- I HAVE CUT THE SPLICE JOINT FOR THE FRAME AND I AM GETTING READY TO BRING IN THE DONOR BARE FRAME. I WANTED A WAY TO LEVEL THE FRAM FRONT TO BACK AND LEFT TO RIGHT. I WAS GOING TO BUILD SOME REALLY NICE ADJUSTABLE JACK STANDS OUT OF NEW STEEL.....BUT WHY BUY STEEL WHEN I HAV PLENTY RIGHT HERE IN THE OLD PETERBILT FRAME THAT I CUT OFF THE TRUCK. SO I USED THE HTP MICROCUT 45DV PLASMA CUTTER TO CUT THE FRAME INTO THE NEEDED PIECES AND WELDED IT ALL TOGETHER. THEY ARE NOT FINISHED AS I HAVE A FEW MORE TOUCHES AND ADD ONS TO GO BUT THEY ARE DONE ENOUGH THAT I CAN MOVE FORWARD. HOPE YOU ENJOY!

I’m glad that I’m not the only one who starts out using the cutting glasses and about halfway through the project they are just on top of my head not to be used again 😂
That step cut on the frame is totally next level !!!! pure awesomeness !
it is only as good as the fit on the donor frame. cutting it was easy. fitting it it where the real test comes in.

Those are some very study stands some nice fabrication work as well will be a handy thing to have and when not being used for frame work there be a nice sturdy bench to sit on for a ice cream break👍

Really like how you made that splice cut. I think with your new welder and new found knowledge it will be a super strong join. The liners will be icing on the cake. Oh yea those are some wicked stands you made. I think you will use them more than you know...

we get our education one of two ways. we pay for it in schooling or we pay for it in the mistakes we make when figuring it out. everyday is school around here. always something new to learn.
Scaffold jacks work just like pipe welding stands and their flat top makes them perfect for your use. The style stands you made are commonly called "bucks" and ya can't beat your price on wide channel. I have a bunch made from C-channel from a wood products auction and they're so handy any time I get similar steel I'll fab more. Shorter ones are nice for blocking up vehicles outdoors if you use old steel rims as horizontal bases. Those work even on dirt. With all the frame parts you score it would be worth setting scraps aside for more stand welding parties. If you're doing a task where more positive horizontal retention is wanted an upward-facing piece of channel is easy to attach either by removable bolts or tack welds.
14:51 if you polish all the contact surfaces, and put graphite powder, it's better than grease, because it won't suck in all the shop crud. All you have to do to maintain it is put more graphite powder every few uses. I have a similar setup for a sliding lifter frame (basically two wedges that are used to lift items perfectly parallel, very useful for lining up heavy structures), and where the two flat surfaces meet at the top, i welded a little box around it and put graphite in there and it self feeds. I haven't removed the tin cap in almost 5 years now and it still works.
I'm pretty sure you would not have liked casters on the saw horses.

Thanks for another great video! I built a similar set of stands many years ago with a few changes. I extended the round tube up that the scaffolding jacks fit inside of so there is no need for washers. The giant "wingnuts" are easier to get at and the round tube fits right inside of the wingnut. I also used the pivoting scaffolding jacks rather than the rigid style and I fastened a piece of square tube crosswise to the feet of the jacks. I build a lot of trailers of all widths so the main stringers can be clamped directly to that square tube and have infinite adjustability. They work great.
i dont want the pipe extending above because i want to be able to use these as complete flat surfaces. the purpose of the washers is to reduce the friction and make it easier to adjust with the load on it. i didnt want pivoting. if i need to adjust more than the pins allow, something is definitely wrong.
I totally get it. Our shop has a floor drain system that has quite a pitch to it, so I need a lot of adjustment to get things level.

nope. never had anyone who said i was doing it wrong follow up with their own video of how to do it right. craftsman and people who take pride in their work are always eager to learn more and better ways. a true professional would offer advice and tips on how to do it better rather than tear a person down for not knowing. i dont ask for opinions from people i dont respect.

Those look good. You must have 40 acres of truck frames saved up, LoL I paid about 3 dollars a pound for 5x2x3/16 rectangle tube for the tractor rops I just built. Absolutely ridiculous what it cost!
i do cut a fair amount of truck frames. they always come in handy for some project here or there. if i had bought the new steel along with the adjusters and casters, i would have around $1500. in these. your right. steel is through the roof right now.

good use of material smart Idea and save some cash, metal prices in my Wa. State are through the roof, 2x2 1/8 wall 20 foot stick 210 dollars its crazy, started saving everything Chris as always great video J.C.
the metal i was going to order was going to be over $700. plus the adjusters and casters. looking at over $1500.

Awesome video that is extremely interesting work you are doing I really like the saw horses. You could make a bracket on the bottom so you could move each saw horse with a 2 hand dolly truck I have moved lots of parts around that way it's surprising how well they work especially the ones rated for 400 pounds or more

O-H-I-O Porters.🇺🇸 Peterbuilt Sawhorses…now that’s a thumpin setup. I’m sure casters won’t be needed, but I’m sure they’re heavy enough to carry & support that frame! My thoughts usually go along with using what you have around the shop!🧐 I know you usually have some scraps anyway around there! Hehehe! Hey, I’m getting more excited about this adventure! I wish I were down the road from ya…I would love to be there & help ya on this. I’m sure there’s a great deal to learn. I like the step-down cut on the frame. I’ve never seen it done like that, so I’m excited to see it come together. Do you plan on grinding a valley on those edges so the weld goes into the frame? This is gonna be good!!! 🥰🤩✌️

From the peanut gallery, if you leave the permanent wheels off and put crosspieces between the legs close or on the floor, you can put sandbags on them, like guys do on lathes, to steady things up. In any event, it looks like things are coming right along. Thanks for the video and take care.
i made them low to the ground with a wide stance. that and the fact they are heavy, make them very stable.

