Here in Brazil, Sega could make a powerful local partnership soon in the Master System years. Tec Toy is a loyal partner known for its aggressive and well funded marketing campaigns and ads. Full double page ads in the biggest selling videogame magazines were common. It had a strong start by selling a portuguese-translated version of Phantasy Star in 1988 that caught brazilian gamer's hearts and minds and our pop culture by storm. RPGs were far from being the strongest game genre here, but Phantasy Star changed it all. Besides that, Tec Toy was bold enough to advertise Sega consoles games even in media outlets not dedicated to gamers. The aggressive ads had mostly the same sales pitch as the Sega ads in the US, being the only major difference that here Sega didn't compare itself that much with Nintendo - well, it never needed to, because Nintendo was never even quite a competitor...lol...Nintendo was the company that needed to catch up. As a long-term result, Master System and Mega Drive (Genesis) outsold Nintendo consoles by an enormous margin. Nintendo did form a similar local partnership with local electronics maker Gradiente late in the game in 1992 to sell the Snes console and games, it was very well funded, but mostly slow to react. Redesigned Master System consoles are being sold by Tec Toy still today. There is some interesting info regarding Mega Drive titles sold or even developed by Tec Toy. An exclusive port of Duke Nukem 3D for the Mega Drive comes to mind. So the conclusion is that yes, Brazil is the place where Sega beat Nintendo. This video is very amusing. Thank you.
Hi, I'm Brazilian and I really enjoyed your video, my friend, let's say that we were very lucky to have such an empress in Brazil, Tec Toy made us very happy on your channel.
I am from Brazil and loved master system.
TecToy, caraio! Never tought that you would do a video in this topic. It is rare to see Master System videos, and even more rare to see videos about these br games on non-brazillian channels. The funny part is that the SMS is sold until today in new revisions here. The way you said Zequinha was cute, tho haha.
Hi friend, i live in brazil, i came here to tell you that you missed one most famous game, a port of the Wonder Boy 3, Dragon's Trap were made here in brazil, just changing the game sprites for the characters of one famous child comic series called ""Turma da Monica" (Monica's Gang), and the game is called Monica no castelo do Dragão. (Monica in the dragon's castle) Even now with the Steam's Wonder Boy the dragon's trap, someone released the sprite changes to swap for monica's gang too, it's really cool. Search it up!
I'm from Brazil and I had a Master System. I had absolutely no idea all these games were only released there! with the exception of the ones using local characters and portuguese, of course.
Sonic Blast for the Game Gear was also ported to the Master System by Tec Toy only in Brazil, while the port remains completely loyal to that of the Game Gear gameplay and soundwise, the graphics suffer some color palette limitations resenting from the platform transition, but It solves the screen resolution problem the game had in the Game Gear due to the pre-rendered sprites being so large that you couldn't see too much of the playable characters' surroundings.
I was about to say that the Gunstar Heroes SMS cart was a fake, which is a shame because that would've been awesome if it were true. I think if THGM wanted a true 20th entry for the list I would've gone with Sonic Blast, since it would've been the only exclusive Sonic title exclusive to the Master System in that region.
I think there are only 19 official exclusives which is why I had to add a mythical entry at the end. Sonic Blast isn't a Brazilian exclusive, it was also released in South Korea.
Yeah that page said it was only released in Brazil when I checked it a few hours ago, and now it says South Korea as well when I check it again, yet I cannot find any corroborating information outside of that particular Wikipedia page that Sonic Blast got released outside of Brazil. Not even the Wikipedia page for Sonic Blast corroborates a South Korean Gam*Boy (Samsung's rebranded Master System moniker for that region) release. None of the Sega or Sonic centric wikis have any info on that either, and they seem to be able to fill in information missed by Wikipedia for those topics. Did you happen to come across a South Korean copy of the game while you were globetrotting, THGM?
