I'm watching your videos now because I need to make a project for a class in college, I have 2 things to say.. 1. Well explained videos, love them. 2. Love you, you gave me lots of ideas
HUGE Thx Ohaple im a guy that loves doing all sorts of masks but have none elactric experiance at all so this was a huge help for me :D have been woundering how to install lamps in the mask :) hadent find any good tutorial intill now :) have a great day man !
+alexandra rivera I have worn them both on halloween and could see fine, and wore the borderlands one to comic-con, and was fine there too. Just be sure not to kill your night vision by exposing your eyes to the yellow light.
Ohaple, can you tell me how my night vision would be affected in this situation? Making an Iron Man helmet, and I'd like to use the light up bracelet method you mentioned above, only in BLUE. If I wore a pair of sunglasses in front of the blue light inside of the helmet, would that protect my eyes? There's already a pair of sunglasses to give the eyes a glossy look, but if I actually wore a second pair to protect myself from the immediate blue centimeters from my face, would it be safe (or at least okay-ish)?
You wouldnt need sunglasses, but instead would need lenses that cut out blue light only (like red lenses). You could always sharpie some protective glasses blue, use use lenses from 3D glasses to get the effect.
out of curiosity would you be willing to let me pay you to make a few of these for me? my friends are going to EDC in NYC not too long from now and I don't really have all the time in the world to make this the way I want it. Let me know thanks
Awesome tutorial, dude! I'm gonna use it to create a glow from the filter in front of my mouth on my quarian cosplay mask from Mass Effect, but I'm definitely gonna use it for eyes sometime as well! This really helped a lot
I'm either going to use acrylic sheets (thick of course) or acetate sheets. Maybe I'll need to dye them, but colored ones are available as well, so I think I'll experiment a bit to see what's best. Either way, it -is- quite a complicated mask to make.
Hey there ahaple. just made these for my son using method three but used a chin switch. he opens his mouth and activates the pressure switch. the costume is he Marionette from Five Nights at Freddy's. The best part is the activation. Wait till you have their attention and then boom! light up their brains!. Still haven't figured out how to defeat night blindness though. Maybe some kind of light deflector between the lights and his eyes. I tried making him wear polarized sunglasses but it doesn't make any difference. Fantastic how-to video! Brought back some soldering skills I haven't used for a while. Thanks for posting! :)
I would really love to attempt the third method of wiring leds to a mask. However, within this video my biggest struggle was understanding the wiring. Which wires are positive or negative? Comparing the line diagram to the actual wiring in the mask has me completely lost. I just want a step by step better understanding of how To correctly wire the battery, switch, and potentiometer to to power the LEDs. Help from anyone in the comments is greatly appreciated as well.
you know if you put the lights above the eyes facing down and put some clear reflective material at an angle over the eyes you can have the same effect without the blindness. the light shines down onto the material out the eye holes but the material is clear so you can still see.
This has been incredibly helpful man! I'm working on a Kold War Scorpion mask and am trying to get the glowing orange effect like in the game. I plan on taking orange sunglass or safety lens's, gluing them to the eyes I have cut out, then taking two booklights like you suggested and fitting them in the corners of the mask. I am hoping that this will provide the effect that I am looking for.
Watch tutorials on soldering if you aren't familiar with it. Also, make sure that you don't drive too much power to the LED's, but make sure to give yourself plenty of batteries so that you can leave it on for hours at a time.
Any tips on making sure the wires stay in place/or where the buttons should go so I can turn them on easily? I'm just worried about something going wrong while I'm out and don't have any tools to fix it... I'd like to be able to have it finished by Comic con in Seattle but who knows
rawrikat3 Hot glue is great for keeping wires and stuff in place. I like putting stuff in the cheeks since it is usually out of the way. I used 2 bright white 5mm leds, an spst micro toggle switch, a 10k ohm micro potentiometer, and a AAA battery holder. If you go into hd mode and then make the video large or fullscreen you should be able to read part numbers easily.
Thanks for the help in this video but i was wondering i made a robotic eye with some Window tinting to cover the end will leds work just as well for tint as it does for lenses???
I'm doing a batman helmet and if I do the first method with mesh eyes would it work just as fine ? Like bright up like a normal one look I'm trying to make it wearable so that method works but would it with mesh ?
He pressed it several times for different blinking modes. I noticed that on the red bracelet method, in case you were wondering which one I was explaining here.
I'm new to mask lights, cosplay stuff like that but your good at this! I mean I'm just trying how to put in wire so it'll light up. but still I may make this mask over the TOP cool! Thank You!
Great tutorial, I like the safety warnings, I haven't read all the comments, but the most important safety caution you left out is the fact that bright LEDs are low grade lasers and can permanently damage vision.
Thank you so much for this! I am making a mask in my art class and decided to be the cool one ^^ Also.....I have a problem.....I am stuck between 2 masks......The borderlands one........And ...........Wait no.....I like the borderlands one XD Update: I became a cosplayer and I didnt make it for art class and i no longer use "XD" its been 2 years but ive learned.
For the LED bracelet, is there a way to attach a wire to the power button that you can run down your arm and into a glove, in order to power on/off by hand?
If you do not use the lenses, you will just have a randome led floating in front of your face, which will need to actually poke out of the eye hole to prevent the light hitting your eyes. It isnt needed for the style of the white eyes, but it is needed to make the white spotlight eyes look good.
So I want to use the third method to make some LED red eyes, but I wouldn't need to moderate the brightness since the led's are in hollow spheres above my eyes, having them bright is the design that I'm looking for. I really like the lip switch because my hands are occupied, what changes would I have to do differently from your how-to? what kind of soldering needs to be done?
+NightOfArt The only difference would be that you could use a resistor instead of a potentiometer. We are basically using the pot here as a variable resistor (rheostat). If you calculate out the amount of resistance you need you can do that. Thats the only change really, and whether you use a rheostat or resistor, your soldering will be pretty much the exact same. Only difference is a tiny bit more cost in the potentiometer.
+ohaple okay, thank you for the advice! At this point for how this needs to be wired, I'm doing a hybrid version of your how-to and a diagram I concocted with a friend of mine. I found this really helpful since this is my first time adding lights to a head piece.
So I'm making a brown paper bag mask and I'm using window tint for vehicle's for a black eye effect. What would be the best approach to making them glow yellow. Would I have to remove the window tint or?. I'd appreciate your opinion on my comment I absolutely enjoyed this video
Hi, this may seem like a dumb comment, but if i wanted the light in the second method to be red, how would I go about doing it, would I need different lenses, LED or what? Thanks for the tutorial.
Do you have any Ideas on the best way to make a white color surrounded by red? I'm not sure if I should use a multi colored lens or two different colored led lights,
Idk if anyone will reply to this, but Im going to modify a wolf skull so there is a light for a pupil, like just 1 in each eye. The mask already has screens ove the eye holes. Im wondering if the screen will do quite a bit of bloacking out the light sureing wear or not

