I hate it when people say "you're black you have melanin you don't need sunscreen"
As a black woman who has had a sunburn and suffered...wear fookhin sunscreen. Stop being crazies.

This. Had a patient during clinicals, black, lived in a sunny area, didn't use sunscreen. Developed malignant melanoma, blew it off - by the time she was my patient, half of her brain was affected, metastases everywhere. Fed her thru a tube into her stomach. She lasted just less than a week, died about 5 a.m., 2 hours before we got report.
Humor us - use the damn sunscreen.

    • @petuniasevan

You can even develop skin cancer, especially in spots where you don't have as much melanin. Palms of hands, soles of feet, any normally clothed body part that is suddenly put out in the sun to bake. I had a co-worker at a previous employer who had NEVER had a sunburn until the bucket-list vacation he took to the Serengeti. He came back and he definitely was sunburnt. I had wanted to tell him to take sunscreen but didn't want to appear nosy or worse. (I'm white). Well, next time I will say something; poor guy peeled like a lizard after a couple of days and was in pain.

I’m a biologist, I remember in one of my lab classes a student had moved the disposal beaker and replaced it with another one. My partner and I did now know this and we dumped our waste in the beaker that was half way full. We did not think about it because the liquids looked the same. But once it was dumped it started to bubble, I have never seen so much fear in someone’s eyes, my lab partner and I almost had instant heart attacks. Before we could turn to warn the professor alarms started going off, the big waste disposal beaker was now foaming as well as bubbling. Nothing exploded, thankfully. Though we all got a good scold from the professor, no one every stepped up to say they were the ones to switch the beakers.

Most terrifying "co-worker screwup story" I've read online: a guy at a grocery store was closing up for the night. His co-worker couldn't find any plain old Lysol to mop the floors. However, he thought he was an expert on chemicals and proceeded to cobble together whatever he came across in the closet. A strange colored cloud emanated from the storage room and they heard him collapse. Two co-workers dragged him out and his skin was discolored. When the paramedics arrived, their reaction was "How in the world did he get hit by MUSTARD GAS?" You know, one of the first deadly chemical weapons used in war time... The co-workers and supervisor were shocked but later, a toxicology report was whipped up. By mixing up everything in the closet (I cannot believe how stupid he was, I'd RUN for the doors if a co-worker started mixing up everything found in a cleaning closet) he had somehow produced a crude form of mustard gas! He was in the hospital for a while. I have no idea what happened to him. The guy who posted the story never did a follow-up but I'm sure the injured worker got fired.

You're right. Having weak/bad teeth runs in my family. I can assure you that I get at least four or five cavities per year and even my fillings need replaced every four to five years. There are many times where I have left it go when I shouldn't have and know others who have done the same. Half of the time I don't even know the cavities are there until it's too late and they need filled or a root canal.

    • @TripleBarrel06
      @TripleBarrel06 4 ปีที่แล้ว +38

Doesn't help that dental work is usually crazy expensive for even the smallest maintenance. Even in countries with universal or subsidised healthcare it tends to be exempt from the subsidy. In my country you tend to need at least a few hundred spare for a filling and a few thousand for a crown, and that multiplies if you need multiple teeth done. Most people know it's unhealthy and painful to have damaged teeth but can't afford to do anything about it.

Nature in general is terrifying and awesome in the traditional sense. Most people don't understand how efficient and ruthless life has been for the far and away vast majority life had existed. There's a reason we feel like sh** from being lonely- being with companions kept us alive when there were tons of saber cats, mammoths, giant sloths and others ready to scour or eat us. Too sick? Too bad, unless somebody really felt wasting energy to keep you alive is worth it, you're dead. You're lazy, you don't find food and starve. If you don't hunt down your meal or find the right berries that aren't poisonous, you're dead. Don't hear the rustling in the bushes? Bam it's a big bear or tiger, you're dead. This world isn't designed to sustain billions of people living like kings, there's a reason some people actually long for those ruthless times where death by nature was always around the corner

A lot of my older buds have severe head damage, broken noses, bad memory, bad sight etc. The fragility of the human body when knocked out is the reason you can only get knocked out a few times in professional boxing before you need to quit, since it would be too dangerous. Stuff like knees, shins, elbows, shoulders and jaws also have a bad time in muay thai boxing, got a lot of people with severe knee and shoulder problems in my club, really scares you away from doing this sport professionally. Many people will clean with bleach straight out of the jug when its not intended to be used at full concentration. For example, to disinfect most surfaces 1/2 cup or 1/3 cup of bleach per gallon of water is recommended. Its also extremely harmful if you get it in your eyes, you need to go to the ER if this happens as it can result in permanent eye damage.

