Can he overcome his social anxiety around the Justice League? Does this series have My Adventures With Superman vibes? Find out as we discuss the first 3 chapters here on Casually Comics!

Yeah, I was really suprised by the characterization. Clark being a kind of lonely melancholic underneath and dealing with sense of otherness has been part of the character since almost the beginning, but a lot of lesser writers are allergic to him having inner life like that, didn't expect a food manga go all in on it.

    • @JohnQ5
      @JohnQ5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

I love every time storytellers dig deep into Clark's personal thoughts and feelings.
Still think the pinnacles of that are the JAS episode where his idyllic life is that of a simple kryptonian farmer or the Allstar Superman issue where he gets exposed to black kryptonite and we see him not only turn evil but also openly breakdown about his own "mortality" within that story.

The one thing Superman lacks is a circle of non-superhero friends. I mean, like Peter Parker has or like Barry Allen has in the (adorable) Flash CW series. I mean, sure they (the friends) can eventually get powers for the sake of establishing their own independence and not needing to be saved every issue/episode, but a core group of friends BESIDES Lois would make the character of Superman more appealing. Actually, I'm sort of thinking One Punch Man here.

I am a fan of ramen! Especially super-spicy with a softboiled egg in the bowl!
I have been having lots of thoughts lately about how the JLA personalities and interactions should be portrayed. It's really interesting if you think of 'the trinity' as a simple but well-traveled Kansas farmboy dealing with a vengeful wealthy city boy dealing with an exotic evangelical princess from a utopian society, for instance. That seems subtly different to me from the interplay of the iconic sides of their presentations.
Clark would totally get in line for a restaurant, whereas Bruce would have the food delivered and Diana would probably cook for herself rather than be a burden on clearly overworked folk.

Usually when it’s actual Superman the reasons why seem contrived and or nonsensical from a narrative perspective. When it’s a Superman-like figure it works a bit better because the author can play around with the setting and choose where that character diverges. Goku’s story became “what if the Kryptonians were warmongers who were naturally gifted at combat but Superman was raised in earth by nice people.”Omni-man is “what if Superman is some alien envoy preparing earth for an invasion.”

He's literally fuelled by food, so id like seeing a comic where it's just the Flash being a foodie in the middle of a fight by going so fast he's literally at both places at once. It'd be fun seeing him trying to enjoy a meal while simultaneously racing back and forth in a 100th of a second, fighting Dark Seid with the Justice League in Metropolis while also eating a bowl ramen in Tokyo, maybe appearing sometimes with a ramen bowl in hand in the battle or something.

Regarding the chair - Like the color, but the back could be higher and a touch more throne like. Works for the space though.
Oh, and the thirst for this integration of Superman (AND LOIS) is REAL.
You wouldn't think making Clark/Kal blush would be so effective, but apparently it does.
As for tiny short haired Lois, it's insane. I had to ask myself, "was I this openly thirsty when I was a teenager, (or 20 something or 30 something)? And I had to answer "NO. Not even close."
But I do like that they're using versions of the JL that aren't fundamentally jerks (except Hal, that's a universal constant), which is, to my part of why the film adaptations were not as good as they could/should have been. That said, Clark is supposed to be the most socially well adjusted member of the League, so it's a little odd. Most of them have issues with working with a team instead of solo, but I always felt they talked about that and accounted for it in how they did things, so again a little odd, but it works for the story.

#1- Finally we get something that has been left out of superhero comics: what they do when they aren't working or super-ing. It is a nice change of pace.
#2- Are we even sureit is the real Superman, and not just another clone? Where is the pie, huh?
#3- Not one, but two kitties?!? I want to pet them! Give them cuddles for me, please.

I always enjoy your breakdowns of these. This looks super fun and cute.
I really enjoyed your introspection at the end. I wasn't a huge Marvel/DC or comics guy as a kid, really only catching some shows like Teen Titans or X-Men Evolution.
I remember for a long while I didn't enjoy Superman, but my friend who knew more about comics helped me learn about Clark more. I just didnt enjoy those super edgy "god" complex versions of him. It's interesting to watch in Homelander or Omni-man, but havign Superman be so popular and deified just doesn't work for me. Clark Kent was raised a farm boy. He's a journalist and has a life outside of Superman. And while I do think a balance is good, Clark shouldn't lean too far into that Injustice style edge(at least for me). I think that's Bruce's wheelhouse and Clake works so much better as a homegrown hero that stands for peace and hope and is corny and goofy at times. But that's just me.

Be nice to see an episode on the original superman manga. It was an adaptation of a story with the giant key and has Batman in it a fair bit. Ran for numerous volumes but never translated into english as far as i know. A shame.

Keep in mind, like this one they're usually cynical, very corporate-driven cross marketing vehicles, that are out of tune to the mainstream the same way something like Caitlyn jenner Pepsi ad might be considered in USA. The authors are heavily syndicalized and either just young drones pushing out work, or if they were big auteur names in their past, that was an entire generation ago.
However I would never paint them as "not real Japan", the same way every American seems to outright hate the exact society that their own democratic structure incentivizes to crop up.
I would call it Japanicana. I always liked those shows, anime from Hataraki Man to Sakura Quest. Usually the "good" stuff comes from hungry young men taking something made for children like Stan Lee or Osamu Tezuka, and absolutely revolutionalize what they can with the freedom a dark horse gets. That is WHY the comic publisher is called Dark Horse.
