Did you use What3Words? Tell me below 👇
@@npoleary never used it in the car always sent destination from my phone.
actually never heared of it🫣
Ah fair enough! 😅
Yes and I am pretty pissed off.
Use what three words regularly for its accuracy, shame Mercedes have removed but thanks for the workaround
Mercedes need to be honest at the point of sale because NO ONE and I mean NO ONE thinks when buying a car that features it was sold with are dependent on OTHER people using them!!!! I don't care what the terms & conditions say. I bought a car from a Mercedes being told it had what three words. There was no "but if other buyers don't use it we will take it off you". This is a grubby way to do business. Imagine you buy anything and one day you wake up burgled of the item by the SELLER because other people don't use the same item!! I paid for it as sold as a feature of my purchase and within weeks it was gone. Because people I have never met don't use it!!!
Why not just use on what3words on your phone and then navigate via Google maps or the Apple equivalent and then connect android or Apple car play. Easy enough to do so not a big issue tbf.
@ I’d rather have what was sold. Also I prefer not to fiddle with my phone while driving, it being illegal and all that.
Welcome to Tesla world. One day you walk out to your car. And you can’t open the front door with your FOB… only the rear doors… this is true…
Thanks, Nick. I thought something was wrong as Mercedes Voice would not support What Three Words. Thanks for the other option. Great support you give us across the pond. Joe
Bring back What 3 words Mercedes used it a lot, found it really useful
This is so annoying. Not only what3words doesn’t work any more, when I try to look up an address inside Mercedes Me app most of the time it doesn’t work unless I restart the app multiple times. It just shows empty results 4 times out of 5. Great job, Mercedes.
Nick, thanks a lot for the workaround you showed since sending to the app no longer works directly.
By the way at one point when I hadn’t yet realised that sharing from what3words didn’t work any more, the Mercedes Me app managed to “find” the address and sent it to the car. After about 20 minutes of following the route I realised the address was incorrect (some word matched with a random street). I was lucky to notice that but was very unhappy to deal with it while on a motorway.
Glad you enjoyed the workaround anyway!
You were the person that first showed me "what 3 words" with one of your videos. I have used it a few time, worked great. Thank you for the work around. And as always, your video's are extremely studio quality.
Awh thank you! I wish they were filmed in the studio, I’m always battling the sun 😅
One minute it’s sunny and then the next it’s cloudy (I shoot everything in manual).
In fact I am planning to do a full length behind the scenes how I film a video this year! Just waiting for the weather to be better!
@@npoleary Very exited to see that. I watch 100's of video's a week from many content creators. You are still 90% better than most in studio.
Awh thank you! 🙏
The purchases I make primary are for the functionality amongst a host of other aspects. Whether i use them once or at all, i personally believe they should not be removed as this is what was paid for. Whether or not the function is used, it shouldn't be removed. An example is Samsung's latest edition top range smart phone. Part of the S pen functionality was not implemented. Due to this, I decided to remain on last year's edition which retains the full functionality. If I buy due to the functions, I never need to consider whether or not anyone else is using it. In mitigation for Mercedes at least they had something in its place unlike Samsung with its current edition smart phone. Thanks Nick for the high standard vids. Truly informative and the fact that you were able to present a workaround, top marks. Keep it up. 😅
Glad you enjoyed the workaround! 🙏
Many thanks for the work around!
Been missing the ability to sent location via the W3W app to the car a lot! Thanks for the workaround. At the moment one of the most helpfull posts of the year for me :-)
Awesome 🙌
Glad you enjoyed the video! 🤓
Many thanks for sharing that nice workaround regarding What3Words
Thanks for the tip, Nick! Personally, I love the idea of what3words, but it would make way more sense if these three words would form a mini sentence so it is easier to remember!
Great vid and info Nick. I'll use the workaround in future.
Thank you! 🙏
Hi Nick… You can understand why Mercedes have dropped the license but that’s a clever way round the system. I use the send to vehicle a lot it’s superb. Thank for the tip. 👍
Glad you enjoyed the workaround! Thanks for watching! ☺️
Hi Nick thank you soo much for this. As always very useful video. I tend to use what3words very often and sad it’s gone from the Mercedes and voice intergration but as you say the work around is the next best thing and will suffice 🙌🏿
No worries
I had loads of people message me to make a video about it, but rather than just say “yeah it’s not working” I wanted to suggest the best solution I can find 🙏
Very much appreciate the update on What 3 Words and the workaround in particular. I must confess I seldom used this service as I did not often need pin point location accuracy. It was a "nice to have" feature on my E-Class 450, but I have other annoyances with MBUX that I would gladly give up What 3 Words for if Mercedes would fix -- such as a feature to turn the music OFF so it does not restart the next time you start your car and startle you and your passenger.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the workaround!