Hello!Im Brazilian,i liked this video and channel i never tought someone would ever make a video about, even not playing none of this games Sorry for bad grammar,as I said I’m brazilian
Haha. It's totally true that it's still being sold in Brazil, along with his younger sibling, the Mega Drive. Speaking of which, there are a few Mega Drive games that only Brazil got such as a port of Duke Nukem 3d (Spoiler alert: Stay with the PC version... Or any other version for that matter), so if you ever wanna to make a sequel to this video, there's fodder for it. Another interesting curiosity is the Zeebo (Technically it was also in Mexico, but Brazil got this... console... a few months prior to Mexico), although I don't know if it's even possible to get games legit for it anymore since the only way to get games was digitally... Hey, at least had bad ports of Resident Evil 4 and Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart.
11:57 "Overall this game is a pretty poor fighter. The fights are pretty cluncky and the controls are bizarre and random, you can literally jush mash the kick button and win every fight on the first try. So this game is nothing special, really." Well, sounds like an accurate port of Virtua Fighter to me.
Master System is commercialized until today in Brazil, in a 200-game version with an internal disk. Mega Drive/Genesis has actually a new version too, with HD support.
It's probably not the case any longer (it may not have even been the case then) but when I originally picked up Fire & Ice it was thought to be the hardest to find and rarest SMS game due to never having been released outside of Brazil. I was happy to see its inclusion on this list. It goes without saying TopHat, but you know your stuff.
You forgot about Sítio do Picapau Amarelo en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S%C3%ADtio_do_Picapau_Amarelo_(video_game) (Pictures and info in Portuguese: www.sega-brasil.com.br/Tectoy/index.php/S%C3%ADtio_do_Pica_Pau_Amarelo ) According to Wikipedia, Sonic Blast was released for Master System in Brazil only. Also, the images from Rio and the music (which is a mix of salsa and samba) are quite stereotypical, but maybe that was the idea. Very interesting video.
Hey dude. I just wanted to say this was a really awesome video. One of your best :D In regards to other lists, since you mentioned it in this video, I AM a little curious what sort of resprite work Brazil did to some of these games if you ever wanted to discuss those at all. Is there some weird version of Alex Kidd starring some Brazillian cartoon character I've never heard of?
I'm imagining what it would be like to go to a Brazilian game store and damn, it would be nice to go to one and see loads of brand new Master System or Mega Drive games on the shelves.I miss going to game stores back in the late 80's early 90's, so much diversity and choice back then, even if you didn't know what you were buying, just going by the box art and screenshots on the back!
Mostly just ports for Brazil where the master system was pretty much the king of video games there from what I've read/seen. Apparently, it was because consoles are taxed very heavily there. I heard a rumor that at launch buying a PS4 in Brazil cost the equivalent of about $2000 USD because of tax.
@@Jimalcoatl Yeah, it was even called PS4K because it was worth 4000 of the local money. Video games still have a very high tax in Brazil, at around 72%.
Very nice video. These are from a time where we could be proud of being brazilian, but now all we can be is ashamed. At the 90 there were so many brazilian games. Sega became so strong here.
In another video he said something along the lines of there still buying and selling master system and mega drive in there stores in 2018. That's cool I remember in like 2001 I went into Kmart when the neogeo pocket color was out I picked one up. Also which was weird the game gear was there also for a short period of time and game gear games. It's cool and all I just think it be weird like if today going to GameStop or best buy and they had brand new snes games on the shelf. Thing is Brazil is far different from the u.s tho so I guess nothing dies off after a few years they keep it in stores alot longer years longer than we would.
