I think it means that if you are going to compare her to Lupone and Paige. But Close's overall performance and her gargantuan acting overshadowed her lack in technical singing making those ladies with big beautiful voices nothing. It's like Lupone and Paige are just mere actresses who played the role of Norma Desmond, but Norma Desmond is made and meant for Close only.

I photographed Glenn in the '90s and I'm happy to say that she is one of the sweetest, most down to Earth puddle I have ever met. I also worked on a photo shoot with Meryl, and she is equally kind and down to Earth. Just so gracious, the both of them. It's wonderful when people who are so incredibly talented are also kind. To me, Glenn's performance here is just brilliant; she takes so many risks. Fearless. I also think Betty Buckley was fabulous in this role. I don't see a need to compare the two. They're totally different performances. I love them both!

Just watched the film with Swanson and Holden, and found this, Glenn Close has always been a favourite but this was breath-taking, who says she can't sing?! She's bloody brilliant, I so wish I could have seen her live. The film is just awesome, the script is great, and, now I'm 63, I get it. Swanson was so brave to take the role, and her performance it magnificent.
Sunset Blvd. opened in Los Angeles before it went to Broadway. That's were we saw it. It's nearly 30 years later, and this still blows me away. Glenn Close was, and is, Amazing.
if this had been realeased as a movie as les miserables was, Close would have a won an Oscar for her performance. I have seen others sing Sunset Blvd, and while their voices may have been better, non put more soul into the role than Close did.

Glenn Close is a national treasure. She embodies the spirit and soul of her characters like here. What is also exemplary is that she doesn’t have the DIVA mentality like many of her past and present actors which to me makes her all the more extraordinary. Thanks Glenn for yet another brilliant performance.
I hear alot of people talk about how amazing her ACTING is in the role, seemingly dismissing her amazing vocal performance. Yes, Betty and Patti were astonishing....and Glenn is every bit their equal. Plus, she is the one who truly captured the mania that's manifested within and around Norma. Perfection.
Everyone is talking about her amazing acting because the other performers often just sing, without acting. Same can be said about Diana Damrau as Queen of the Night in Magic Flute. She is in the role, she is evil, she is threatening her daughter. She doesn't just stand still trying to hit the high notes like all other singers who sing the famous aria.

I watched her live. This was Glenn Close's Oscar, Golden Globe, Tony and ALL the awards that she should have won because she impacted me so much to show me what a great actress is.
No matter how often I see recordings of Glen Close in the close of the musical, it's a revelation. Norma's total descent into madness is almost terrifying and truly one of the greatest performances in Broadway musical history. Others have done the role, but there is only ONE Glen Close for Sunset Boulevard, just as there was only one Carol Channing for Hello Dolly or one Barbra Streisand for Funny Girl.

She is THE best Norma Desmond without doubt (and I'm one of Elaine Paige's biggest fans). Her raw voice, reflects all the flaws that a clouded mind like Desmond's would have. This is probably the most intense finale I've seen, it gave me the chills
Jorge Caraballo I completely agree with you, Jorge, and I, like you, love Elaine to pieces. But Glenn really brings out the emotions so well, and I think she brings a kind of harshness almost that really suits the character.
Actually, Close has a very fine voice for this particular work. She certainly has more depth and variety of tonal color than others in the role (Lapone, Dunaway). I haven't heard Buckley in the role. My career was in the artistic administration of opera. Close is a HUGE fan of opera. She probably might have wanted to pursue an operatic singing career, but just does not quite have the chops for that (there is no amplification of the voice in opera, and both the orchestras and the halls are much bigger than in musicals as a general rule. But in this role, I cannot imagine anyone finer than Close. One of the great stage performances of our time, and that says a LOT.
Breathtaking...marvelous....stunning...most talented actress in any roll she ever played... Love her...adore her...admire her... Yes she does deserve a few Oscars not just on!! Her acting here is impeccable and heart wrenching. Much love to her and continued success!!

I didn't find her voice to be a problem. It fits the work perfectly, the whole point was that she didn't have the voice for the new kind of movies. She can sing, she just doesn't have a powerhouse voice.
The character Madame Glenn Close is playing, is that of Norma Desmond, an aging actress, who insists on going back to acting notwithstanding her old age. The voice of an aging actress does not require a powerhouse voice!
I saw her live several months ago... in all honesty not all vocals have to sound like sonic booms! Her performance and singing were superb! Bravo Glenn, bravo!!!
The only point of music in a musical is to communicate emotion, and Close does it magnificently. She was great in 1994 and greater in the 2017 revival.
This is clearly the Best Broadway Musical I ever saw while I didn't see the original production due to the fact I was born 8 months before it opened in November of 1994 23 year later I finally see it on Broadway in this Acclaimed Revival and it was the best musical I ever experienced on Broadway! HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL BROADWAY FANS WHO WERE BORN IN 1994 should go see this magnificent revival before it departs June 25th 😀

I remember watching the original movie on the late show with my mom. I couldn't believe how glamours it was. To see this portrayal is amazing. Glenn has always given her best 😍👍
I think Glenn Close's voice was perfect for this role anyone else would have over sung the part and made it to melodious...we need the raw, realness with the dramatization that only Glenn could provide!
When Betty Buckley took up residence on Sunset Blvd, she quickly kicked all memories of Glenn Close to the curb. Ms.Close is a phenomenal stage and screen talent, look for her great talent in films

Glenn Close deservedly won the Tony for this, as she also did for "Death and the Maiden". She's won every acting award except the Oscar, for which she Motion Picture Academy should hang their heads in shame. They come no greater than Close and Meryl Streep.

The only point of music in a musical is to communicate emotion, and Close does it magnificently. She was great in 1994 and greater in the 2017 revival.

This is clearly the Best Broadway Musical I ever saw while I didn't see the original production due to the fact I was born 8 months before it opened in November of 1994 23 year later I finally see it on Broadway in this Acclaimed Revival and it was the best musical I ever experienced on Broadway! HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL BROADWAY FANS WHO WERE BORN IN 1994 should go see this magnificent revival before it departs June 25th 😀

This is a superb clip and nice stereo sound! I agree Glenn is the best Norma and I think her voice is perfectly-suited for the character. I wish they'd go ahead and make the film and cast her.
I remember watching the original movie on the late show with my mom. I couldn't believe how glamours it was. To see this portrayal is amazing. Glenn has always given her best 😍👍
I think Glenn Close's voice was perfect for this role anyone else would have over sung the part and made it to melodious...we need the raw, realness with the dramatization that only Glenn could provide!
When Betty Buckley took up residence on Sunset Blvd, she quickly kicked all memories of Glenn Close to the curb. Ms.Close is a phenomenal stage and screen talent, look for her great talent in films
DAMN, I WISH I SAW HER IN THIS ROLE LIVE. WHEN I SAW THIS SHOW IT WAS DIHANN CAROLL - AND SHE WAS GREAT TOO. BUT GLENN CLOSE IS UNTOUCHABLE.
I love how it blacks out so abruptly. Reflective of the fade-out in the film.

I couldn't agree with you more. As Norma Desmond she RIVITED you to your seat and frightened you with Normas' Neurosis. One of the greatest Broadway performances of all time!!!
Glenn Close deservedly won the Tony for this, as she also did for "Death and the Maiden". She's won every acting award except the Oscar, for which she Motion Picture Academy should hang their heads in shame. They come no greater than Close and Meryl Streep.