Yep, neighbor just had a shiny new 4’ chain link fence installed complete with top rail. Looked great for about 6 hours! Calm day, no real wind to speak of! Massive limb well over 12” in thickness and a good 20’ long suddenly failed! Sounded exactly like a string of firecrackers. I was out riding my horse in the general area but within 1000’ of the limb failure. I watched it fall in disbelief. Crushed a good section of the guys brand new fence. Made me think twice about riding around those trees!

I took like a third of a (small to medium sized) bottle probably over a few hours... I was in so much pain I was forgetting how much I was taking unfortunately 😓
Also with Tylenol it takes up to 24hrs to kill you, and you just fall asleep and never wake up. So matter of fact had I not also taken like ~more than half a bottle of ibuprofen (advil) before passing out from the pain (it was the worst migraine of my LIFE), and then waking up VIOLENTLY sick to my stomach, like I was even throwing up blood a bit and throwing up so hard that I burst blood vessels in my face (I had bruising around my mouth), that prompted the hospital visit in the first place.... I probably would have thought that I was fine and not seeked medical attention and would have just died.
Part of why it was so close was bc they didn't administer the treatment until like ~16hrs after I took it (I was throwing up too much to fully explain, so they had to get my vomiting under control before they could get a full history). Like it was already killing me at that point. They couldn't do a charcoal smoothie, they had to do IV medicine to counteract the effects of the Tylenol. (Once they got my vomiting under control with IV anti-nauseants, they got my history and we're like SHIT, did another blood test, saw the alarming levels, and I was immediately brought to ICU)
(Tho I found out from a doctor in the ER that ibuprofen is nearly impossible to OD on, it'll mess up your stomach REAL bad, but you won't die. And chronic over use can cause stomach ulcers, but yea. Don't recommend you abuse them either, but they're a much safer pain killer.)
Luckily for me this incident got my doctor to FINALLY listen to me about my migraines, so I am no longer at risk for this sort of thing, but yea. (I'm on topamax daily now and take Alka Seltzer any time I get a headache or whatever bc it turns out I have what are called "gut migraines" which means that if I'm nauseous the pain will never resolve. And Alka Seltzer has aspirin also so. And I NEVER take more than the recommended dose!)

Like I'd taken what is actually a dangerous dose of Tylenol tons of times before and been fine (well my liver was starting to show the effects of it but yea). So like... The fact that it took like a third of a bottle for me to OD shouldn't be a guage for you all, because you probably don't have a body that doesn't metabolize drugs right.

Though I've adjusted them myself I wouldn't advise anybody to do it unless you are 100% sure exactly how, and even then I would suggest calling a professional if at all possible. My father told me a story that happened many years ago. The shop door at his work needed to be adjusted and one of his co workers climbed up and started to adjust them. The foot long Metal bars you use to adjust them slipped out of the guys hand and tore all the way through the plywood wall and slung back and hit the guys arm around 10 more times In a fraction of a second before he could move out of the way. The first hit broke his arm like a twig the rest just chewed his arm nearly off like a saw. My father said it sounded like a machine gun and it was just a pink mist that covered the wall before the guy even really knew what happened it was all over. I've also heard a story of a guy that had his skull crushed and died when his hand slipped off and it came back and hit him