Depending on what mask you want, you could make the mask longer and put them in front of your forehead and paint screens the same as the mask so it doesn't mess up any vision.
ohaple how do i make the red leds of the first method stop turning on and off? how to make this all the time on like in the mask you showed? and can I use this in a mask with lenses like a star lord mask?
Im guessing you mean the actual light part? You can make them any size, just use a different flashlight reflector. You could try painting part of the reflector black to make a star or pill shape. I would be careful getting too big though, as it will take up more of your vision
hi i know this was done some time ago but i wanted to know how to make the toggle switch into a tongue one. is it an adapter you buy or was it purpose made
If it's a normal flip switch, then you can just attach a somewhat long piece of plastic to the switch. I haven't done it (yet) for a mouth switch, but you could try attaching a plastic silverware handle, maybe a popsicle stick (ideally with tape around it so you don't get tongue splinters)
Good point about using red light! Any ideas of what you could use in the lens method for people without soldering tools? I don't think red book lights are a thing...
You dont need red if you are doing the lens method, because none of the light should hit your eyes. The reflectors from the book lamps make all the light go out. Red is only important if you are using the first method, or cannot get a good seal on the lenses. :)
Hi can I use the first one I want to put it on a rapter mask but the rapter mask will have plastic canvas mesh on it how will i put the led in????????????
Wanting to make a metallic silver mask with glowing blue LED eyes, but wanting to stick with the easy second method, any ideas where I could find a mask with lenses, or are they manually attached after pushing them out of glasses?
I'm going to make a star lord mask for Dragon con and i was wondering what method you think would be best. I was thinking I could get away with the first method but would 2 or 3 be better?
Glad they worked out! Mine have cracked a tiny bit, but a little paint and a brush (with white glue if needed) can fix it up quickly. I would love if you would send me pics via twitter. :)
This is awesome! I was maybe thinking of doing something like this with a gas mask, that had the eye pieces and everything. Do you think this would work well with the goggle part of that sort of mask?
Question I’m making a robot costume and I want just the eyes to light up and not my face visible for the head only thing is I can’t seem to figure out how to make the lights red look up smoking spaceman toy robot for reference
I have a tip to add for easy wiring to LEDs: Get one of those dollar store bracelets that light up, open it up and take the chip/LEDs out, de-solder the LEDs, get 2 copper wires per side, solder the wires to the board on one end where the LEDs were, and solder the wires to the LED on the other end. No need to increase power, they work great! You can even put everything back in the housing and still use the same switch! Much simpler and faster than creating from scratch!
I wouldnt use it on an airsoft mask. It looks cool, but the chances of it getting you in the eye while being active are much higher. Also, it would reduce visibility too much, making you have a large disadvantage
Im trying to make a Plague Doctor outfit for next year Halloween and I bought a black metallic plague doctor mask from a Halloween store so im new to this whole led thing and im looking for a dim crimson red light for my eyes.
Could I do the light trick with 6 of the LED's? I'm making a mask of custom design and I need to figure out how to do what you did with the second mask...
"It kinda freaks kids out, it's fun." Classy man we have here.
PURPLE GUY CONFIRMED?!?!?
This is so helpful! Thank you for the tutorial!!
Yep. The electronics store in my town has a dozen or so colors. I wanted blue or white, but when with white since it turns out a bit brighter
I'm watching your videos now because I need to make a project for a class in college, I have 2 things to say.. 1. Well explained videos, love them. 2. Love you, you gave me lots of ideas
YES, I CAN BE A PSYCHO OF BORDERLANDS FOR HOLOWEEN
Did you end up being a psycho four years ago?
@@BLDZR 5 now
Let the sauce guide you
HUGE Thx Ohaple im a guy that loves doing all sorts of masks but have none elactric experiance at all so this was a huge help for me :D have been woundering how to install lamps in the mask :) hadent find any good tutorial intill now :) have a great day man !

