His apology during the interview sounded very genuine. I have some respect for how he handled thi- as there’s a drive into deep left field by Castellanos, it will be a home run… and so that will make it a 4-0 ballgame. I don’t know if I’m gonna be putting on this headset again. I don’t know if it’s gonna be for the Reds, I don’t know if it’s gonna be for my bosses at FOX.

Lmao how. He legit said "that's not who i am, i have people who will say that and back me up, also I'm sorry to the people who sign my paychecks."
If it's not who you are and you understand why it's wrong, you don't say it. Also "i have black friends" is no longer a valid defense. Also "i am sorry because I realize that this is gonna effect my pay."
The apology fell far short. However the steps after have been good.

What Thom said/did was reprehensible, but it shouldn’t be unredeemable. I think people tend to forget that Thom and so many others that’ve made mistakes are still real people that are only human as well. It’s easy to say I don’t forgive you forever and then move onto your day to day not thinking of it again. Then maybe a year later saying nope still don’t forgive you. All while he’s clearly sorry for what he’s done, and paid the price every day for it, and made positive changes in his life. We need to start allowing these people to grow from their mistakes.

Brennaman is a famous announcer who has had 30 years calling professional baseball and football games. He is worth about 3 million dollars from all his time in the broadcast booth. He broke the single most important rule in broadcasting, your mic is always assumed to be hot, and don't say something you wouldn't say to a room full of young kids. He's had his time in the biz and there are plenty of deserving people to fill the role of broadcaster. After 30 years in the biz, let's not give him his coveted job back, with all perks and privilege, just to give him a second chance, when there are plenty of non-millionaires so deserving of a first chance. Give a young, hopeful, would-be broadcaster a chance, who wouldn't dream of saying something as uncouth like Thom said so casually, in full display of his privilege...

You can accept his apology, but it doesn't mean he deserves to be a professional broadcaster again. Holding the job is a privilege, not a right. He can feel sorry, and apologize till he is blue in the face, but if he gets his job back, a highly sought-after job, its not really a punishment for breaking a cardinal rule of broadcasting...always assume the mic is hot, and never say anything you wouldn't want a room full of kids to hear. Accountability means accepting the consequences for the actions you choose, and it would be a real slap on the wrist if he just got handed the position again. He's made a few million after 30 years in the booth, time to give someone else a chance...

I understand what he’s saying as an athlete about how you use certain words you probably shouldn’t around your buddies because you’re just messing around or whatever. You’re young. You’re stupid. You don’t think about what it can do to someone. I think Thom truly means well. I feel like he knows he messed up. He knows he made a mistake. He’s owned up to it. He’s doing great things to try and recover from this. I feel like this is a sincere apology, and I am willing to say that Thom should be forgiven.

Now someone says a word and everybody gets all bent out of shape. Give me a break. If you are someone who is homosexual there’s nothing wrong with that. You are free to live your life and have a great life just like someone who is not. No one should hold that against you. You should be treated with respect just like everyone should be treated. There for a while I was listening to WBAL through the app on my phone at work. My job allows you to listen to music or whatever with one earbud in. Well anyway there are times when after they're done talking, it plays something like a 3 or 5 second bumper for the station. During this time their mics are on. There's other times when they might be on a commercial that the mics are on. I remember one time listening, one of the hosts mic was on, he said something relating to something in a different story or whatever, well anyway he says, "oh was my mic on that whole time?" "I hope I didn't say anything bad"
Like if you're in a radio host job, or a sports newscaster, you're held to the most highest extreme standards. Basically, don't do or say anything that could get you in trouble. Kind of the same with my job, the content you view on the work laptop can be monitored at anytime. I usually use it if I need information about a tool or a part we are using, or if I'm having a conversation about something not related to work, say directions from point A to point B, I might look that up, but no harm done.

It really seems like there are people who delight in seeing how many people can have their careers imploded for as small of an infraction as possible.

@jeremygonzalez2230 Maybe he knows close minded people like you would cancel him so viciously, no questions asked and said it because of that. Nothing wrong there.
He knows people like you exist

Yeah he's still trying to play it off as locker room talk. He knew how bad it was and had no qualms saying it in when he thought no one was watching it. It feels performative--as there's a drive into deep left field by Castellanos and that'll be a home run. And so that'll make it a 4-0 ballgame.

What’s terrifying is he asked for forgiveness on the air. Received none. Then shifted to full on PR repair, which probably isnt genuine. It’s a lesson to us all. If you fall out of bounds there will be NO ONE to help you. It’s all about conforming to the rules if you do not it’s all over.

Always treat every microphone like it’s hot. Your phone, a zoom call, everything.