Ah what I would love as a feature request is a start up volume. Music can play but you can control what volume it will always start at.
I'm metal detectorist and I use W3w to locate arranged group digs in fields, it was one of the selling points of buying the car so not happy that the licence hasn't been renewed
I was using What3words on my GLE. Thank you for the workaround tip.
No worries! 🤓
Thanks very much for this. I thought it was me who wasn’t using wot3words properly. I’ll try the work around.
No worries! 😇
Hi Nick if we don't have the use of an apple phone can w3w be linked to mercedes cars using an android phone? Regards Alan
I always used what3words but nearly always sent it from my phone. So never noticed that it had been removed. I do a lot of walking and very useful to indicate out of the way parking places.
Yeah when I had used it, it was via voice but at least you can send it through this method still! 😎
I was trying to use WTW more but it was a pain to recall where I wanted to go, just lazy. Then I saw your video, tried the workaround and it's sweet! To be honest I prefer this way as it's easier than voice commands. But if MB decided to improve their maps set up so it wasn't just twice a year, then I would be more inclined to use it but as it is right now it's just not up to snuff compared to the other options, GMaps, Waze etc. Cheers.
Glad you enjoyed the workaround! Ah yes I often use GMaps too! 🤓
Ah, that explains a lot. Got my first MB just before Christmas and couldn't w3w to work and ended up concluding it was due to me not running neither app nor car in English - but it might as well be this.
I know it must have stopped around about that time. It worked for my tips and tricks video (posted in between Xmas and new year but filmed a few weeks earlier) so must have been in December somewhen!
Very useful Nick good work. Only used a couple of times in difficult areas so understand Mercedes deleting it. With a workaround no problem.
Thank you! 🙏
i’m a cabbie and it was very useful , thanks for the update 👍
Thanks for watching! Glad you found it useful!
I often use it to pin point access gates to small caravan sites - shame on you Mercedes for removing this. Obviously judged as a low risk cost cutting option with little effect on sales & reputation. The good news for uk buyers is that your +£40k car might now be below that threshold & you’ll gain on reduced VED - NOT!! Thanks Nick for alerting us to it and for the work-around
W3W needs to be reintegrated into MBUX, it was defo part of the reason I was so impressed with the nav options when my MB dealer was pitching the deal to me in mid Q4 24.
This is becoming a massive issue that people are now becoming more aware of, not just in terms of features in cars, but for example purchasing movies from streaming providers, computer games, music, software etc paid for but disappearing years later when the company no longer wants to support it for whatever reason.
Its also now starting to happen to physical devices that use cloud based servers - imagine paying for a device, only for a couple of years later, it to become useless as the manufacturer stops supporting it as 'its an old model' or worse go bankrupt and switch their servers off completely.
If a company sells you something implying it will always be there, and/or you will always have access to it, then there should be enforced compensation for those that break it.
Imagine paying Mercedes for a lifetime MBUX feature, only for it to be withdrawn on older cars in a few years time as they no longer want to support it... its only a matter of time!
Quality, reliability and honesty.
What three words was a great improvement to the Merc satnav. What a penny pinching by the Great Merc company. Shame on them for not evening informing customers 😞😖
… and thanks for the heads up and work round.
This is the final straw for me. I often need to find construction compounds in the middle of nowhere, often not easily seen. W3W was right to the door. I will take my £50k new car purchase to a more enlightened manufacturer.
Great video & work around. I would like it added back to Mercedes.
Use what3words quite often if a customer lives at an address with no house number, however it's easy enough to just use it on your phone with Google maps instead tbf. I would imagine if you've got your phone connected with either Android auto or Apple car play you can still use via your car.
Nice one nick great work around it’s a same MB don’t keep there customers properly informed .
At least there’s a kind of work around 🤓
Apart from using What Three Words for day to day navigation, it comes into its own in an emergency situation when you need to describe where you are at any incident. All the emergency services have access to it. It can be a life saver. Why would Mercedes give it up???
Well I mean for the Mercedes Integration was purely navigating somewhere, so you couldn’t look up a location that way. So for emergencies you’d just load up the app and give what3words of where you are.
I guess if you yourself needed to get to the what3words address though, but at least we can do it via the app!
Yes used what three words great for navigating to an exact location, have missed it. Please MB bring it back.
