Fourteen-year-old Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld) joins an aging U.S. marshal (Jeff Bridges) and another lawman (Matt Damon) in tracking her father's killer into hostile Indian territory in Joel and Ethan Coen's adaptation of Charles Portis' original novel. Josh Brolin and Barry Pepper co-star.

The Turkey Gobbler Guy needs his own movie. Such a rich, complex character, and they just kill him off.
Well, if he died imitating a cat, he may live 8 more times.
He needs a netflix serie...
Marvel brain needs to die
F'n academy didn't even give him a nomination for an Oscar...such a sham
Instead of True Grit it'll be TURKEY GRIT
Just realized he was the sniper in Saving Private Ryan
ironically shot by one in this film :v
Pvt. Jackson's grandpa.
And he was hit by an improbably accurate sniper shot fired by Private Ryan.
And Corporal Dunn in MW2
Also the same last name as his character.
Barry Pepper is such an underrated actor.
Amos Moses yep,i just knew that this was him from private jackson in saving private ryan...that because his acting was so damn good,he can play 2 completely different characters so well
I thought he played the role of Ned great.
@@balconi89 His man is Barry Pepper in real life and Ned Pepper in the movie.
Born for Westerns fer sure.
He played Robert Kennedy and he also played a photographer in We Were Soldiers. He was in The Green Mile too. And that awful movie, Battlefield Earth
"Too thin, Rooster! Too thin!" is probably my favourite line from this film.
My favorite Ned Pepper line is when Mattie says "I shot Chaney and I would have killed him but my gun misfired." And Ned says, "They will do it, and it'll embarrass you every time!"
I love that line too!!! You could see her gaining credibility with Ned there.
Yeah, it’s such an amazing scene because the whole movie has been her, cogburn, and la beouf chasing them - and here she is having a conversation with an outlaw leader. she learns a lesson from an outlaw who’s been doing this stuff for some time. They find some common ground while they are both opposing each other. It’s very cool.
LOL... sigh... SAD failure.
Hindsight is 20/20.
Shame...
That and "You do not varnish your opinions."
Clearly Ned is the sort who appreciates plain talk and sand.
Great character
I love the small detail of Ned Pepper constantly spitting while it talks. While I'm sure it's just a result of the line delivery, it makes sense as in the book of explains that a portion of his lip was shot away by Rooster Cogburn, hence the nickname "Lucky" Ned Pepper
Well now I didn know thar was a book, but this spit talk larned me
Much obliged
Thank you for sharing ! Now that I look at it closely, it seems Ned actually has a bit of a scar in this lower lip that could be a result of getting shot there. Nice makeup detail.
This dude could play Micah Bell in a RDR movie
Jeffrey Dean Morgan- Dutch Van Der Linde
Josh Brolin- Arthur Morgan
Barry Pepper- Micah Bell
Charlize Theron- Sadie Adler
Chadwick Boseman- Lenny
Karl Urban- John Marston
my exact thoughts. but to be fair, the actual actor who played micah bell in red dead would be perfect to play micah bell already, no point in recasting for that one. I suspect the inspiration for that character came from this film.
There's also the douchebag character in the joe schmoe show, that american "reality tv" show inspired by the truman show, in which only one person is not an actor, the douchebag character is also a blonde guy with a mustache, something about that combination makes those characters even more unlikable for some reason apparently.
@@dorkmax7073 DAMN Yessss
@@dorkmax7073 brolin isnt big enough, and boseman is too old, urban is too big and too handsome.
Coda Mission Micah- Barry Pepper
Dutch- Jeffrey Dean Morgan
Arthur- Bradley Cooper
John-Taylor Kitsch
Hosea- Gabriel Byrne
Bill- James Badge Dale
One of the rare gems of Western Movies. Also , one of the rare remake films that does BETTER than the original...
I agree
Don't let the boomers see you say that too many people will take offense on behalf of John Whine lol
It’s not even close-
My favorite western
@@OldUncleDan *Wayne but yes I agree lol
I love when the bad guy is actually good at negotiating.
