Comparing The Differences of a Berkeley 12JG vs Dominator 12S Jet Drive, Pump Comparison

- Recently after refurbishing and rebuilding my Berkeley 12JG Jet Drive, I was removing the existing Dominator 12S from my boat to swap in the fresh Berkeley unit. While I had the two pumps out of the boat I took the opportunity to film a quick video outlining the differences that I am aware of between these two pumps.
In short the Dominator pump is a newer, updated version of the Berkeley pump. A lot of the parts are interchangeable between the two pumps. Dimensionally they are nearly the same, with the exception of the bowl diameter on the Dominator unit, which is larger than the Berkeley. In regards to my Dominator pump, someone at some point in its life has turned down the OD of the bowl to match the diameter of the Berkeley pump, allowing it to be fully interchangeable with the transom cover.
If you know of other differences in the two pumps please let me know in the comments section below!

About AutoTechNick:
Growing up in rural Oregon I was always around Hot Rods & Race Cars. I imagine my early exposure to this culture ignited a spark of interest in cars, which remains my passion to this day.
🎓 I am a proud Alumni of Wyoming Technical Institute, where I studied Automotive Technology, Performance Engine Building & Street Rod Fabrication. In addition to “Wyo Tech”, I graduated from the BMW Service Technician Education Program. More commonly known as BMW S.T.E.P.
🏎️ I spent nearly 10 years working in various BMW dealerships as a Master Technician. After a move back home to the PNW I found myself no longer servicing German-made machines, but now working with Italians. I spent nearly another 10 years as a Ferrari Master Technician, & Shop Foreman at a local Ferrari dealership.
🏆 I was selected by Ferrari as one of 12 technicians worldwide to compete in the “Ferrari Testa Rossa Awards”, consecutively for 4 years in a row. Finishing in 3rd place in 2016, & in 2019 I was able to place in 1st. Winning the competition & earning the title of the Top Ferrari Technician in the world!
🚀 As my time with Ferrari came to an end, a new career path awaited me…. Aerospace. I am currently working at Blue Origin, helping to build & develop the BE-3PM and BE-U rocket engines.
With my new career path, I needed an outlet for my automotive passion, thus the reason for this channel…

A lot of work and customizing people put into these babies. Swapping this and that, mix matching and make a Frankenstein pump that absolutely hulls as$!
I love these old school jet boats.
I use to rebuild electric motors of all sizes up to 500 hp.
All kinds of various pumps and gearboxes.
Replacing shafts, bearings, packing, mechanical seals, wear rings, trimming impellers. I miss it.
Looking for one of these old school boats currently.
East coast they’re slim pickings… love the videos! 👍🏻🤘🏻👏🏻
Thanks man. I was looking where to add oil to my dominator pump😂
Nice to see some jet stuff. I sold my Daytona 12 years ago. Bottom work spoon etc was done by Ervin caps
Thanks for covering these differances !!!!
Absolutely, I am glad that you enjoyed it!

I see you went to Enzo. Did you go to the Enzo track. It has a vineyard there. I got a case of Enzo Ferrari wine from him back in the 70s. My buddy was a driver for them. Dick furgerson.
Ken, By chane are you refering to Maranello? If so, yes I have been fortunate to have been there on multiple occasions. I have been able to tour the factory several times, and also see Fiorano as well. Its a pretty special place. Highly recomend that anyone with a remote interest in cars finds there way to that region of Italy.
The Berkeley 1 piece bowel is suppose to be more efficient, but then you can't add a droop snout. I guess it depends on what you want.
Great video
🙏 thank you.
No problem I rebuild my pump with a inducer and a b impeller. May have to take it apart again if that impeller doesn't.
Putting an LS1 on my Berkeley. With a droop snoot.
In a 15 ft alloy boat.
NZ hunting wagon.
That seems like it will be a fun little combination!

Is a dominator a different brand or just a a different model of berk. ?
They are different Brands of pumps.
Berkeley is just a manufacturer of pumps. Their models are along the lines of 12JG, 12JE, 12JF etc. I believe that Berkeley is now owned and ran by the owners of CP Performance Marine.

The "Dominator" Jet drive is manufactured by American Turbine.

When I rebuilt my guiding jet boat then went from outboard to inboard, I used a Berkeley JG pump I bought used then rebuilt the pump and added the SS 3 blade inducer that made a world of difference stopping all cavitation.
Awesome! Yeah, the inducers help a lot. It's not often you can do a modification like an inducer and have nothing but benefits with no negative side effects! No reason not to put one in.
@@AutoTechNick I have a way to judge the benefit of a inducer because I ran a 22 foot Red Dot jet boat for my guide service with a 351 Ford and a Berkely JG pump than was old school No inducer.
The cavitation was horrible and worst on long turns.
Now with my 28-foot jet boat for my fishing guide work I have a 500 HP 1969 402 Big block Chevrolet powering a JG Berekley pump that has the inducer and Hi performance intake that scoops up water to the inducer and impeller.
Not a single issue with cavitation and it goes like a creaming raped Ape from the start to where I'm not that brave to find out how fast the freaking jet boat can go !
50 mph with 1/4 throttle has been my limit with 7 fishermen on beard all getting a thrill.
I've run at a speed when I stop my fishing clients' eyes are teared up and they are laughing and having a great jet boat ride on top of going salmon fishing.
Photos of my jet boat during and after the rebuild can be seen on my Instagram page at dwayneb1959
Your boat looks really good. I bet you are having a blast scaring the unassuming customers!! 😂
@@AutoTechNick The last of the rebuild of the boat is to touch up and paint but that can all be done a little at a time so now the boat is a working guide boat.
That 1969 Chevrolet Big block 402 is just as wicked in the jet boat as it was running my 1972 3/4 truck .
I ran the 402 in the truck until it was tired then the 402 was saved for another day project then the truck got a 454 then sold.
And the dominator has more vanes then the berk.
Ken, That is not true for all Dominator bowls. Both the Berk Bowl and the Dom bowl that I have featured in this video only have 8 vanes..
The "Aggressor" Bowls do have 9 vanes, but all Dominator bowls do not.
~ Nick
I have owned both and for big power the Berkley pump split bowl is better.
Bull shit
Not even a little bit. Dominator is better in every single way for big power. Better surface area and extra bolt for a pop off , stronger suction housing, and light years better on the bowl. And they come stock with a stronger shaft. Berkeley is great for a 400 HP mini day cruiser, thats about it. If you put 1500 HPs to A stock Berk, yer swimming back to the trailer.
Waste of time if they aren't compared for actual performance.
Berkley are junk.