A real shame. I didn’t use it often but it was invaluable meeting up with family at venues with large car parks. Also used it recently meeting up with friend in small car park in the New Forrest, which would not have been on any POI or have a postcode. Rather than withdrawing it Mercedes should have been publicising it. It isn’t in my handbook.
Thats another helpful video Nick albeit disappointing Mercedes-Benz have removed the feature
Glad you enjoyed the workaround! 👍🏼
I have to travel to fields in the middle of nowhere and found What3words extremely useful - bring it back.......now!
At least we can use it in the app for now 👍🏼
Hi Nick, real shame WTW has been removed. Trouble is to the average owner Mercedes didn’t promote WTW so I suspect that is reason it wasn’t used enough. In an accident WTW is a vital tool for emergency services to locate someone where minutes matter. Mercedes should reconsider. Keep up great work.
Well you couldn’t locate where you were with Mercedes so you don’t loose that functionality. To see where you are and share with others you use the app.
The Mercedes system just allowed you to navigate somewhere with the 3 words
Never even knew my 23 GLE had it, but I now want it. Bring it back Mercedes please and then tell us we have it.
Thanks for that update, Nick. It is a shame that Mercedes has decided to drop the What3Words app from their cars. I can imagine that it may not have been widely used as not many people know how powerful it is. I have a new Mercedes Benz scheduled to be built for me in 12 days from now (hopefully) and I was looking forward to having that feature baked into the car.
That’s alright, at least it can still be used with the same accuracy from the app! 🤓
Ooo nice what did you go for?
I wonder if you can create a voice command task/routine in an app like IFTTT that can auto run some or all the steps.
I had become reliant upon What3Words to find remote locations and now miss this excellent feature. Unless w3w is restored and speed camera locations are added to MBUX my replacement car won’t be a Merc.
I want my cars to be as powerful as possible. Please bring back this feature.
I wonder how much Mercedes have saved by not renewing this licence? Undoubtedly none of which will be coming the way of existing owners who have lost the service!
Yeah I did wonder how much it costs a car manufacturer to implement that in a custom package to their multimedia systems. I tried to research it but most likely it’ll be an undisclosed amount.
And come to think of it, What3Words is free for the end user (for me and you) so they have to make their money somehow. I bet it costs an absolute fortune to put that in millions of cars. I’d imagine it’s a yearly fee or something rather than a cost per API request (per time it’s used) but I could be wrong. Or it could be both!
Either way, it still works with this workaround 😇
A real shame - have made good use of what3words - please Mercedes do the right thing - renew your licence
I have wondered how much it costs. For us it’s free as the end user but What3Words have to make their money somewhere so they obviously charge for integrations in platforms and systems etc.
And I bet to integrate it into millions of cars, I bet it costs more than I can imagine!
I like what3words and if Mercedes are reading these could we have Alexa back as well. Cheers nick love the videos
I didn’t use it often but I did like the w3w integration and it’s a shame to lose it
At least there’s still a way to use it! 😇
Nick, I appreciate what you do for the MB community. I recently bought a GLC 300 coupe with all the features. Then I realized that a standard feature in most cars now, speed limit detection, was not available in my new car. This was not explained to me at the moment of purchasing the car. I agree with other comments here. There should be honesty regarding the features that are phased out or not enabled in supposedly full loaded vehicles. Do you know any work around this issue? I would like to see the speed limit in my heads up display.
Thank you! ☺️
I had lots of requests to make a video on this but rather than just make a video and say “it doesn’t work” I wanted to find a workaround first. So this workaround was the easiest that I could find.
For Traffic Sign Recognition, not all cars can do that, it depends on the specification that was on the car / you ordered / the previous person ordered. But if it doesn’t have it, there are workarounds, you could use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Google Maps and Waze have this built in, but none of that will go directly to a head up display.
I have seen this: shop.mercedes-benz.com/en-gb/connect/pdp/traffic-sign-assist/717
But I have no idea what cars are even compatible with it or if Mercedes has even rolled this out for the UK so might be worth having a look.
Used it all the time. Not smart Mercedes, you just demonstrated that functions of my £70 grand car could disappear just because you are penny pinching. What next, navigation? Phone integration? It’s bad enough that many functions become subscription only after three years, which alone may make me think twice come replacement time. Bravo, well done, excellent customer care and marketing.
Thanks for the tips, I have been using this apple map share to Mercedes App to Car for almost 99% of the time. Just want to add that please do not use Google Map share to Mercedes App. I am not sure why, but it always send me to the wrong area. About W3W, one of the main obstacle for me to use it is because I am not a native English speaker with some accents that "Hey Mercedes" could not understand. Unless Hey Mercedes incorporate some AI function, like ChatGPT which can almost understand all sort of accents when you try to speak to it.