Anyone else love the fact that Barry Pepper wore sheep skinned chaps in this film? You don't often see that in Westerns made after like 1960.
And you can wear them in Red Dead Redemption 2😂👌🏽
@@pjk3854 I'm working on a "Lucky" Ned outfit.
That guy at the end is a legend
That's my dad and it's the only movie he has ever been in. He's a legend to me.
@@Tinroofdeals woah? really? could you tell him ELOLELELOLEOLLEL for me?
I will.
Lol, the Turkey Fvker
He’s there to remind you you’re watching a coen brothers movie
Barry Pepper was cast perfectly for this role. Read the book and you'll see. It was written before the movie of course, but as you read it's like the character of Lucky Ned was written with Barry in mind.
"Well........do what you think is best Ned" I am not sure if they meant for that to be funny, but I laughed my ass off when I heard that line the first time (out of many) I saw this film.
"... think it over, first."
Great acting by Barry Pepper!
Barry Pepper is a very underrated actor.
yo
Ned Pepper is a brutal character, but even he, has a remnant of humanity. Later in the movie he tries to protect her by warning Tom Chaney: 'If any harm comes to this child, you won't get your share'.
Another memorable performance by Barry Pepper.
I think the type of trouble he might get into for what might happen to Mattie would be inconvenient for him to deal with- plus they might get ransom for her? I dont think he wants to hurt her I just think he may briefly be willing to for his own benefit if that benefit is great enough. It seems to be implied when he says “You know I’ll do it!” that he possibly has killed children before and that Rooster has come upon that crime scene or seen him do it.
Humanity or pragmatism, either way he is human.
He's a desperate man. He don't hurt becuase he wants to. Its just what will help him in that moment. He's dangerous. But he's not a monster.
Every crew needs a guy that just makes animal noises.
Somebody’s got to be expendable I guess.
Too thin rooster. TOO THIN!!
What does it mean? Excuse me, I'm not american)). Is it idiom?
@@user-oq8sq5rb2i yes. It means he didn't like the Marshall's proposition.
@@user-oq8sq5rb2i Too thin. It's transparent. Ned is saying he can see through it (the deception).
@@user-oq8sq5rb2i it means what he's offering to him is not enough.
Wow, didn't know Barry Pepper also played the sniper in Saving Private Ryan and the Prison Gard in The Green Mile. I think he just proved to be a whole lot better of an actor than what I thought from seeing TGM and SPR.
He's also in Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials and Maze Runner: The Death Cure
@@shanerose7204And he voiced Alex Mercer from Prototype 1
He was the protagonist in one of the finest films ever made: Battlefield Earth.
@@ExtremeSquaredIt's so good that it's bad.
I love when Rooster adds "...think it over first" realizing he might have gone too far in his lie. Haaha.
I love how everyone in this movie tries to outsmart eachother. Like the way things used to be.
Watched this for the first time last week and this scene came on, I was like "IT'S BARRY PEPPER!". Always a thrill to see him.
this dude was the best actor in the entire movie raw and spoke the way things would Really have been
Barry does a great impression of Robert Duvall
Yeah to me Robert Duvall got it right
Barry Pepper should have gotten an Oscar nomination for this.
(His character) Secretly the best part about the film. Maybe. So good.
What a coincidence that Barry Pepper... portrays the character.. Ned Pepper.
My boss at work asked me to do something and I replied..Too thin roaster, too thin...all I heard was a laugh after that..lol
Barry Pepper did an excellent job playing Ned, and I bet even Robert Duvall would agree.
I agree with you
Everyone i. This movie was better
@@easygrin1127I have to agree.
I went in expecting this to be like nearly all the other remakes (with the exception of "The Thing"), but I have to say that this one actually eclipses the original.
How appropriate the that Coens cast Barry Pepper to play "Lucky" Ned Pepper.
