I've heard them all, and nobody beats Alan Campbell. You get the cynicism, pragmatism, and his phrasing sounds purely American and of the era the film is set in. If William Holden could sing, I imagine this how he'd sing it too.
Sunset Boulevard {Sunset Blvd ~ Broadway, 1996} - Alan Campbell . I had front row seat THIS WAS THE BEST FREAKIN DAY OF MY LIFE! No one does it better!
I had the honor of seeing Alan Campbell/Betty Buckley on Broadway when I was 17. I was blown away by vocals then. I'm glad I can see this video all these years later to appreciate his acting skill- truly a master class on musical theatre interpretation!
I think this guy is better than John Barrowman or Michael Ball. I like both those artists, but this artist's interpretation is spot on with the feeling in the original script.
I saw Alan Campbell and Glenn Close on Broadway in 1995, then flew the Atlantic to see Elaine Paige and John Barrowman in London the same month. Alan was utterly fantastic as Joe! Such a superb, distinctive voice.
I love his singing, of course, but I also really like the very beginning where he’s reading a book with sunglasses, looks at the audience, puts the book down and takes the sunglasses off. It’s a simple thing to do, but he makes it look cool! What an entrance!
Hello, this video is taken from the Broadway press reels of Sunset Blvd and unfortunately it's not the full show, only 2 songs in full (Sunset Boulevard & Too Much In Love To Care) and and the rest are mostly excerpts from the major numbers...
por mucho...alan campbell ofrece la mejor versiòn de esta canciòn que abre el segundo acto de la obra...una fuerza interpretativa semejante muestra el actor ingles Michael Ball...

Yep, I noticed too! "Smile a rented smile/Fill someone's glass/Kiss someone's wife/Kiss someone's ass/We do whatever pays the wages. I have loved this song for 20+ years and agree, Alan Campbell does the best job by far!
Kate Bornino I agree that Alan Campbell is very good but I am still more partial to Hugh Jackman’s version. His rendition is more cheeky. I love his interpretation of the line “hey, I’m a writer”.
Hi There, do you have the whole show? This is an awesome video. I am directing the show this year and would love a copy this good with all those great close ups.
Awful Alan Campbell. Perfectly nice singer. He is fine if your interpretation of Joe Gillis is a pretty beach boy. All white teeth and tan. But Joe Gillis is sleazy a taker. Heavy drinker smoker down on his luck. William Holden was perfect and the only men I have seen encompass this is Kevin Anderson, the original. Whose laconic approach was perfect. He came across as sleazy and gritty. Alexander Hanson another great performance of low down calculation and Michael Xavier who looked dishevelled and worn out. I love John Barrowman and Michael Ball and have seen them sing the song live as well as JB in the show, but they are not Joe Gillis
No one does Joe Gillis like Alan Campbell, I also love how is voice is pure 1950s.
I've heard them all, and nobody beats Alan Campbell. You get the cynicism, pragmatism, and his phrasing sounds purely American and of the era the film is set in. If William Holden could sing, I imagine this how he'd sing it too.
This is what real singing looks and sounds like.
Sunset Boulevard {Sunset Blvd ~ Broadway, 1996} - Alan Campbell . I had front row seat THIS WAS THE BEST FREAKIN DAY OF MY LIFE! No one does it better!
No one does it better and i had the very last row!
In my opinion, this is the best version of this song. :)
First time I’ve been able to understand all the words to this song! Wonderful !
I saw him, Judy Kuhn and Glen Close in LA after the earthquake! No aftershocks and the show was fantastic!
That's the same time period I saw the show. Absolutely amazing!

