Succulents don’t have to be scary. This is how I know when to water mine

  • If you can keep one succulent alive, then my job is done here. Cacti and succulents were my first official plants and I too thought, they don’t need a lot of water. That is far from the truth. They need plenty of water when you do water, just look for the signs first before you do.
    Soil should be dry, SLIGHT wrinkle in the leaves, and a good through soak.
    If you find your succulent getting stretched, that means it’s not getting enough sun. You can place on a windowsill that gets brighter light or supplement with grow lights too.

      they're fine with being cold until temperatures drop to freezing, my house is usually 65° F. lack of sunlight, wrong soil type, overwatering are the 3 main issues people tend to have with succulents, sunlight being the biggest one i'd say because most people's houses just don't get enough light for them indoors

    If your succulent has a dusty blue, purple, or sometimes pink film on the petals, that is farina! Its a protective wax-like substance that gives us those pretty pastels, can help prevent sunburn and even rot, and is desdtroyed by the oils from your hands. If you notice yourself leaving fingerprints, try not to touch that succulent for the prettiest and healthiest results!

      I know this is late, but… I’ve been researching succulents for months now and well, I think I have the answer. I have an aloe who I wash the leaves up with just water and a napkin. It gets fungal infections on the leaves because of that. Echeveria? Yeah, for sure bottom water that guy so you don’t take off its sunscreen (lol). Overall, I would try to do mostly bottom watering when you can. If you can’t, try to top water, (drown that h-), and try to avoid contact of water on the leaves. (Make sure to let the soil completely dry out before watering again: have soil that easily drains water and doesn’t retain moisture (cacti mix and perlite recommended): give enough sun and watch out for it being leggy, etc, etc).

    i would love to see you branch out into some planted aquariums, growing plants underwater is a whole new challenge. it can be done with $500 of high tech equipment, or it can be done with $100 of equipment from home depot. or a paludarium style enclosure with aquatic and terrestrial plants, although with that you get into much more expensive and difficult territory when it comes to making a background, although you can just use cork board as a cheap and super easy background. serpadesign has tons of great tutorials on paludariums, md fishtanks is a great channel for the purely aquarium plant side of things, and he normally does low tech budget style tanks so it’s not as intimidating to replicate

      I have an aloe. I can give you some advice. (I had it for months now- along with many other species of aloe in my room). Try to give the aloes indirect sunlight. Make sure not to place it too close to the window or grow light you’re using (it’ll get scorched and burnt on the leaves). You can wipe the leaves with a dry napkin, but never a wet one (risk of fungal infection). Try to get a soil that’s very good at draining out water (cactus soil and other material such as perlite works well). Bottom watering is a preferred method of watering for most aloes. But, if you have to top water make sure to “drown that h-“ and to not get the leaves wet. Try to let it grow without interfering every second, such as always having the need to water it. When you think of propagating, try to get stem tissue in the cutting. Lastly, give it love and encouragement. ❤

    Bottom feed your house plants....any and every house plant.. they dont require or receive enough sun to be watered regularly, succulents specifically the leafs/stems should be firm to the touch, if you notice any wrinkles is also a sign, fill a small container with water and leave your plant inside it with it remaining inside the pot, it will soak up the amount of water it needs on its own, leave it for about 30 minutes, make sure to let excess water drip from the bottom so it doesnt drown, overwatering is probably more harmful than under watering, if you dont water enough you can always water more, if you water too much your screwed until the soil drys and even then you'll probably experience root rot or top mold

  • @EddyG0rdo

    • @Artistguess
      @Artistguess 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Itiswhatitis638when the leaves are less plump, wrinkly, droopy, etc, that’s a sign to water. When you water try to bottom water (a more effective method) or top water, AKA “drown that h-.” Let the soil completely dry out in between watering (can test the soil by sticking your finger in it or using a moisture meter). Try not to touch certain leaves of succulents such as echeverias because of their natural sunblock that protects them from the sun. The more sun you give them the better they will thrive. Do NOT be afraid of giving it too much water when the time comes. But do make sure you water rarely. (I water in the summer every 2-3 weeks and every 4-6 weeks in the winter: inside plants). Try not to scorch the plants by putting a grow light too close or by putting them too close to a window. Find a soil that drains well, such as a cacti soil with certain elements like perlite to promote drainage. Enjoy!

    I always say, just because succulents can survive without water doesn't mean they'll thrive. I actually grow mine outdoors and let me tell you, they thrive. Those babies need SUN to really do well. I just split my biggest aloe and got 25 pups from it. I have trays and trays of leaf props, tons of cell containers with babies and many more pots and containers as well as a large outdoor bed full of just my succulent collection. Now I live in a semi tropical climate, but the point is, if you can put them out to get some sun on a porch, patio or balcony, DO IT! They will need water more often if you give them more sun, my beds get watered daily in the summer.

    Can I put water on the plants leaves as my meaty plant shop salesperson said that I cannot water the leaves but I saw you do so. I know you are a plant expert so am just here to ask if you have watered the leaves or I see wrongly thank you!

    • @Artistguess
      @Artistguess 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ive noticed that mistake too. Please try to avoid getting water on the leaves as much as possible. Some succulents have a protective layer, almost like sunblock, to protect from the sun. (Example: an echeveria). You can severely damage it and let it be more prone to infections and scorching. Also, water sitting on leaves can cause fungal infection (as I’m experiencing right now with my aloe, lol). Wish you the best of luck. ❤.

    I dunno, I do this exact thing and my bear paw succulent still only had 4 little paws

    • @Artistguess
      @Artistguess 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have many bear paw succulents that are thriving. Here are some thoughts, reminders, and techniques that may help you. 1) A well draining cacti/ succulent soil (elements such as perlite can help with drainage). 2) Sunlight. If you can get natural sun (indirect or direct), it’s best to place the plant there. If not, try to give the plant light from a grow light for the amount of hours recommended (usually 6-8). Make sure to put the grow light a few inches above the plant to prevent scorching. Same goes for plants by the window (a few inches away from the window). 3) Watering. Make sure to give the plant water every 2-3 weeks in the summer and every 4-5 weeks in the winter (if indoors). Give it a lot of water when you water, which is rarely: “drown that h-.” Try to avoid getting the bear paw leaves wet. This can cause infections. Have an amazing plant journey. ❤

    What do I do with a bunch of different succulents planted in one big pot?

    • @Artistguess
      @Artistguess 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      1) Make sure the succulent arrangement has plants that have similar needs. 2) If not, separate, transplant, or repot them into better groups or into their own pots and fulfill their needs.

      Careful. Many plants are toxic to dogs and animals. Try to elevate them or hide them away. Don’t want a trip to the emergency room 😊.

    What do I do if my succulent’s leaves are mushy but I just watered it?

    • @joelleweetjewel9948
      @joelleweetjewel9948 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If they're mushy and wet, you're probably watering it too often. Cut down on watering and change the soil in case it might have root rot.
      If they're thin and wrinkly even a day after you've watered it, you're probably watering it too little. Make sure you give the plant enough water (drench until water comes out all drainage holes) and optionally let the plant pot soak in water for ~1hr if the soil has become hydrophobic.

    Ok but what if the succulent you have repotted is absolutely refusing to stay put and make rootsto hold onto the new soil, bc ome of my succulents keeps wiggling every time I pick it up to drown it and it is driving me crazy
    And the rest of my succulents just absolutely refuse to absorb water and love drooping these plants will be my doom