Great choice too
Guess that makes him Lucky Barry Pepper.
Life imitating art!
@@brandonellis8111 He did an excellent job portraying Lucky Ned, definitely.
I also loved his performance in "Saving Private Ryan" and "We Were Soldiers.":
Does anyone else like the way he shouts cogburn???
My fav part 😂😂😂
Pepper gets my nomination for "Most Historically Accurate Teeth in a Movie Set in the 19th Century". In reality, all of the characters in this movie would have teeth like his in real life, if they had any teeth left at all. The possible exception is Mattie. Hers may not yet have had enough time to rot to Pepper-esque proportions at her age, but she'd be well on her way.
I call BS I am 54 years old I have never been to a dentist and have very good teeth .Nor have I been to a Doctor since I was five years old, and yet I am healthy
You would be surprised how well teeth held up in an age before added sugar. Medieval peasants had quite good teeth. These guys probably ruined theirs through tobacco and hard living though.
@@xanatos3633 Fluoride.
Does anyone know who is responsible in a movie set for this job? (Make teeth like these.)
@@-DigitalExcel But not every make up artist knows this kind of job. Is there someone more specific?
Barry Pepper would make a great Micha Bell.
0:38 oh wow he spits sooo mutch 😂
He does have a messed up lip and prolly touge too
@@mattbatey2597 Yep. That's why he's "Lucky" Ned Pepper.
The whooly chaps are on point.
Goddamn, Barry Pepper is so good. He better get an Oscar someday. Or I'm gonna be pissed.
Anyone that says Hailee Steinfelds performance in this was poor is off their rocker. I hadn't a clue before watching it whether she had been nominated for any awards and I 'd have bet my house on an oscar nomination afterwards. Even Roger Ebert reckons her version of Mattie was superior to Kim Darbys although a healthy amount of that is probably owed to the Coen Brothers.
@D. Rüesch I've seen a lot of people say she was wooden.
Kim Darby was annoying as all get out though.
@@VideoMask93 I've never seen anyone say anything like that
Hallie was only 15 and Kim was nearly 23. Hallie was closer in actual age as Mattie was in the book. Hallie was nominated for an Oscar.
I’ve never seen a poor review of her performance by anybody in all these years.
Those chaps are a final boss move.
I feel like the wooly chaps were a star in this movie.
Ned wasn't in the movie for a long time but This was an awesome performance. That bellow is strong.
Barry pepper deserved at least an Oscar nomination for this role.
I love Berry Pepper as an actor, especially this role.
I’ll admit that Pepper did a good job here. (Does anyone else realize they have the same last name?) anyway, I actually thought Robert Duvall was portraying him again for a brief moment but then remembered I was an idiot for thinking so.
Barry Pepper, 10 years after Battlefield the Earth, Bravoooooooo!!!!!!!!😁
true grit is one of the best books ive read. it is more than just a simple western. it was special
a very expressive of strong westerns, a must of for connoisseurs,Actors and music flow into each other!!!!!!!!!
When did you realize this was the sniper soldier from private Ryan? Or that he’s playing a character with the same last name.
Me: just 13 years later!
Barry Pepper is amazing,
Something about the line “stove your head in”…..lol
Pepper was great in this role.
All I can hear is Alex Mercer shouting, "TAGART!!!"
Molonara Let me guess, you have a tumblr dedicated to Alex Mercer Content?
WTF. That guy randomly jumping out making turkey noises...how is this relevant lol
+Red Moon 96 well i guess you take what you can get
rodanzig Lol
Santi Jauregui lol
Red Moon 96 He was in the original too
It ain't relevant, but there was a lot of deranged characters in the Old West and still are.
I need to start saying "No more talk" instead of "goodbye" when I hang up.
I know Hollywood doesn't do anything original anymore (case in point lol), but I would have loved a Lucky Ned Pepper prequel. Character has a hard to see, rare depth.
Too thin Rooster, no more talk!
