Deus Ex is a cyberpunk-themed action-role playing video game - combining first-person shooter, stealth and role-playing elements - developed by Ion Storm and published by Eidos Interactive in 2000. Set in a dystopian world during the year 2052, the central plot follows rookie United Nations Anti-Terrorist Coalition agent JC Denton, as he sets out to combat terrorist forces, which have become increasingly prevalent in a world slipping ever further into chaos. As the plot unfolds, Denton becomes entangled in a deep and ancient conspiracy, encountering organizations such as Majestic 12, the Illuminati, and the Hong Kong Triads throughout his journey.
Deus Ex incorporates elements from four video game genres: role-playing, first-person shooter, adventure, and "immersive simulation", the last of which being a game where "nothing reminds you that you're just playing a game". For example, the game uses a first-person camera during gameplay and includes exploration and character interaction as primary features.
The plot of Deus Ex depicts a society on a slow spiral into chaos. There is a massive division between the rich and the poor, not only socially, but in some cities physically. A lethal pandemic known as the "Gray Death" ravages the world's population, especially within the United States, and has no cure. A synthetic vaccine, "Ambrosia", manufactured by the company VersaLife, nullifies the effects of the virus, but is in critically short supply. Because of its scarcity, Ambrosia is available only to those deemed "vital to the social order", and finds its way primarily to government officials, military personnel, the rich and influential, scientists, and the intellectual elite. With no hope for the common people of the world, riots occur worldwide, and a number of terrorist organizations have formed with the professed intent of assisting the downtrodden, among them the National Secessionist Forces of the U.S. and a French group known as Silhouette.
In order to combat these threats to the world order, the United Nations has greatly expanded its governmental influence around the globe. The United Nations Anti-Terrorist Coalition (UNATCO) is formed, with the intent of maintaining peace internationally and combating the world's ever-growing number of terrorist groups. It is headquartered near New York City in a bunker beneath Liberty Island, placed there after a terrorist strike on the Statue of Liberty.

The walkthrough of this game done on "Medium" level of difficulty resulting in one video file with duration of more than 25 hours, but due to youtube limitations (videos of more than 12 hours long rejected) it's splitted in three parts little more than eight hours long each. I remember buying it, trying it, deciding its way too demanding for me, then injuring my leg at basketball and spending the entire summer finishing the game. Oh, the days!
You can play basketball in Deus Ex instead.

Amadeus Eisenberg Not what happened with me and I played it 19 years after release. I was completely hooked right until the end. The variety in all the levels, the non linearity, how missions get harder and harder as you develop JC Denton’s augmentations and the way the story develops are the reasons why.

OMG this game was so good! The very first of its kind - action/adventure RPG where YOU got to decide how to approach a situation. This is a classic. And the 2011 reboot and 2016 sequal are amazing as well.
Not the very first of its kind. Deus Ex was inspired by System Shock 1 & 2. But still a good one.
I remember solving a mission by stacking crates and climbing through a window, totally bypassing the cameras. Truly amazing, immersive gameplay.
I just played through most of the freighter, what a DELIGHT! So many secrets to discover and datacubes to read. ☕

But far better than what we have today.
We went from Atari, NES, SNES/mega, playstation and then PC games like Deus Ex, half-life, Diablo 2, Baldur's Gate 2, Far Cry, Crysis and then nothing of merit.
While games seem to have made great technical leaps in graphics, memory and processing game play has gone backwards in many ways.
It is like the guys who made games on the SNES had more immigration than those using super computer games development today.

GTA 4 is from the late 2000's it was 2008 and it has some great ragdoll, physics, soundtrack, content and the storyline is depressing.

Totally agree. Dishonored games and other Deus Ex games are the only similar games that have been made since unfortunately.

I'm gonna assume you are comparing this game to something like sw battlefront (which is infamous for it's lack of content).
You are literally comparing 2 different games with 2 completely different genres. Max payne for example (which came out the same year as deus ex), has a 6 hour campaign with no replay value and no multiplayer.
Yet games with the same or similar genre to deus ex, ussualy have as much or even more content than this.
Take off your thick ass nostalgia goggles, and realize that games today sell for less than they used to 20 years ago and offer 5x more content than older games. And do some research before commenting something stupid like this. (or don't, cause out of touch idiots like you that haven't played a video game since the 6th generation will upvote your dumb comments anyway)

That's my favorite FPS action game of all of the time, Ion Storm doing a terrific work.
Back when the developers actually cared about their product and it showed.
I found this game covered in dust in my dads file cabinet full of other PC games when I was maybe 13? I couldn't get past the dock because the lighting in the world was so dim and I would die within the first few minutes, until I finally brightened the screen. I didn't realize it would lead to an obsession with Deus Ex.

I remember playing this when I was a kid - I still remember the chills I used to get at the intro music, and have played it so many times that I could re-enact the dialogues in my sleep. My dad thought I have gone loco. :/
The game creator was a visionary!
This was the first game I played in 2000/2001 - I played at the easy level and really enjoyed it - took me about 3 hours. I still have the game disc and box - happy memories.
I'm replaying this classic on my old Pentium 4 computer from 2002.
It's really a nice experience to play old games using old hardware.

I'm not really sure how different it is from the PC, never played on PC, there's loading screens and frame rate issues in certain areas that will get on your nerves though. Not sure how going up latters is on PC, but it's awful going up them in ps2. But it's good.
This game was the best I've played, and the scope isn't bad either. Music, game mechanics, story and graphics here everything was perfect!

This game is too demanding for current gen computers. Even the latest in the Voodoo lineup struggles to maintain 30FPS at 1024x768. I say, hold off for a year or two and wait for hardware to catch up.

Actually it is not. This video footage was recorded on toaster. I recorded this game also on weak PC (Pentium D 925 3 GHz, 3 GB RAM DDR2 and Geforce 240 GT 512 MB VRAM GDDR5) and it worked perfectly fine, I could record it in high definition (but I used 4:3 aspect ratio, resolution was 1152x864 which is interpolated to 720p on TH-cam player) in stable 30 FPS.

Alan Gabriel Medina Movies aren't really that big anymore, the best way to adapt books or video games like this on to the screen is through a TV series. Imagine if HBO took this game and turned it into a TV show, that would be amazing. That's how Game of Thrones was made, it's was originally a book series titled "A Song of Ice and Fire".

I remember using a cheat code to generate loads of alcohol. I drank so much JC actually dropped dead. Did the same with cigarettes. I made JC actually smoke himself to death. A fun little Easter egg.

At the docks in the first mission just across from the informant in the water there is a sunken boat with a locked hatch, can use the explosive barrels to blow it open, some good stuff in there

The sounds of stepping on rats, "aaaarggghh" from the enemies dying, the surveillance cameras and OF COURSE who could forget that thunderous, sharp, tip toeing walk lol. Spent 1000s of hours on this, by far my favourite map was in the Garage, it was just so bad ass. Easily the greatest game of all time.

Sadly not the later episodes... 2 in my opinion is crap. 3 kinda okay but don't get even close to the first, but I like that at the endgame those "mad" augs freaks me out. They scare me even though I have never seen a horror movie what scared me... 4 also crap in my opinion.

i have all 4 games, played trough several times all of them so i have my opinion about them. whats actually quite common. none of the later episodes reached the hight of the first one in my opinion.

finished completing DX: human revolution yesterday. I have now started DX original after finding some things to make it run. this game has held up surprisingly well
