I'm only just catching up with your stories and enjoying them very much. I love that you're following you dreams, and that you're able to bring them to us. I've always said that everything with camping is a compromise. Every serious trip I've done so far (I'm 54) I've changed my mind with how to do it. Much to the better half disgust. :-) Experimenting can get expensive. What bought me to you was my decision to order a troopy. This will become our retirement vehicle after the I work my last 5 years to pay off the lease. The decision came about due to the reliability, and the load and towing capacity. I never wanted to tow but it's just easier for our preferred style of travel. With the mate, I just set a stretcher swag under the awning. The MAP. I have one the same. It started during my motorcycle travels 20 yeas ago. It's in a frame and I remove it to add each trip. I have a different colour now for the 4WD travels. I have ridden in each state. One trip was a lap with camping gear in a little trailer that took 62 days in 2013. Another down the middle in 2018 and a lap of Tassie in 2010. As you said, there's still some big gaps, so now the 4WD has come to the fore. Thanks for the experiments, the ideas and your candour.

You can get aluminium extrusion that the LED strips slot into which is a much more robust mounting system, they also have a light diffuser on them so that the light isn't so harsh on your eyes

def use the aluminium extrusion with diffuser and have a look on alibaba can get 2.4ghz wifi remote RGB controllers so no need for line of sight and can be done fair distance away remote looks user friendly too, Tillyslights in osbourne park seem to have everything you would need also.

Just got back from the weighbridge. 2003 disco 2a. Bigger tyres, aftermarket suspension, fully loaded for a long expedition. Custom interior. Full barwork, lights, roof rack, 12v system, winch, the works etc. Still 160kg below factory GVM. Stoked!! If you need some tips Andrew, shoot me a message 😉 however I do run the car totally stripped out...no insulation whatsoever. Not for everyone 😅

I agree with all - use the extrusion with diffusers. Also you can get a remote receiver that connects to your phone via bluetooth. I've used it and it works well. It even has a microphone on it and you can set different lighting effects based on music or noise picked up by the mic.

Although a bit pricey, I would recommend Philips hue lights. They offer RGB led strips and a whole range of other lights that can be networked wirelessly. You can control them via wireless buttons, sliders, and of course your phone. You can create scenes (presets) for outdoor and indoor, add pir sensors, etc.

Hardkorr strip lighting, one strip will do white, natural and orange light, you can connect together as many as you like and comes with an external on/off dimmer and colour selection controller… I fitted some to my awning and it’s made a huge difference to be able to undo the awning bag, press a button and have lights straight away.

Andrew, I had very similar considerations for the interior lighting in my camper. I also went with an RGB led strip, *however* I used a high-strength, matching width, double-sided tape to adhere them, rather than the garbage adhesive they come with. Additionally, you can get RGBWW (WW for warm white) strips which have alternating RGB and dedicated white chips. Highly suggest the warm white, specifically, as it's a much more pleasing white vs the typical led whites.

I’m watching this lighting conundrum with eager anticipation. I’m puzzling over the very same issue right now converting a brand new van to a camper.
I’m thinking Wifi modules hooked up to a phone app connected to something like a set of dimmable terralume rock lights.

Stedi make RGB rock lights, designed for underbody but I mounted one to the tailgate on my D4 and it was perfect for night time lighting out the back of my vehicle for the drawers and table, I feel 2-3 of them in the interior might work alright. Only concern would be creating hot spots of light but mine seemed to diffuse well enough.
As for the strip LED's the standard glue on them sucks, even if it adhered at first guarantee the first hot day they would come loose, you would need to go and buy a decent double sided tape to apply them with.

We use the same RGB Led lighting on the campervan. The one I ordered has a Bluetooth app that also allows you to adjust the lights from outside the vehicle. it has about a 5 meter range. We had to use some silicon to mount the lights to the caravan as we had the same issue with the glue. they have been up for 12 months with out any issues & they are externally mounted.

You'd need to run a little portable wifi modem (no internet connection required) but I use laser LED smart bulbs. They run on household voltage and household fittings but the do all different brightness and colour and can be controlled simultaneously from your phone. Setup of 3 bulbs cost less then 50 bucks, bit more with the fittings I'd guess.

@Andrew. Your idea to use RGB remote controlled light strips is exactly what I am in the process of doing. However, I suspected the tape would not handle the Australian heat. My plan is to use aluminium channels which can be purchased specifically for led strips including a diffuser which slides in the channels. The strips can then be affixed into the channels (e.g. with zip ties or heat resistant glue) and the channels can be screwed onto the interior panels. I own an LC76 so same principle as a troopy in terms of fixing points.

Hardkorr Lighting do everything you want without a remote. You would need to source a Bluetooth module or wifi module of some description. I'm sure Heiner would know of such a product. The switching system Hardkorr uses is hardwired and not remote, but does change colour and dim... So close yet so far.

Thanks for the journey on how to dress up a vehicle for touring. I am from Costa Rica Central America and love to travel to see nature. My country is SMALL compared to many of the places you have traveled. However, it has a unique option with several micro climates, active volcanos, 2 ocean shores and the highest biodiversity per square kilometer. It is a place to travel short distances but be able to see so many wonders. I strongly recommend to have a look. You could visit so many places in a week. An example you could have breakfast at the sun rise on the Caribbean travel trough the rain forests and have dinner at sun set in the pacific coast go from 0 m to 3000m over see level in 2 hours, visit 4 active volcanos in a place where 30% of the land is national parks protected. Just a suggestion. Have a great trip

Hi Andrew. If you were happy with the remote controlled strip lighting the simple fix, I’ve found, is to use 3M brand double sided tape.
It’s readily available from most auto stores and I haven’t had any trouble in all the applications I’ve used it.
The key is to wipe the surface with alcohol wipes or preptone.
    I’m loving this build series.

