This is the Toyota Corolla hatchback, which was introduced in 2020. The 2021 Toyota Corolla hatchback is a compact car with a 2.0L 4-cylinder engine with 168hp and 151lb.-ft. of torque. The Corolla Hatchback is sold with a manual transmission or CT automatic. The CVT is unique because it has a planetary first gear and then switches to the efficient CVT. In fact, this new Corolla Hatch is the most fuel efficient in this class, rated at 7.5L/100km in the city and 5.8L on the highway. The one featured here is the special edition with Supersonic Red paint, black trim and wheels and fully loaded. The base model of the Toyota Corolla Hatchback comes standard with 8’ touchscreen, 4.2-inch driver display, Apple CarPlay & Android Auto, Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, Standard Smart key with push button start and backup camera, Fabric sports seats, 6-way manual driver seat, LED Daytime running lights, LED headlamps and tail lamps and 15-inch wheels.Direct competitors to the Corolla Hatchback include the Honda Civic, Mazda3, VW Golf, Hyundai Elantra Kia Forte 5 and more. The Toyota Corolla Hatchback is not available with a sunroof and heated seats are not standard.

Why does a hatchback need a sunroof? The backseats didn’t look big, but it didn’t look small either. In my personal opinion, when you consider overall performance, this Corolla Hatchback and the Civic Hatchback are the top two, but the Corolla wins in price.

    Hi Zack and Andrea.
Lucky for you, the Corolla Hatch comes in different engine sizes. Here in South Africa, we only have the 1.2T, with 85kW Power and 185Nm Torque. In two version and only the base gets the option of a manual transmission. Just check, the majority of people though, go for the CVT.
The sedan on the other end come in with a 1.8 naturally asperated engine with 104kW and 171Nm with only a CVT transmission, while the 2.0 which is the top spec sedan comes in manual and automatic, 125kW and 200Nm.
The base level of the 1.8 and 1.2T are basically the same performance and fuel economy. The sedan looks more grown up and the hatch will be more of a sporty look without the sporty feel. Over 10 seconds to 100kph. Both shapes are considered medium sized family car here too.
I find it funny how all countries outside of South Africa will tell you, anything less then 2.0 is a city car. Here with even something with a naturally asperated 1.2 engine will be considered strong enough to do long distances in. I even did a long distance of over 1000km in a 0.8. What the reviews will tell you is, with overtaking you need to think about your next move. That is for most vehicles under 1.4 engine size.
My choice would be the hatch, not because the engine is a 1.2T with 1.8 ability. It is for the convenience of the seats that folds flat, and making the loading capacity of the vehicle like a utility when needed, and giving me the option of always telling my passengers, "You know you can go with, but how you going to get back. I'm going to have large objects in the car." Selfish I know, unfortunately I love driving alone most of the time.
Would be nice to see the bigger engines in the hatch here, and see if it actually makes much of a difference in the performance.
    Love the couples reviews.

Really enjoying your 'couple reviews'; makes me wonder why Zac has ever needed other co-hosts in his TV career when he had Andrea (no disrespect to Zac's past co-hosts who were also brilliant). A couple of suggestions: I wanted to know about the power train early in the video, certainly before talking about the car's performance, but it was mentioned a full 11 minutes into the review which was too long imo. Also, any negatives the car may have, and every car does have negatives, need to be mentioned/emphasized to avoid your reviews sounding like infomercials. For example, other reviewers commented on the hatchback's rougher ride (compared to the sedan), limited sight lines and the road/engine noise but you only touched on the last point. Just my $0.2. Thanks for the entertaining reviews and keep up the good work!

Zack & Andrea always enjoyable videos, one important omission from most car reviewers; no mention of vehicle warranty? I think it should be added in segment ‘for your consideration’ vs competitors vehicles along with their pricing or in the ‘pricing’ segment. When a consumer is buying a new car that is a top 3 consideration, especially with the Korean car makers often surpassing N.A., European & Japanese auto makers with longer & higher Km. Warranties which provide more value. Final point when you review ‘E-Vehicles/Hybrids’ add in warranty for battery life, that should prove very interesting! I drive many cars for my work and leasures and found this car is sporty enough, i hate cvt but this one is ok, is well equiped and drive nice. Space is a little tight but it should not be a surprise if you test drive it and know why you buy this car. The problem is hat with toyota you have what i call the toyota tax to pay if you buy or lease new their price and interest rate are way high. This is the price to pay for quality manufacturing. They also keep their value when used compared to other brand. The refresh look is welcome.