@@Pezinteresante A tank filled with a pressurized flammable gas (could be anything from a small barbecue propane tank, to large storage/refilling tanks). when they are exposed to fire, the heat boils the gas which increases the pressure in the tank eventually causing the over pressure relief valve to open (turning the tank into a flamethrower). The tank doesn't immediately explode because the liquid portion of the gas inside keeps the tank walls cool enough to prevent degradation, but once the relief valve opens the gas continues to boil off and an the amount of the tank that is protected by the liquid reduces until the walls eventually rupture and the remaining gas explodes with a huge fireball and mushroom cloud, and launches the tank shrapnel hundreds, sometimes thousands, of feet. Since there is no way to see the level of the gas in the tank it is impossible to predict when it will blow, and the minimum safe distance is so high that the only choice is evacuate the area. They sometimes leave an unmanned firetruck spraying the tank to help keep it cool and delay the explosion as long as possible to improve the chances of successful evacuation. If you haven't already you should search for BLEVEs on you tube since they are pretty impressive to watch as long as they are not threatening your life.

I'm a pilot. Airline transportation is the safest here in the US and in Europe than anywhere else in the world - however, getting on a small plane is extremely dangerous. Our level of standardized training is pretty good over all in the US, but the quality tends to drop off significantly when you discount airline training. A lot of for-profit flight schools are cutting corners on training students and pushing them through "fast-track" curriculums. I'm hearing more and more people brag about how they got their license in 2 months or less...and the rest of their training to commercial took less than another 4 months. These same "pilots" eventually end up at REAL flight schools afterward, saying they have no idea what they're doing...as licensed pilots. Some of them even licensed instructors! I know, because the school I go to gets these people all the time. These kinds of schools have disgusting, under-the-table deals with examiners, where students applying for their checkride to get their license are all asked the same exact questions, so instructors can "groom" their students to memorize a small portion of the knowledge they're supposed to know and get an easy pass on their checkride. It also makes the school and instructors look good. Doesn't account for all the stupid mistakes they'll make afterward when they get their training wheels taken off and have to fly by themselves. Can you imagine the consequences of that reaching the airline industry? A brand new first officer, who didn't know a thing about flying just 9 months prior, now second in command of an airliner with 140 people onboard? The last line of defense is each individual airline's adherence to legal requirements for getting type rated to fly bigger, more complex aircraft such as the 737 or A320. Thankfully those airlines will probably never budge, but we saw how complacent Boeing themselves have been with their own airplanes. Flight schools are headed in the same direction - all to save money and build a fake reputation.
tl;dr Don't fly in a smaller airplane with someone unless you REALLY know them and they take flying seriously. The vast majority of aviation incidents are pilot-induced. While in a small airplane, the factor that's most likely to kill you is whomever is at the controls

ACK the cat bites thing - part of why they're so dangerous is that you CAN'T clean them effectively! Cats have needle like teeth that drive bacteria deep into your flesh and then you swell up so quickly afterwards that the wound closes before even the blood can effectively flush the wound from the inside! You can clean it a bit but not fully!
If you get bitten by a cat seek medical attention IMMEDIATELY!! They can turn nasty in a matter of hours, and matter of fact cat bites kill more people than dog bites just bc of the infections they cause - and bc people don't take them seriously enough!!
Like the one time I got bitten by a cat it was the middle of the night so I went to the ER, and THEY DIDN'T THINK IT AN OVERREACTION. They told me I did the right thing, not enough people take cat bites seriously. They even said that the infections that cat bites cause are so nasty that the heavy duty antibiotics that they were putting me on were only effective in 60% of cases!! (And told me what to look out for, and if I had any of the signs they mentioned to come back IMMEDIATELY. Luckily the antibiotics (and tetanus shot) worked, but yea.)
DON'T FUCK AROUND WITH CAT BITES. They're minor injuries but they can fucking KILL you!!

One day the cat and her babies were under my bed and my mom called me from the other room. When I got up, i swung my legs down and startled that cat, and she bit me in the calf. We took her to the local shelter and bandaged be up, but the bite got infected, so i spent the next week or so home from school. Every couple of hours my parents would re-open the tiny little scabs and drain the pus out of my leg until it healed.