Try 3M VHB tape for the strip lights, it will hold. It’s designed to hold panels together on the interior of things such as aircraft or ambulances and has about as much or more holding power as rivets. As for the remote switching of lights, we have a few options here in the USA such as SPod. It’s basically a distribution block already wired with switches, relays, and a circuit board. You can have physical switches in the vehicle as well as wirelessly connect to the system with your phone or tablet via an app which then allows you to remotely switch on or off, dim, and several other options (note that you can connect most any accessory to this switching system) Not sure if they ship over there but it’s worth a shot, they’re good people.

The led strips did the same in my vehicle. I stuck them with clear silicone sealant. Also the diffuser strips will give a nicer finish. The led strips can also be controlled from a phone app but you would need some sort of WiFi hotspot for the phone and lights to connect to.

if you aren't aware, those led light strips are typically marketed to and used by the computer world. people want shiny lights in their pc cases.
the lighting system you describe is used by the motorhome industry. they use "multi-plex" wiring for all the lights and attach them to some kind of smart panel. a popular one is "firefly."
they have an app you can use to control everything from as well. no idea what the cost on that is or if they have setup that would let you forgo the touchscreen(smart panel). you could do your inside and outside lights as two different groups, have all the control that you wanted and do it from your phone. again, not a clue what the price on something like that is. pretty sure firefly is an australian company though, if that helps.

I've been using their LED light bars for some time. Switchable for white, warm white and orange. You can add on multiple 50cm bars in line to the same switch. Now, it isn't a remote switch, but the switch can be mounted somewhere convenient, like the rear barn doors.

You might try some hard mountable Rock lights that are controlled via Bluetooth from your phone

Expedition essentials makes a flip down table with a stove or that holds a stove I think it will work for what you want. Expedition essentials is local to me in Ferndale Washington United States. They make nice things I really like their paper towel holder.

My suggestion on campground lights: weak, non dimmable for reliability and placed bellow your eye sight, pointing down. ex: under side steps or bumpers lighting only the ground so you can see where you put your feet. This never blinds you and its' also stealthy in a relatively short distance. It's the only light I always keep on all night until going for bed.

I know you can't go many places with this medical crisis but your emphasis has changed so much since I followed all of your early books in South Africa which I've still got. All this stuff on cooking/lighting/aesthetics, etc., is most definitely what 4x4 travelling is not about in my opinion. Van Zyl's Pass, a potjie, my old Defender and good company is.

Not sure if its been mentioned already but have you thought off using a smart home system?
Wifi smart breakers, Sonoff seems to be the better one.
Yes you'll have to have your phone with you and probably a wifi router but the automation and endless control you'll have just from your phone will be crazy.

Try self powered wireless light switch. Its currently used for house electrical purpose. Pretty sure the genius at Klarmann can work something out.

I'm surprised that it's taken you so long to discover the strip leds. They've been a favourite of the budget builder for the last ten years. The receiver is the weak point. You can get ones with Bluetooth. Upgrade with some good 3m double side tape.

I've had LED Strips in my workshops for years. But never in a vehicle.

@@4xoverland I see. It does put them under a lot more stress. I'm currently using an LED strip reverse and tail light unit for internal and external use on my discovery 2. Built in red and white lights, much more robust, excellent coverage, come with a protective cover and 3m tape. Not dimmable but a really comfortable light level. They're about 1 metre long each. Not sure how you'd remote it but they take up almost no space. I I use on off on switches. Maybe worth a 5 minute look.

Hello Andrew, just a thought to consider while designing the drop-down stove.
With electric hobs, depending on the material they can keep heat for much longer than you'd like, so if you wanted to pack up and go quickly after a cooked meal, and cant wait for the elements to cool down, you'd need some form of protection between the hotplates and the part hanging off the door.
Or you could release the product with the warning "Wait until your heating elements are cooled down before packing away."
Alternatively, you could have a cover plate that would normally act as a bench on top of the stove, which would have heat insulation underneath, allowing you to chop, flip the cutting board up and go straight into cooking, then just flip the cutting board back down, give it a wipe down and fold the whole thing away. This would likely require some form of completely custom-made stove, as finding one that will fit in a slim drop down table while having the extra insulated cutting board layer might be difficult.
Hope I'm explaining this right. Good luck Andrew.

I use LED strip channels, makes it easier to mount and spreads the light a bit and I like that. I also dont glue them down, that makes them rattle a bit in the channel, but I don't mind.

Re. lighting: A 'Shelly RBGW2' controller might help solve your problem (available from a number of places in Australia). Of course you wouldn't need the WiFi function but you could wire a number of physical switches conveniently located around the vehicle back to the controller. The negative is that you'd need to play a sort of 'morse code' on the physical switch to activate each lighting mode ('scene'). That could be obscure for other people using your vehicle. That said you could also put certain smarts based on time of day - maybe automatically choosing red after midnight or automatically turning off at sun rise and such like.

That LED light strip is just fine. Just investigate aluminum extrusions with a diffuser. Better controlled with WLED app on phone and use a Digi Uno or Digi Quad to drive it wirelessly.

Hi Andrew for your lighting, this might be a couple months late but i would look at a product called Type S - it a underglow lighting used in the drifting world. Auz show stock the product and the quality it amazing.

Here in Canada we have some nice options for aluminum rock sliders. Plenty strong for overlanding applications and no corrosion from all the road salt they put down in winter!

Supernova lights sell fully dimmable and colour selectable rock lights for those purposes. I just bought some to be used in the exact way you described.
