There’s the anecdote of a gringo who finds a Mexican man sitting by a lakeshore, under a tree shade. Gringo asked what he did for a living. Mexican man told the gringo that he was a fisherman and he earned his living with a fishing canoe. Gringo asks why he wasn’t in the water fishing. Mexican tells gringo weather wasn’t good and best fishing season was only 3 months out of the year. Gringo tells Mexican he should work harder and get himself more boats and hire more fishermen. Mexican asks “why.” Gringo explains: “so you can make more money, fish more and maybe in a few more years of hard work you can make enough money to retire in this beautiful lake, sit by the lakeshore under the shades of these beautiful trees and enjoy life.” This might sound exaggerated but I know it’s a close depiction of our cultural approaches to life and living. Most Mexican get busy living and most Gringos get busy dying (quoting Shawshank Redemption).

great episode. i love that they mentioned that they specifically chose a non-expat neighborhood and life. it's a pleasant surprise from other retirement interviewees who emphasize expat neighborhood as a requirement. i know it's a personal preference, but it's cool to see it. because it's also how i'd prefer to live; among the people of the country. now-- just need to convince my husband that it's a great country choice.

I really should see other peoples content more so i can have even more context to where many viewers are coming from. So sad to hear so many people say that in order for you to live in Mexico that "You Have to" Be in expat only communities. The reality couldn't be any further from that statement. Thanks Jose. What a great couple! That is such a beautiful home and having an incredible artist filling the home with the warmth of her works is an added bonus. Great to have a big studio to work in Kaytee, and after your move I'm sure you have some added inspiration. I could also do some good work manning that kitchen and BBQ if I don't say so myself. Have Henckels and wasabi will travel! Everyday a mini pool party and cookout! Thanks for sharing your home and your love with us Greg and Kaytee. BTW-I grew up in Fort Lauderdale, FL and after college in '79 I moved to just outside of LA. After surfing and beach camping along Baja for over 40 years I jumped off the hamster wheel and moved to Ensenada last year. My only regret is not retiring and pulling the plug sooner. I love living here! Don't get me started on the friendly people and the food! Buena suerte ustedes dos. Viviendo tu sueno!

All the Americans appear to be happier. I am AA and I watch a lot of videos of black Americans living there and they appear to be more at peace and less stressed. I want that for myself and family but probably won't be Merida because I hate heat but most definitely out of the US..

@@angeebb3080 I'm not surprised. I've watched how my AA friends have been treated for decades. For all of my pale and pasty brethren, I am ashamed and hope you find your way to Mexico and a better life. And as Shreveport has been hotter than Merida this year, I think I'll be fine there. Just spend time at the beach. Maybe I'll see you there if you change your mind. Best of luck.

Jose, I was in Merida for the month of March. We stayed at 3 different Airbnb’s to experience the neighborhoods: Izimna, Las America’s, Altabrisa. What is the name of that street with the Fruteria and that park? Im looking to live in a neighborhood like that where I can walk to get my meat, fruits and socialize.

Naturally, when we live there we won’t be going to centro much. I could ride my bike there to the Main Street. That’s the life I want!! September 2023 is my goal. I’m cleaning out my storage unit now!

Great Video Jose! My wife know an elderly Mexican couple who live in an Expat community, but they do not speak English. He worked in the US enough to get $750 a month in SS$, but they rent a beautiful home!!!! In the US, it would cost over $500K. It's crazy. It has a pool, is brand new and something you would see in a magazine. It is somewhere around Mexico City, but every time they leave the Country, they hire private security to watch their home because a few years ago, the head of security for the rental community was breaking into people houses. LOL. My wife and are just looked what looked like a million dollar home for only $1KUSD a month. It had a grand piano, pool, hot tub, etc. Nuts! I love this couple and her Artwork is amazing!!! How much?