Some wheels that you lower like a scissor jack put a 3/4 sccket on an impact .... might be handy
I have a set of frame jacks similar to to those made 20 yrs ago out of the western star plant in canada. “Heavy duty”

you could get the casters that you push down on the foot pedal and they lock down push gain and they fold up thus your stands would stay low and flat when needed but easier to move around when you want their used a lot on wood working stuff like table saws and big plainers ect. just and idea
I'd just put a little 6" piece of frame laid with the C-channel facing up on each of those plates. You can tap bolts in like you said to center the frame to the left or right, and it'll keep the frame pieces from sliding off in either direction.
i have plans of making a bracket for each side that will let me do fine adjustments.

You have used waiste c channel to make a nice jigs to make you life easy for holding frames.
As normal ideas start in your head and it's made a few hours later great job on yhe welding company for the tool's needed for the job at hand

Your homemade sawhorses are probably be more durable than any sawhorse you could buy. I knew a contractor back in the 80s when I was in highschool and every sawhorse he had was homemade. It was because the guy was cheap it's because his homemade were more durable.
The light from a plasma arc can easily destroy your eyes, there are no pain nerve endings inside your eyes, it won't hurt at all while the arc light ruins your eyes. Arc light easily causes macular degeneration, retinal detachment and permanent blindness. This isn't something anyone can debate - it just works that way.
I usually use a automatic welding helmet. My thinking is, if I get a flash of light that's bright enough, it will darken the lens and the rest of the time, it's tinted some anyways
I wonder if Mrs Smith is wearing any eye protection?
And I can tell you from experience I had my retina detach and it took the Dr and 5 of his nurses to hold me down i can't stand anything around my eyes while he put that needle into my eyeball 10 times putting the meds he called it glue told him to dumb it down so I knew what he was talking about the glue was used to hold the wall paper which is like a mirror back up on the wall in my eyeball after that was done and it hurts like hell the numbing didn't take I went home 3 days later went back to there other office where they had the lazar put my chin on pad looked in machine and that first flash was 1000 time brighter then like looking into the sun his words I moved he said you have to stay perfectly still or it wouldn't take and I would loose sight in that eye so I had to hold on it had handles as tight as I could looking into that machine while it kept going around my eye lazer flashing burning it back together but it worked I had to have cataracts taken off 6 months later but I have better sight in my eye then before it came loose so your right ALWAYS protect your eyes I want watch anyone weld or spot weld even on TH-cam videos I don't take any chances after going thru all that it was painful but I can see and that's the main thing I have a little trouble driving at night with all these blue and extra bright led headlights and seems like no one no's what a dimmer switch is these days well sorry for the long rant just don't want anyone to have to go thru this or loose there sight it was nerve racking those evening's having my eye taped shut not knowing if I would be able to see out of that eye again or it would be black like when it was taped shut so just take the time and wear some kind of glasses or shield / hood to protect those 2 little things we forget and 2 are all you have but keep the video's coming Mr and Mrs JC
@@timatwell3728 agreed about the inconsiderate vehicle owners nowadays. All these Yee Yees in their "leveled" (squatted) pickups with their lights pointing to the horizon and why do they all think they're so cool riding around with their fog lights on all the time?
I hate extra regs but would like to have light sensors in patrol cars to detect excessive lumens above a certain height to issue repair tickets for these often Non-DOT approved led lights guys are installing without alignment

@@j.c.smithprojects I’ve had six boxers over 30yrs and every one has a place in my ❤️ best dogs with children and the elderly. My nieces, nephews, and mother in law would come over and the boxers would drop me for them, my brother raised his voice at my nephew and one of the boxers went over and sat in front of my nephew and just stared at my brother I told him he had better shut up. I hope you spoil that boy of yours.
plasma cutter is a lot quieter than the saw, even though the saw leaves a "nicer/cleaner" finish if you have to weld over it ....
plasma is sooo much faster too.

I can see folks who have little backyard sawmills copying those stands for their little mill to set on. I know I would if I was looking to make it right. I could see the "wow" or what ever ya call em back where the crossmember in question.... this frame is not your standard pickup frame that a frame bender can handle so curious as to how your going to get this one done. I been talking to my son about that welder and he ain't got here to the house yet. He works as a supervisor on the Pogo mines here in Alaska. Once their completed building the different stuff that makes it work... lets just say "Wow" for a different meaning! He built something that I call a centrifuge but he calls it something totally different and it pulls thousands of ounces of gold out of the mountain. I ain't gonna even try to say how much gold comes out right now but if you was to imagine a pickup truck loaded to the top of the cab... and make that a very long bed.... that comes out of that mountain every few hours. Maybe it can keep up with the government's spending habits/LOL

Do you like that plasma cutter better than the hypertherm45?
my hypotherm was giving me fits. at times it would struggle just cutting 1/4" material. this one flies through anything i have cut so far.
Do those hole saws do pretty well with lots of oil?
they do "ok". patience is needed. you cant force it. i have cut many holes in steel with that hole saw and it is still sharp.