Rockstar definitely based micah bell after this guy
Barry Pepper prayed that entire movie
Barry pepper is a good actor he did a good job playing ned pepper
Barry Pepper is no Robert Duvall, but he's still pretty damn good. I wish Ned Pepper had gotten his own movie instead of Rooster Cogburn.
His name is Berry Pepper. He was remember for the Sniper in Private Ryan.
The tooth prosthetics are a great touch. You hardly ever see that in movies.
One of the few times an actor played a character with the same last name - Barry Pepper > Lucky Ned Pepper
This was actually better than the first one. (In my opinion of course)
OMFG I did NOT recognize Barry Pepper at all at first in this film with that gigantic, thick mustache that he has. In fact, when I first saw his character, I was honestly convinced that was Thomas Haden Church (the janitor from “Wings” and The Sandman from “Spider-Man 3”) instead of him because of that. How crazy haha!!! 🤷🏻♂️
Love you Barry 😉
So a lot of folks didn’t realize Barry was in saving private Ryan, but I knew immediately. I loved Private Jackson.
What’s absolutely terrible, is that while I also know Matt Damon, it took forever for me to realize that Matt and Barry already knew each other, prior to working on True Grit. I forgot that Matt was in Saving Private Ryan 😅.
Keep in mind, more than half the film is without Matt Damon’s character, so you can’t blame me for forgetting (Private Ryan, I mean).
What’s awful is Saving Private Ryan is in my top 10 favorite films, so I have no business being such an airhead about Matt
I love Ned’s outfit.
Anyone watch with subtitles? "Wolves down there wash the car bring 50 more officers..."
For an outlaw, he was weirdly honorable.
Did I just hear Alex Mercer? He sounds so familiar! (EDIT: Yes, it is.. O.o)
He was great in saving private Ryan
You know it a cool idea a live action reenactment of movie true grit
That's definitely micah bell
Watching this scene in 2021... I realise that on any given day I can alternate between being one of those 2 dudes on any subject at any time
I still can't get over chaney coaching her on how to shoot him . And then she doe's !
Was used to model Micah Bell from rdr ii.
Oh looks like a cool western movie, high stakes, charismatic negotiations, and... and.... the turkey guy. Just woke up and thought i had a stroke watching this.
Represent a difficult moment
Way better than the original. John Wayne was a piece of wood.
After that intense convo, dude jus waitin for em to walk up so he can do his chicken impression. Im guessin thats a shot at the original.
My favorite performances of Barry Pepper's would have to be True Grit, The Green Mile, We Were Soldiers, Saving Private Ryan, and The Maze Runner Series
He's fantastic in Spike Lee's 25th Hour, too!
He needs some lumineers in the worst way
Those sheep skin riding chaps are absolutely incredible
That’s exactly right
That's me at the end getting my 5 seconds of fame.
We need a prequel
Is that Big Bird's foot? Or something.
I bought Barry Pepper a coffee at Starbucks many years ago. Really nice guy.
Forever pressing 7.
Can anyone spell into words the sounds he makes?
ALOBLOLOLOBLOLOLBOLOLBLO
Perfect example on how bjj would come handy. Risk getting shot but if try to delariva guard u can swip him while his talking.
Good character but I have to say his best piece of work was Bobby Kennedy. Perfect.
The amount of spit generated in this scene is Oscar worthy
We got us the perfect Micah Bell right here
Found the inspiration for micah bell
@Gerry Buckets like that taco commercial said why not both
He was on the ground before we heard the shot
A wild Chicken man Appears
I can feel the spit from here.
Barry Pepper should have played Roland in the Dark Tower film
That movie was an abomination. Barry Pepper should be glad he wasn't associated with it.
Pvt. Daniel Jackson!
it means he can out out of character, it doesn't necessarily mean that his character was better played as Ned than the sniper in Saving Private Ryan. he was cast as the sniper because someone envisioned him being a natural fit, that doesn't mean the part wasn't good, it just means it was naturally him.