Aqui no Brasil em 1998/ 1999 jogava tanto o Master System quanto o Dreamcast sem problema algum. Insanidade é deixar de jogar um console só por que os gráficos são ultrapassados.
i am guessing the master system held on longer in brazil due to its being a more affordable option that thew 16 bit systems in a country at the time was not too strong economically.
Right..But the Mega Drive was successful here too..So much so that TecToy also invested heavily on it, its add-ons and games, giving us some gems of exclusives for it too..
Technically, Shiny only developed Earthworm Jim for Mega Drive and then ported it to Super Nintendo and then made a Special Edition for Mega CD (which was ported to Windows 95 by Activision). The Master Sytem version is a port of the Game Gear version which is a port of the Game Boy version which was developed by Eurocom.
I hate to be picky but I think you may have missed a couple, there was another Sonic game on the Master System in Brazil (a Game Gear port) and a game called Sitio de Picapau Amarelo (probably spelled that incorrectly) which is very similar to Castelo ra Tin Bum.
I Brazilian liked this video of exclusive games of the Master System, but should make the list of the exclusive games of genesis (Mega Drive in Brazil)
I had that Ren & Stimpy game on my GameGear. I loved it as a kid. I remember one of the passwords being Yaaargggh!!! or something like that. I don't consider that Brazil only. It was a hard game, but my nostalgia goggles make me think it was really good platforming fun. I also had that GameGear X-Men game in the US. I need to quit arguing with your title.
Dude!!! 😄Oh, your thumbnail are so deadly than WMD 😀 just knew it now if master system II are very popular in brazil.. + Good Job & Good Luck. 👍 to your vid dude ☺
I will say those Woody Woodpecker graphics are pretty impressive for the SMS. Pity the controls are butt. That Ren and Stimpy game doesn't look too bad either. The rest are pretty average looking 8 bit fair IMHO.
Trying to type this comment one more time: I really enjoyed this video because I got to play some of the games featured on this list as a kid, growing up in Brazil. In fact, I even had a copy of Fifa 96. It was a really bad port of the Mega Drive version. It played terribly, had ugly visuals and didn't even support multiplayer mode. I was really disappointed when I got it as a birthday gift from my parents because I really enjoyed the 16-bit version of the game. My cousins owned a MD with the game and I remember we would play it for hours whenever I got to go to their place. This was probably one of the biggest disappointing games I ever had.
While I do understand that, and while it also was an exclusive to Brazil on the SMS, what i'm trying to convey is that it was not just exclusive only to the SMS and was not exclusive only to Brazil, so my initial impression was that it initially seemed a bit misleading. Either way, It was known to be a rushed port onto the SMS as indicated by a lack of QC, so certain things were missing, graphical glitches occured and music was either not attached to the correct levels or even altogether missing in some levels. I did enjoy the video though :-) Cheers.
i would say Masters of Combat but that did get an original release ive just seen a bundle on ebay with micro machines wish me luck love master system game collect yeah some of the games suck but the collection for this system is so interesting and you can get top games for peanuts not like megadrive and snes where ever game is 30 pound ive only got 3 games so far i have rainbow island what it getting quite rare now few copies floating on amazon for 8 pound might buy out the market lol
Well SF2 is better than MK3 on SMS but it mostly suffers from "8-bit special move prevention" AKA "Why can't I do a fireball?" just like all the NES fighter bootlegs. Only good 8-bit fighter port I ever played was SFA on the GBC, all the moves worked.
I was pretty shocked by just how bad the Game Gear/Master System port of Mortal Kombat 3 was when I finally got it. It's far worse than even the Gameboy version!