Would popped out sunglass lenses basically be the same? Because the mask I'm using just has mesh for the eyes. (Doing Sans from Undertale)
Super Tommy I'm doing sans too so good luck with it!
Trojan guy good luck i'm starting to make a Sans one for my cousin as well, it's probably going tibia pain but I feel determined ~ (:
Thank you for this!
Happy to help!
Im happy so many of you awesome vsauce fans made it over here!
You look a bit like Chris Pratt
Thanks!? :)
ohaple Can you comment the supplies list for the third method please?
Yup I agree
i was thinking the same thing! i thought he looked like some kinda actor i knew
Wish Pratt
This will definitely help me a lot. My sis and I are doing a Sans and Papyrus cosplay this January, and I really wanted glowy eyes :)
that's so awesome , I also came here to make a Sans mask ! :)
XxALeXaNexX Cool!
+Wolf and Soda +XxALeXaNexX me too xD
+Wolf and Soda Another future Sans here! (But I'm going with my girlfriend as Temmie hahaha).
Da_Swifta that's awesome xD

Genius! thank-you!!!! This will be great for Steampunk cosplay! the shoelace idea is great too!
this guy just has that wonderful persona that says hed be a good big brother and is great with kids. also hes smart and intuitive
Is their a way to have a wire that goes down your sleeve so I can turn it on with my hand?
you know if you put the lights above the eyes facing down and put some clear reflective material at an angle over the eyes you can have the same effect without the blindness. the light shines down onto the material out the eye holes but the material is clear so you can still see.
I used your LED light idea on my animotion mask and it turned out great - the only issue was keeping the push button attached. Thanks for the tips!
Nice and simple tutorial, just the way I like it.
Glad you enjoyed!
omg! thank you so much! I needed a good option for RED in a mask and this will be perfect! thank you! thank you! thank you!
Book lamp! Great idea! I'm working on a project of making a scary doll puppet and I needed the eyes to light up. This really helped!
@ohaple, I have a mask with a mesh screen on the eyes, would the first method work or what would you suggest?
This was incredibly informative thank you. Will any of the methods help add orange LEDS to a wool federal hat? I want the two indents to glow.
hy +ohaple the frist method will it affect your eyes?
thanks
that borderlands mask is sick. I want one now
he shows you how to make one

