After a long period of obsessing over xpan, i tried a 19mm lens on 35mm film approach, and settled on it happily. I watched your reviews, among others, and thank you for your no bs approach.
My friend who shoot mostly exclusively in 6x17 showed me his Mamiya official dropped in kit for his Mamiya 7 that convert the camera into ultra wide shooting 135; and yes, it was made by Mamiya officially, not those cheap 3D printed spool. So, if you ever want to return to the format, just pick up one of those for the cost of half of your TX-1. Also, much kudos for the effort for filming with anamorphic glass to match the subject matter.
Your channel has really motivated me to keep doing film photography, I quit years back because I just felt like I wasn't going anywhere but you talking about how pictures still come out ass really helped me try again. My pictures are still ass but not as bad as they were before, so thanks 😂
After many years of wishing I had this camera/lens combination (after renting it once in the late 2000s) a few months ago I finally bought it from eBay with huge help from a random 30% off coupon (I have no idea why it only applied to this one item. This is about as close as I’ve ever been to a $5 thrift store find.) So far it’s been great. Unlike Jason, I tend to see panos all the time. I am new to rangefinder focusing, so that’s a bit of a challenge, but one I’m up for. So if you too see panos all the time, get one. Then get it insured.
I'd love to know what Jason thinks isn't lack luster because 18:14 that look is amazing! It's dare I say, "Cinematic." There's nothing I love more than whenever Jason pulls out the TX-1, those are always my favorite videos, the pictures are always amazing, and that could just be the wide screen talking mixed in with a little bit of envy because I've always wanted to shoot in this format. But either way, I reject your rejection of the xpan Mr. Grainydays. You need to keep it and you need to shoot more of it please, for the love all sproket holes.
I'm going to do a massive hot take. Xpan are for the people who can afford regular trips to exotic places, not trips to abandoned buildings. Oof I feel the roast writing it
What's also pretty cool is loading 35mm film into a 120 camera, I did this for my RZ67 and also in my 4x5 camera with a toyo 6x9 adapter by re-using the paper and spool of old 120 film and placing the 35mm there. But you can also find 3D-printed adapters to load a 35mm roll like a 120 film, however you need a dark room to get the film out again and roll it back, or have to become creative with using an empty roll as the receiver for the film.
Jason you for real make some of the most top tier content on this platform. Super inspiring actually, I get tons of motivation and optimism after watching your videos and that effect has played a maaajor role in my deciding to start shooting 35mm film. Anyway, I’m stoned and over sharing again woops, just wanted to say: great job and we appreciate the hard work you put into bringing us the super well produced, informative, creative, and fuuuny as fuck entertainment that is your videos. You’s a G🤟🏼
Not a film shooter here. But, ever since I got the Fuji GFX 100 II it’s pretty much been locked-on on the 65:24 aspect ratio - imitating the x-pan aspect ratio. I freaking LOVE it for my landscape work. It’s one of the reasons I picked up this camera! But I’m also happy to be able to occasionally flip it back to 4:3 for the clients who don’t understand / appreciate the beauty of the panoramic aspect ratio.
Jason, since not nearly enough people comment in the first day of uploading. I was excited to know that you will have to see this message. I have this cool Pentax zoom 90 WR that would be interesting for you if you were to ever make a video testing out subscribers nifty money pits!
Sad to see you leaving the xpan behind, but something I saw coming. It's a very unique camera with its format but there are some people out doing some great bangers with that pano format. Josef Koudelka might be a good example... for pano, not the xpan. The first time I used one in Copenhagen, it felt right to me and when I saw my results I felt in love with that camera and had to get one. Now it´s one of my all time favorites. Maybe a 6x17 would be something for the future to come
I would love an X-Pan but the price just cannot be justified. I’ve taken fake panos, using a Fuji point and shoot, funnily enough, but the quality is so limited. I’m glad to hear your honesty about the format and why it doesn’t work for you, though you’ve produced some sublime work for it!
It may be not your "look" but that negative space realy makes the subject pop in your shots, there is just something about that aspect ratio and your style, that looks so dreamy and calm, so i woudl judt give it a time maby
It is criminal that this body styling hasn't been exactly replicated for a modern digital camera. It would be an absolute hit. The colour, the wooden grip.
Fair criticism for what might be my favourite camera. I come from a filmmaking background so the aspect ratio feels natural for me to think in but also I don't think in terms of portfolio or consistency of work. I just think about what I like to shoot and these days it seems to be vertical 6x7 or panorama. The presentation aspect is also very important, the first time I truly appreciated the format was when I threw the photos up on a 65" 4k TV. My photos are for me but if I was more concerned about sharing them, this ain't the format for today's consumption habits. Also, you could just shoot medium format and crop in.
As a 62 year old who grew up in Macy's photo studio because my dad ran it...I urge you not to sell that camera. You may not see NOW the way that camera sees, but days are long and the years are short. In my experience, you'll want the option to come back to it.
What was the anamorphic lens used to film this video? Something vintage? The busy bokeh and blurred vignette reminds me of the "3 Body Problem" series...
I agree that the color film you tend to use does not lend itself to panoramics. However, I loved those shots you took in Chicago with this camera. I think the grittiness that Tri-X gave (iirc) really made the street shots work well. Although I definitely get the limitation of the lens speeds. I do pano shots whenever I can, but always stitched. To have an additional camera for it would def get old.
Use any 6x6 slr and throw in 135 film and a mask on the viewfinder glass and you are good to go. I did it with my Pentax 67ii and it came out pretty good.
I would hold on to it and keep it in great working order. Then, when you get old, you can use the proceeds to buy a 20 foot boat and sale off into the sunset. It will probably be worth that by then.
I have a GFX and I love what it'll do with the X-Pan crop but shooting vertical for phone backgrounds is the only way to really display anything without a huge printer.
My dude is brave to do warm color filters for b&w. And continuous shots in widescreen look amazing if riding a train. Fits the windows and shape of the train carts. Thanks for taking the sacrifice for us, someday they'll bring back the pano cams.
The 30mm actually corresponds sort of to the maximum field of view outside the markings of the integrated viewfinder. Good enough most of the time to use without having to carry the external one.
Thanks for sharing your scanning process. I think I would do three or four scan shots versus two. I also think my foray into 35mm Pano would be on a Sprocket Rocket. I am a poor. Perhaps a GSW690iii, then crop in the scan?
Why not just shove 35mm into a medium format camera? I know there are kits for the mamiya 7, or you could just use 3D printed spool inserts and get sprocket panos (if you ever would want that). I use my bronica etrsi with a pano back and it's linear nearly the dimensions of xpan. I also use my widelux f8 because I like the distortions, and a 37mm fisheye on my pentax 67 with 35mm panos look quite cinematic
You can buy a Plustek 135i or a flatbed which can natively scan xpan shots with no stitching required. If you can afford an xpan it’s well worth the $500 to buy one to simplify the scanning imo.
Informative and beautiful video as always, you really set the bar in terms of beautiful TH-cam videos. Also, what lens did you use for the outdoor shots?
Have you thought about getting a real scanner, like a Epson V850? Also, the camera can be fixed, but it isn't cheap (or easy) but it is cheaper then getting another used Xpan/Tx1. The place you gotta send it is Hasselblad NL (neatherlands). You'll spend about $70 on shipping, it will sit in customs for a week or so, then after Wilco pays import duties he'll fix it for .... I don't know, but it's still cheaper than getting another used Xpan/Tx1.
A good digital camera will produce better scans than a V850. You have to get into Imacon scanning to get better results than modern cameras with a macro lens.
As someone who is really new to film (just over a year in) I really enjoy the panoramic formats. Unfortunately every camera system that shoots panoramics are incredibly expensive. Although I will be getting a Fujifilm 6x17 at some point in the future.
18:30 I just did a video essay on Koudelka that made me completely rethink panorama photography. He’s a great case study how good black and white panoramas can look.
I love the Xpan but from all my film cameras collection is the only one that gave up on me. The switch at back that selects the panoramic mode or normal 35 doesn’t register anymore the P position. As such, the camera doesn’t let me fire the shutter anymore. Is been a very costly mistake. I’ve send it for repair but not sure if they can fix it
Jason what is your opinion about Vpan magazine mod? I've seen many people complaining about xpan price and unreliability, not mentioning the difference bewteen clens and xlens
Okay, that hurt. I started taking photos with that aspect ratio in mind to be later cropped to after seeing Jason's previous videos with the XPan. So long, partner.