Yeah that was one of the things I had tried and Google Maps just messed up so Apple Maps does the trick.
Won't miss it , have only used it once in my life and that was for a contractor to get to my house.
Can see the use for it in Ukraine but not here .
I've depended on W3W since I got my EQA because - at least in metro Tokyo - I have found the M-B navigation software to be woefully lacking! Overall, the whole M-B experience in Japan has been quite disappointing. I was more satisfied in general in Japan with my VWs.
Used it and supported the idea from early in its inception. Was very pleased to get it on 250e. Is especially useful for eg ambulance at night.. hope they reinstate for the commercial vehicles
I wondered why I kept getting the very annoying "I can't help you with that at the moment ". It's not true that they've improved their alternative... have to enter many destinations several times.
Just another confirmation that Mercedes is untrustworthy and are pretty useless at software as they demonstrated with my GLC.
Thanks Nick. If it hadn't been for you I wouldn't have found out how to operate my current but soon to be discarded Merc.
I've never used it 🤷♂️, but I've always had the app ready, especially as I used to go MTB riding on my own occasionally, if I ever had an accident I thought I might be the best thing, having said that, not many people I know use it.
Yeah I still do have it installed but very few used it. I guess it was one of those nice to have things though!
I’m so upset as I was using WTW and went to use it this past Tuesday and was greeted by that stupid message. Mercedes why do you treat us like you hate us? Not only did you take off the track pad in the middle of the car and leave it with a rubber ugly square, your steering wheel isn’t even heated. I’m actually thinking of trading off my MB.
I never knew I had this feature so I'm not missing it.
Fair enough! 😅
Bring back what3words, it's the most accurate pin point location method for navigation. Don't ignore Voice of Customer, they pay the money. Mercedes must put it back!
Even the Emergency Services use it!
I've always used the app on my phone and sent it to car.
Check you out 👀 haha
I always used the voice in the car but with that of the way, I guess this is the only way now
I didn’t even know it was on there 🤦♂️
coordinates may work
Thanks for the workaround. What three words is great and a big loss to Mercedes drivers.
No worries glad you enjoyed the video! 🤓
Mercedes Benz will do whatever they want to do. I bought my car which should have had augmented reality navigation, it was an extra I requested. When I received the car it did not have it. When I questioned it with the dealer, they contacted MB and were told it had been discontinued.
Augmented Reality hasn’t been discontinued as far as I’m aware. I’ve seen it on plenty of cars but it is a cost option. Looks like it’s in their brochures etc.
However there was a chip / semi conductor shortage a few years ago which did affect certain components. Dealers can give more info on that though.
If you have it installed on your phone doesnt the app show up on apple car play / android auto on your car?
What3Words have never made a CarPlay app so no. But they do have an Apple Watch app!
Well we are to blame for not using it more often. It’s really useful
If everyone replaced postcodes overnight it would be brilliant! I’d never have to search for that house or the entrance to a specific road etc
Too bad…I really liked being able to use What 3 Words in the integrated Mercedes system. Hope Mercedes renews its license with What 3 Words.
Flabbergasted, I used What3Words a number of times purely for the accuracy of the 9 x 9 squares. As Nick said post codes can cover quite an area. Bad move on Mercedes part I feel, they needed to give people more time to see and understand the benefits as the Emergency services use it now.
At least there’s a workaround to still use it in the car 😎
I’ll keep the app on my phone as you never know, emergency services do use it as you say!
Hey Nick,
Would you know if Mercedes has any plans to integrate wireless Android Auto/Apple Carplay (without using third-party adapters)?
They already have all new Mercedes have wireless CarPlay and wireless Android auto. They introduced it on their facelifts 👍🏼
@@npoleary Ah great!, is it possible to get that feature on the older models, for example a 2018 A Class?
It’s just on facelifts, so wireless CarPlay came out in 2022/2023 ish for the A-Class. So any model prior to that, you just use an adapter if you need it wireless.
Yes and I want it back😢
I have to say - I rarely use W3W - I tried it just to 'have a go' - but can't be bothered to look up what the W3W are. I think if they were PART of the address for where I need to be - I would do it - but as it's another step to find out the info - I never bother. Hey ho.
Ah okay makes sense, what do you use instead? Postcode for navigation?