I opened up all the windows in the room and closed the door so it wouldn't get though the rest of the house. I called my dad to let him know what happened and waited 10min on the phone with him. After the first min I felt much better than I had and after I hung up the phone I put on a mask and rinsed the stuff down the drain then left the room for another hour before closing the windows. In those 2 days she had a massive heart attack because she couldnt refill her meds. It was heartbreaking seeing her in the icu. She was like my mother because my mother left me when i was 5. It was over a year ago and im still mad at everything involved including the cat, that still gets to live with my best friend. Rip mom ill miss you 😞

22:52 my dad, uncle, and I went out fishing 8-12 miles off California's coast near San Clemente on our 25ft fishing boat. The water was smooth in the morning, but we were catching no fish so we decided to head to Catalina, but again no fish. Rather than stay the night and head out in the morning, we thought we could make it back to the coast and then travel alongside it to our journey's origin. We didn't know but we put in the wrong destination in our GPS, Dana Point, about 6 miles south of San Clemente. This adjusted our route to leave the protection from Catalina and cross the open ocean without us knowing. It was the afternoon and the ocean quickly changed, becoming VERY rough, we had to slow down to a crawl to prevent us from being capsized. We almost capsized 3 times, and I was almost thrown off the boat twice (shoes had no grip). We finally made some progress after hours when the sea started to settle, the sun had just set, and we realized that we were 6 miles south. it was still very rough but more manageable until we lost our light. We were half a mile away from Dana Point and almost crashed into rocks off the coast in the dark. Thankfully that was the last obstacle, we made it back safely. I had been fishing all my life on the ocean and never encountered any of those things, and this was with a fully functioning boat, imagine if something broke??? It can happen to anyone and though it hasn't stopped me from fishing, I still have and encourage others to have a healthy fear of the ocean.

About one morning at about 4 am , we had an emergence. So I had to act promptly . When I tried to get up from the desk , my body would not move . My brain was active , but my body had closed down , very, very scary ! Thankful it didn't last long .

I actually have multiple things to add.
    1) Going on a vacation ski trip, especially if you live somewhere that's close to sea level. Lower elevations have a higher air pressure which results in oxygen molecules being packed close enough together that getting enough air isn't a problem. Higher altitudes have a much lower air pressure and as a result, getting enough oxygen is MUCH harder for people that aren't acclimated to that kind of elevation and hypoxia is very likely. This is especially bad at ski resort like Bridger Bowl where the elevation is 6,100- 8,700 feet.
    2) Going off the designated path when looking at geysers in Yellowstone. I don't remember the reason why but I think the geyser weakens the ground around it and at any point in the ground it could be boiling water with a layer of dirt on top that looks identicle to the ground around it.
    3) Buffalos. They are known to charge at speeds up to 35mph. For some reason, that fact doesn't seem to faze tourist that want to get up close for a picture.

15:20 a few years back I wanted to create an inhospitable environment for mold growing at the bottom of my plastic bin(which I kept in my room), so I basically went pouring all sorts of cleaning things I could find. Luckily, I was home alone and realised what I had done after only a few minutes(thanks to having read something about a fast food worker poisoning himself to death through mixing cleaning sprays). I got outside and called my brother, and spoke to him while assessing the situation, just to make sure I wouldn't start slurring my words, or showing signs of heavy poisoning. Felt slightly intoxicated for a few hours, and moved a bit unsteadily at first, but other than that I was fine.

I knew someone whose cat bit her and she didn’t go to the hospital and the bite got infected and got worse and worse until she finally went to the hospital and they had to do surgery on the hand to scrape out all the infected tissue since it couldn’t be saved since it was all necrotic. Now there’s a lot of scar tissue on her hand

The thing about sharp knives being less dangerous than dull ones applies to any cutting tool, for similar reasons. Dull saw blades are incredibly dangerous: a blade that struggles to cut wood can still cut through flesh almost instantly, and the more force you put on a tool, the less control you have over it.

2:00 Lived in Portland OR until I was 7. Mom started me on swimming lessons at age 4. She said I was more interested in pushing little girls into the pool than swimming at first, but really caught onto it after a few scoldings from dear old Mom about my assaults on females. Mom was preparing me to swim in the ocean safely from a young age & I never really appreciated it until now.