once again, appreciate that the video ratio represents the type of camera that is being used in the video
well in this case he is shooting anamorphic
I've just noticed that, well spotted!
Now to go back and see if he does it with others...
Honestly, I didn't even knew that it was possible, that's such a cool idea!

Babe wake up, funny film man made a new wide boy video
babe go back to bed and never wake up hes selling the xpan...
Rejecting pano is simply the first step on your healing journey towards finally embracing square format
watching this on an ultrawide monitor it makes me really appreciate these pics

Wow these frames are wider than my expectations when seeing a new grainydays video is online

man I would've thought you got it for "$5 at a thrift store" like all your other cameras
22:37 oooouff the clean sand next to rough beach split by the fence. All those details and structures to look at. Such a nice last shot

Finally, a video format that almost matches my long phone screen
don't know if it is a compliment but your cinematography and the quality of the videos are way better than the actual photos.

Honestly a windowless bathroom and a towel over the door seam and your back turned will also do, unless you have very sensitive film.

I love my XPAN, now I want a 617. Scanning with a Nikon 8000 is pretty straight forward with a modified holder.
Really enjoyed the time with my xpan, especially zero-point panos. Sold it for way too cheap, have missed it since
Also, I think I saw a Mamiya 7(ii?) in this video. Iirc, there is a very good pano adapter for these using 135.
Whatever lens you used to record this video reminded me to get an appointment to see my optometrist! ✌🏽
Crystal clear shots all done without using a tripod - amazing.

Anamorphic lenses for the video looking great 🔥
I dunno, I'd probably have to walk around with a Milwaukee 48" level in my back pocket just to keep the horizon straight with this camera.
Bolt the level to the tripod mount and call it good. Leaves your pockets clear for more film.
Informative and beautiful video as always, you really set the bar in terms of beautiful TH-cam videos. Also, what lens did you use for the outdoor shots?
Anamorphic lenses for a youtube video with out even flexing, thix dude is crazy.

Cool camera and results. I wouldn't be interested in owning one, but I like what you do with it. What's up with your autofocus?
Before selling you should try the 90mm. Interesting perspective for environmental shots.
Shot with a vintage lens, nice! I don't expect to ever find out what it is but yeah, I'm digging it.

I would love to see the setup jason uses for videos, specially since many scenes here were shot solo I wanna see how he does that
lomography makes a film scanner that is designed around their sprocket rocket camera. I believe that would be easier for scanning panos.
You know what would be sweet? If Lomo made a version of their LCA120 to shoot 65:24 on 35mm film. The light meter and 38mm lens on the LCA120 are decent (at least by Lomo standards) and cover 6x6 so there will be enough of an image circle. It’d be reasonably compact. All they’d have to do is the film transport. Who knows how likely it is that they might actually make such a camera, but seems more probable than my owning an XPan.
Wonder if a flat bed scanner would make the scanning process less ass
Hey Jason what strap do you use on your XPAN? I can't seem to find any nice ones that fit through the tighter right side lug!
