there you have it thanks again for the incredible videos

    I extended my winch control to top of grill and put a gigglepin hd relay behind headlight on the inner wing. The winch was already installed on the vehicle when I purchased it. It had a remote controller which I only discovered when I went to test the winch. It had been left in the centre cubby box. I switched the master switch and the winch spooled in straight away. It dragged the hook through the fairlead before I could turn the master switch off.
    I discovered the remote under some paperwork had pushed up against the side of the box and had switched itself on. Needless to say while rebuilding the broken winch I removed the remote wiriring and threw the controller away.

      The TH-cam channel Matt's Off Road Recovery found that their remote winch controllers interfered with each other. They had a recovery that required two winches, but they could only pull in one winch line at a time because the wireless controllers interfered with each other. They were even different brands of winch.

  • @BittnerBuddenbrock
    @BittnerBuddenbrock 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I see the argument for NO radio controlled winch switch as very valid. More than one winch involved in a recovery!? My choice would also be a cable connected controller!
    The on/off switch in the car on the dash for the winch controller is a good idea to stop people "playing" with the winch AND an emergency off-switch for the driver independent of who has the controller!
    What I do not follow is the importance of the, I would say, over-kill of lights! Noone in his/her right mind will drive in the dark off a proper road except in an exceptional emergency! For those rare cases are all those lights? I have two additional lights on my cars for emergencies, last time used? Can't remember - I avoid emergencies!
    For just looks those lights are too expensive, aren't they?

      A remote controller cannot be used easily with gloves, without looking at it. Switch controllers are tactile - its all done with feel through the fingers. A remote with no definite on-off actions are horrible and I do not wish to use them.

    • @4xoverland
      @4xoverland  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. And the cab is inside the car, from where the winch cannot be seen. And nor can the wheels be seen, or the way the rope is spooling etc. Ive always winched from in, out and around the vehicle, and if it's a tough pull, the bonnet raised to protect the windscreen and driver in the event of equipment failure. To my thinking, the very last place to put a winch controller is inside the cab.

    Automobile makers are saving weight with High Tensile Strength steel. I wonder what it costs as an alternative.
    Surprising about front:rear weight additions.
    They really designed the bar to give it a look. It reminds me of a GMC.
    The railways use beltpacks (radios on a belt) to control switching locomotives. The person with the belt is the locomotive engineer. Communications with yard workers would remain the same.

    All winching operations you perform are operated by a remote switch, you are merely saying you prefer a tethered remote vs a wireless one. To assume the operator is more or less involved based on wired or wireless remote isn’t a valid assumption.