His diction is unreal.
That's one benchmark of real effortless singing.
Wow wow I think we have a winner!! Fantastic Rendition: perfect diction, perfect acting and perfect voice!! 💯👏
I think this guy is better than John Barrowman or Michael Ball. I like both those artists, but this artist's interpretation is spot on with the feeling in the original script.
my favorite version of this song by far
I saw Alan Campbell and Glenn Close on Broadway in 1995, then flew the Atlantic to see Elaine Paige and John Barrowman in London the same month. Alan was utterly fantastic as Joe! Such a superb, distinctive voice.
More Alan please. The first show I saw on Broadway was this. Fell in love w him
The first big musical I saw on the West End (London's Broadway) was this. I also fell in love, this version by far the best!
I love his intense stare.
I love his singing, of course, but I also really like the very beginning where he’s reading a book with sunglasses, looks at the audience, puts the book down and takes the sunglasses off. It’s a simple thing to do, but he makes it look cool! What an entrance!
That voice........ughhhhh...I love him. The only Campbell I'll say that about.
GREAT PERFORMANCE!
I saw this show the night before the northridge earthquake.
I believe this is the song for every gold digger out there...
victims of circumstances!
This is just the best:)
He is brilliant.
Thank you for posting this. I love Alan Campbell's version of this song.
Agreed!

I got to see him perform this.
He actually reminds me a lot of Michael Ball circa 1990s
👍you are right !!!
My first Broadway show/musical
"Sunset BoooolevaAaAaAaAaAaArrrrd!"
Great🤩song!
Great👍singer.
saw him in this
sooo good.
Alan Campbell is *the* Joe Gillis.
Almost better than William Holden in the movie! No, better than William because he sings. 😃 Dead right I've sold out
Thought he was great in this. Saw him in LA all those years ago. Love this show.
his performance here thrills me....
and his awesome singing!
He is the best!

Sure I came out here to make my name
Wanted my pool my dose of fame
Wanted my parking space at Warners
But after a year
of one room hell
A Murphy bell
A rancid smell
Wallpaper peeling at the corners
Sunset Boulevard
Twisting boulevard
Secret of the rich
A little scary
Sunset Boulevard
Tempting boulevard
Waiting there to swallow the unwary
Dreams are not enough to win a war
Out here they're always keeping score
Beneath the tan
The battle rages
Smile a rented smile
fill someone's glass
Kiss someone's wife
Kiss someone's ass
We do whatever pays the wages
Sunset Boulevard
Headline boulevard
Getting here is only the beginning
Sunset Boulevard
Jackpot boulevard
Once you've won, you have to go on winning
You think I've sold out
Damn right I've sold out
I've just been waiting
For the right offer
Comfortable quarters
Regular rations
Twenty four hour
Five star room service
And if I'm honest
I like the lady
I can't help being
Touched by her folly
I'm treading water
Taking her money
Watching her sun set
Well I'm a writer
LA's changed a lot over the years
Since those brave goldrush pioneers
Came in their creaky covered wagons
Far as they could go
End of the line
Their dreams were yours
Their dreams were mine
But in those dreams
Were hidden dragons
Sunset Boulevard
Frenzied boulevard
Swamped with every kind of false emotion
Sunset Boulevard
Brutal boulevard
Just like you we'll wind up in the ocean
She was sinking fast
I threw a rope
Now I have suits
And she is hope
It seemed an elegant solution
One day this must end
It isn't real
Still I'll enjoy a hearty meal
Before tomorrow's execution
Sunset Boulevard
Ruthless boulevard
Destination for the stony hearted
Sunset Boulevard
Lethal boulevard
Everyone's forgotten how they started
Here on Sunset Boulevard
Amazing
He *is* Joe. Fantastic.
There is a whole verse missing in this version about kissing someone's wife and more.

Yup. Sad.
To think I only knew him as E.Z. on Threes A Crowd
Great video!
Yeah. Well, that was just as awesome in 1996.
I was just at the broadway
Hi There, do you have the whole show? This is an awesome video. I am directing the show this year and would love a copy this good with all those great close ups.
Why they make it shorter?
Wow. Makes John Barrowman look like Hugh Jackman.
seems like the 2nd verse is missing.
Parodied with dentistry-themed words by Dot Warner
I prefer Alan over their London Joe.
0:33
He has nothing on Kevin Anderson
Alan Campbell is still the best Joe Gillis
No John mind😕
President Bill Clinton is glorious
Jake and the fat man.
Derek was my boyfriend
Jake was my Big brother.
ohhhh school crush!!!
I wonder where are they now??
Lego
Too over dramatic and British sounding...Kevin Anderson’s was better
Not a fan of his voice. Great looking guy though. Just doesn't work for me with his higher range. And his vibrato sounds untamed.