@@npoleary Yeah postcode - works 99% of the time. I find Google better than Merc TBH - the voice prompts seem to be better - but I miss the visual goodies when not using Merc - particularly the traffic light thingy - you know. Oh - and the long press on the 'voice assistant button' on the steering wheel - learnt that trick from you - really really useful - thx!
Hi Nick, I moved lately from Germany to Morocco and found out that Mercedes me app and advanced map do not work. Any suggestions or work around?
Thanks
Go very careful when importing and exporting cars. I remember when I went to buy an Apple Watch Cellular in the USA and almost got caught out.
Basically and to simplify it the best I can, phones are one of the only devices out there that can “roam” on other networks in countries far from home. However lots of other devices and cars cannot, they are only ever designed to work in the country that they were designed for. This is due to the very complex nature of signal frequencies in each country. Some for example may work in UK and Europe but go any further round the world and you may find it won’t work at all.
Really sorry as I’ve never imported / exported a car the only thing I can suggest is that you contact Mercedes and see if they can offer any support on it to see if anything can be done but as they often do not “modify” cars I don’t think anything can be done but you’ll have to ask them.
With built-in Mercedes maps being complete crap in some countries (I lived in Spain and Bulgaria, in both native navigation is barely useful outside of large coties), I stick to 100% using CarPlay and Google Maps. W3W was a great way of “pinpointing” the exact square of, say, tricky garage entrance, but I found a good replacement using GMaps pins. So personally I won’t be missing this feature ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Ah fair enough! I have heard sat nav quality varies round the world. I must admit I do use Google Maps a lot, I cycle in between the car’s one, Apple Maps, Google Maps and Waze. But find Google Maps is better! And free 👀
As Google have bought Waze, they began incorporating Waze data into GMaps (e.g., police presence reported by other users). It is truly one of the best map solutions out there, I agree with you.
There should be laws against these types of practices. More and more manufacturers are taking away "ownership", force you to pay for additional features (I just had my mercedes being added additional features such as CarPlay that was already there but not enabled). We as car-owners have no say in Mercedes's contemplating saving costs by not renewing their licenses.
What is next? Mercedes removing the anti-lock brakes because they do not want to renew their licenses with Bosch?
I think it is very bad practices to remove features that a customer inherently already has paid for but the manufacturer steps back on the licenses afterwards. As the saying goes, there are no backsies once you bought something that is most people, a significant investment. BMW back-down on their "rental" seat-heating. Maybe Mercedes is taking the temperature of the water to see how much backslash they will receive from their users.
I'm already upset that by 2027 my car won't longer be connected including the emergency services/crash detection.
PS: As for these particular feature, What3Words, I have used it in situations where Mercedes navigation could not locate the proper address using the "regular" features. Around 20x to 30x times last year...
Famous last words; we own nothing and have to pay for everything.
If Mercedes would remove the method you have outlined in (as always the case) your excellent video, that would truly be upsetting...
Hello, I tried to use it but seems difficult as you need to remember the 3 words, so I stopped using it.
I think it’s pretty useful for one off events so for example if someone said, meet me at the entrance to a walk in the middle of the countryside, they can say those 3 words located at the square.
I feel a bit cheated by Mercedes given that this was a promoted feature when I bought my car. That the company did not send an email explaining the situation does seem to point to a certain disregard for customers.
I used to use W3W with both my Mercedes, one of the reasons being that sharing a location from Google Maps to the Mercedes Navigation used to take you to the post code and not the exact location. Whilst I was disappointed to find that W3W was no longer supported, I've since discovered that they appear to have fixed the interface to Google Maps, and if I now share a pin location, Mb navigation now take me to the precise location. I've only used it a few times recently but it seems to work. Anyone else tried this?
I tried this method from What3Words app via Google Maps to share to Mercedes but it was not accurate. So maybe it only works for certain locations or the pin drop.
Very disappointed with MB taking away W3W’s. I was using it all the time as a lot of my work places are in remote areas and W3W’s is the only reliable way of finding theses locations
At least we can still use it via the app, it’ll offer the same accuracy 👍🏼
Thanks for letting is know. Thought I had a fault. Useful tool. Disappointing Mercedes have removed.
Hi Nick never used 3 words in car but would really like to get the sat nav on my 2025 EQB to report a traffic incident
You can 👍🏼
Just hold your finger on the centre of the map then you can report from there 🤓
Bring it back
Bring it back please
I do 30k miles per year and only use Google Maps. I have what 3 words on my phone but never use it.
The same for me! Apart from the 30k miles per year, but yeah Google Maps is good! 😎
Mercedes used to lead ..... but now they follow. WTW will be back in Mercs once their management have woken up.