What happened with that Brazillian exclusive 20 games title too?
aye?
Your avatar makes me think you're related to Ted Bundy.
That too, 20 em 1
@Sasqautcha Bedford? I always saw them in a rusty Morris Minor :p
This list is why SEGA will always rock my world. Earthworm Jim, Gunstar Heroes, SF2, and Fire and Ice all games I want to play on that awesome system.
I am from Brazil and loved master system.

"Ferias Frustadas do Pica-Pau" Thats a very good portuguese pronunciation right there! Congrats sir!
We also recieved a couple of those here Portugal my friend ,)
Great vid sir. Fascinating to hear more about the SEGA Master System in Brazil!
Master system version of Street fighter is better than the Commodore 64 version. That says a lot.

Awesome. This is definitely a unique list that got me very interested in finally getting a Master System. Keep up the great work!
That Virtua Fighter game is based on the Japanese animated series and the gunstar heroes was proven to be fake sadly

Like anything "Brazilian", you trimmed it all down to a nice manageable patch. ;)
Wow, always knew there were unusual Brazilian video game publishings but this was a wonderful summary!

Man, these games look awesome. Way better then some of the exclusives we got in Canada like Dynamite Dux.
Here in Brazil we got Dynamite Dux as well. And Gunstar Heroes wasn't released for Master System.
Nice portuguese accent! cheers! Lovely video, as always!!!!
Things Brazil loves: 1. Sega Master System 2. Everybody Hates Chris 3. Salgadinhos. Maybe in that order.
3:49
Umm, excuse me, this is a straight rip-off of Monster Bash for DOS, player animations are a dead giveaway
Amo o Master System e sou Brasileiro. Muito bom o vídeo :)

TecToy releases really add a breath of live into the MS.
Had no idea Sega was still making master system games in 1996.

1998 releasing an 8 bit game. That's insainity. Dreamcast was almost out.

Parabéns pelo vídeo irmão .
I didn't know it was region-free. What about the difference between NTSC and PAL?
i am guessing the master system held on longer in brazil due to its being a more affordable option that thew 16 bit systems in a country at the time was not too strong economically.
Right..But the Mega Drive was successful here too..So much so that TecToy also invested heavily on it, its add-ons and games, giving us some gems of exclusives for it too..
Okay, who else bobbing their heads to the 8-bit version of the South Town theme during the Dynamite Headdy segment?
at 1:50, isn't that like poyo?
at 8:58 a specific theme song started playing in my head :p
Someone's gonna get offended by that thumbnail soon or later...
Acredito que o Master System tenha sido mais querido no Brasil que no resto do mundo, prova disso que até hoje é fabricado o console no Brasil.
region free indeed, but make sure you have built in a frequency switch!
Cool. I'd never heard of that Marvel game. Gonna have to try it out. Cheers!
Wow! what great ClickBait.... Putting a sexy master system 2 on the TubeCover👍😀
Ariel: The Little Mermaid should have been in North America, South America (excluding Brazil), Europe, Asia, and Africa/ Oceania!!
I never knew the master system was region free! Makes me wish I had gotten one.

How bout a top ten underrated dreamcast games list and the vids are great
Gunstar Heroes was never released for Master System here in Brazil, that cartridge on ebay was fake.
hey, someone is looking to bsb games?? You could take a look in indie games from here like oddalus an oniken that are tribute to the 8bit era
I've always played these Super cool games at the time

i picked up a preloaded flashcart for the master system just to hopefully get some rare titles like in this very video! 😅
i recommend the mark3 as it does sg-1000 titles and cards as well
SMS
I'm not sure but I believe the Woody Woodpecker game is for Sega Genesis/Megadrive
Approved!
I’m from Brazil. Great Video! But this version of Gunstar Heroes doesn’t exist. It’s a hoax.
Not sure if Ecco SMS was Brazil only, may have been Australasia too
I am here for the master system games
Battletoads in battlemaniacs was available stateside on the SNES
It is available everywhere on the SNES.
You should check out the Last Game Hunter out of Canada.
yeah, bloody yeahhhhhhhhhh
wolverenes power is his healing factor not the claws, calling his claws his power would be like calling a hip replacement a power.....
Do one for GG JP exclusives.
Some of these games where available in the west or japan on the game gear
Indeed I have many of them, I own over 100 Game Gear Games.
Virtua Fighter Animation is better.
You don’t need to repeatedly say “is a video game” or “is exclusive to Brazil”. It’s a video about master system games exclusive to Brazil, we get it.
500th like, yeah boy :)
o jogo do Castelo Rá-Tim-Bum é meio que o Lucas Silva e Silva realizando o sonho dele, de entrar num videogame kkkkk
A bit disappointing to see that most of these games are Master System ports, rather than hidden gems. I'd always go for the better version of a game.
Have to disagree with you on Virtua Fighter Animation. The game is pretty solid and much better than the SMS Street Fighter II.
I was pretty shocked by just how bad the Game Gear/Master System port of Mortal Kombat 3 was when I finally got it. It's far worse than even the Gameboy version!