Why did you assume the new transmission makes this car fast? Toyota calls it a "launch gear" but this isn't like launch control on a sports car. It simply lessens the wear & tear on a CVT, which experiences the most stress during acceleration from a standing start. You also get a little more responsiveness using the first gear, but this is not a car you drag race with.

The Corolla Hatch is a great car, and I would certainly always take it over the sedan, if possible. The only criticism I have is that I wish it was a little larger and had a bit more cargo space and better space/packaging efficiency, more along the lines of the VW Golf or the old Toyota Matrix. If you look at the stats of the previous generation VW Golf, for example, it was actually smaller in terms of length than this Corolla Hatch, yet it had a dramatic amount more cargo space.

This corolla definitely breaks the typical design paradigm of yesteryear. But, given it's edgy design, they should of added some performance to it. That aesthetic screams performance hot hatch but the engine wails like typical beige Corolla. Throw a turbo 4 and it will definitely steal some performance enthusiasts from the GTI/R/Civic crowd.

I am looking at picking up a 6MT version of this......thankfully, they offer a 6MT in this, unlike a bunch of other manufacturers who have ditched the manuals. It is between this and the new Civic Hatchback 6MT 1.5T. I don't like the sloped rear of the Civic hatchback (and the loss of space that entails) and wish it were more squared off like the Golf-R.

I actually like the exterior look. Finally, return to a sporty looking Corolla. But like anything pros and cons. Decent price, a tried and true engine which can't die. It's kind of heavy. Rather mid pack in its ratings, tight interior, lack of sunroof. The Yamaha engine option isn't found anymore. With this I say thanks Honda for ur civic hatch. I would remove the chr in Toyota's lineup and bring back a proper matrix.
Maybe in the future a sporty Corolla hatch is in the works? Well at least for now, their direction is changing, which is about time.
Final thought, not a fan of the tacked on radio, Integrated is better.

Toyota sells a much more spacious and practical Corolla wagon in Japan and Europe. We may never get the wagon but I suspect an upgraded version of the new Corolla Cross will come to this market within the next year or so. The Cross is already on sale in parts of Asia in a basic form and it is quite reminiscent of the very popular Matrix. Having said that, you cannot apply too much logic to Toyota's decisions for the Canadian market. After giving us an extra year of Matrix, Venza and Prius v they failed to follow up immediately with another wagon .

Team Motormouth, The next time you bump into Akio Toyoda please ask him how this Corolla hatch sells compared to the beloved #Matrix which preceded it. My estimate would be 20-25%. Toyota's Corolla wagon sold in Japan and Europe would be much more appealing in this market. Zack, thanks for rubbing a little salt into our wounds regarding the GR Yaris which is earning raves across the globe. Down to earth, practical Canadians might well embrace the less glamorous AWD Hybrid Yaris that gets around 70 miles to the Imperial gallon. I have a feeling the only Yaris we will see is the Yaris Cross .

I chose the Corolla HB and I’m very happy. The Civic was an immediate NOPE because of the terrible 1.5L motor. The Mazda3 is out because the cramped interior, worse MPG. The Golf VW due to reliability issues, already had VW and never again.
If I wanted luxury I would go with Lexus or Audi, not the Mazda. If I wanted fast I would get a Mustang GT, or Camaro SS, or Lexus GS, or Audi S. If I wanted space I would get a RAV4. I wanted something nimble, modern, great on MPG without being a Prius, and fun to drive. The Corolla HB does all this. Plenty of power to pass on highway but don’t expect to race or pass insanely quick. Very happy with this car.

The Corolla hatch has a very stiff frame and very good suspension/handling. The Mazda 3 and Civic are the competitors. Mazda 3 is more expensive and the civic looks awful, IMHO.
