This happened to my family when my father decided this path. It crippled my home maker mother, she had no money to get professional help in her corner. Fortunately us kids were older and not in grade school, be we were not in positions ourselves to help her, financially or emotionally. It’s even harder when you have the world saying “be who you ‘are’” to my father, instead of saying “sacrifice yourself for your family”.
My mother had the same thing happen to her at 50. She did not have a career established. 22 years later she’s broke, zero assets and I’m now her retirement. My advice to you would make sure she’s preparing for retirement. Help her budget once she gets a job. Pick a job that is not commission. Introduce her to Dave Ramsey.
One more thing... if she gets the house and sells it don’t let her invest the money. My mom lost every dime on the stock market because she trusted a financial advisor. Make sure she gets half of your dads retirement.

True. And too many women make the mistake of going into marriage without any means to fall back on (way to provide for themselves) in the event the marriage fails.
If My husband did this to me I would clean him out! I’d get a good lawyer and make sure my kids were ok since if he did this then he’s given up being a family or father.

So sad. Yea that's not workable.
1. Start gathering documents, make copies of EVERYTHING, especially bank statements and such, so the money doesn't "disappear" later.
2. Start putting money away in a separate savings account, hidden. Stash away the cash somewhere safe.
3. Get a safety deposit box for the copies of papers, hidden cash stash.
4. Hire a good lawyer, follow the advice, prepare, prepare, prepare
Actually hiding money from your spouse before or during a divorce is a ILLEGAL. This includes hiding cash, hiding assets, buying gift cards, anything. Judges will not look on this favorably. You have to divide all assets fairly according to how the court rules.

Also I feel like the husband should pay some of the house payment if they have kids ,because your still responsible for them and for them to make sure they have a place to stay.

My gosh. The more reading and research I do on this type of thing, the more I believe we take so little into consideration before getting married, should we ever be faced with divorce in the future. We spend way more time on choosing a reception band, china patterns, and discussing how many kids rather than considering our financial (and emotional) future. Truly disturbing. No judgement, because i was guilty too. This is one of many reasons why i don't know that i would ever get married ever again. Not without a prenup at least.

Amen. We buy alot of properties simply because if divorce situations. Good for business, bad for the couples. From the seller's perspective, It's quite a stressful situation but it happens everyday. Big business for lawyers too
1) Don't get married unless you are 100% in-love and trust the person! Never be scared of staying single!! It's better to be single than have to deal with a person that you don't get along with!! 2) Make sure to have enough money before you get married under your own name 3) PRENUP! 4) Understand the basics of finance, investing & budgeting! Nobody should get married without knowing this stuff!

Close the joint checking account and reopen a new account at the same bank. The bank can forward all the autodebits/autodeposits to the new account. You can close a joint checking account without your spouse present even if you are not the primary

I imagine it is a very hard decision to make because it literally upends everything just so a person can feel like themselves. Also, this person is a hero anyway because they are in the army.

Many people just get a job to make it through life and never get a career, so why not let your spouse support you? However I have to agree that in marriage, you need to retain your ability support yourself. Make sure you have a some certificate/employable skillset that you feel confident in so that you always have options.

Unfortunately, many people with gender dysphoria think that transition is going to 'fix' them, but after they transition all the fear, shame, self-loathing, and anxiety are all still there. Transitioning isn't magic, and won't fix all the other emotional baggage most people have. There's a reason many people are de-transitioning, but nobody wants to talk about it because it is a hard conversation to have.
This is truly devastating.

How did I prepare for divorce-
1) I went out and put a down payment on a new house.
2) I told my girlfriend I was moving back home with my parents for 6 months. I didn’t tell her I bought a house.
3) I watched her call me names, say I was a loser and unmotivated. She dumped me.
4) I closed escrow on a beach house in Southern California in a gated community.
5) I never looked back, I was 25. House is paid in full. I semi retired at 49. I date but the ladies never get to go to my house. I rent a little place for dates. No man cave. I have a house, garage, cars and travel when I want. No marriage, No divorce.
LOL, it seems like a lot of work and lies and omissions. Why bother the ladies, just don't date.

Also if you bought a house without telling your partner, while a divorce is going on that gives them alot of leverage to take that very expensive house from you especially in Cali. Even if it worked out you took a stupid risk.

Staying married for financial reasons sounds weird. Not as weird as the reason for the split.
You pretty much can't financially prepare for divorce.
The divorce laws will require you to properly disclose your finances. And in general you split the money and the debt.
She essentially abandoned her husband by refusing to move with him when he got transferred.

Unfortunately most states don't recognize exact 50/50 custody one person has to be primary, and depending on each person's income, the highest paying parent will end up paying child support. Even if it's 49/51. And it goes doubly so if the state gets involved and she starts collecting welfare.
Its complicated. Normally custody goes to mother. Now have 2 of those

I work with a bunch of women as a nurse. When one of them files for divorce they coach each other like nothing I've ever seen. You see Briffault Law in action. Men never get married. Never under any circumstances. This "guy" is already acting like a women by changing the terms of the relationship on the women 🤔.

It was crazy working in banking,l. Dave touched on the scam they pull. The woman often tells the husband that she found a “great rate” and they would save by refinancing. She brings her happy husband the refi documents. Among those is a quitclaim deed. He signs the documents. The quitclaim is used to take his name off the house. She takes that and files for divorce. He gave up
His share of the house but remains on the mortgage. So he gets to pay at the higher rate. She had no intention of refinancing. I saw that happen many many times. .

When women start thinking divorce, they are usually past the marriage counselor point. I was.

I have been divorced over 10 years now- remember one thing - LAWYERS COST MONEY- if you and your "soon to be X" are talking at all then try and split things out/talk things out. The longer you drag things out the more it is going to cost you- money wise and emotionally . Divorce is not an even separation it is a tare- some churches have a coarse called Divorce Care - find and church that does this and attend every session.