Planning on doing a sans cosplay and this was a real help. Thanks!
This was very helpful, im gona try the second method for a start lord mask i should have it done before Halloween
Nice! I thought about him for this year's mask, but it looked like more than I want to tackle. Hope it turns out well
could you tell me more about the led reflectors? Look like there's a socket for the LED? thx. jackie
Does it have to be that specific bracelet or can it be a different brand
So if do this to my mask and use it during the day like walking around at comicon. It's gonna be blinding me?
with the first method is it possible to put it in front of a see through cloth? will it give a better effect while also keeping the ability to see?
Have any tips for a first timer? I'm doing a TV head cosplay and I want to make a little face using LED lights (a .__. face)
Watch tutorials on soldering if you aren't familiar with it. Also, make sure that you don't drive too much power to the LED's, but make sure to give yourself plenty of batteries so that you can leave it on for hours at a time.

ohaple (also what did you use for the last method? the small text isn't showing up very well)
rawrikat3 Hot glue is great for keeping wires and stuff in place. I like putting stuff in the cheeks since it is usually out of the way.

It should still work fine
Tanks for the video, how did you get the bracelet LED's to stop blinking?
Making a Jawa mask and had no idea how to make LEDs for the eyes. I THANK YOU, KIND SIR
Glad to help!
For the second method with the book lamps do you put the lens on the outside of the mask or on the inside and can I just use lens from shades?
I'm doing a batman helmet and if I do the first method with mesh eyes would it work just as fine ? Like bright up like a normal one look I'm trying to make it wearable so that method works but would it with mesh ?
How do you keep the first method from blinking?
the bracelet has different modes the first is flashing the second is solid
+big
He pressed it several times for different blinking modes. I noticed that on the red bracelet method, in case you were wondering which one I was explaining here.

Do the third one Nightvision ?
Sorry for my english im Danish
Thank you so much for this! I am making a mask in my art class and decided to be the cool one ^^ Also.....I have a problem.....I am stuck between 2 masks......The borderlands one........And ...........Wait no.....I like the borderlands one XD
Update: I became a cosplayer and I didnt make it for art class and i no longer use "XD" its been 2 years but ive learned.
the growth 😭
For the LED bracelet, is there a way to attach a wire to the power button that you can run down your arm and into a glove, in order to power on/off by hand?
Not for the "easy" bracelet method. If you follow the more advanced method, it has everything you need, just make the wire a bit longer.
thank you!! using method 3 on my mask soon!
I will try this for Halloween because I'm going to be a black ops 2 origins map zombie with orange eyes
I'm trying to make one that switches from white to red how would I do that?
is it possible to use the first method with black mesh covering the eyes? i want to use a cheaper option but i dont want people to see my eyes
If you do not use the lenses, you will just have a randome led floating in front of your face, which will need to actually poke out of the eye hole to prevent the light hitting your eyes. It isnt needed for the style of the white eyes, but it is needed to make the white spotlight eyes look good.
This was helpful video as I’m doing a custom “redhood meets purge” concept for my Halloween costume this year dope thanks man
So I want to use the third method to make some LED red eyes, but I wouldn't need to moderate the brightness since the led's are in hollow spheres above my eyes, having them bright is the design that I'm looking for. Would te third method work with a mask thay uses mesh eye holes instead of sunglass lenses?
So I'm making a brown paper bag mask and I'm using window tint for vehicle's for a black eye effect. What would be the best approach to making them glow yellow. Would I have to remove the window tint or?. I'd appreciate your opinion on my comment I absolutely enjoyed this video
I have a question I have a Cosplay coming up and I need yellow glowing lights my question is when you have the lights on are you able to see somewhat?
Ally R yup
Hey what's up guys Scarce here.
JAMEYX Films I knew he reminded me of somebody
Hi, this may seem like a dumb comment, but if i wanted the light in the second method to be red, how would I go about doing it, would I need different lenses, LED or what? Thanks for the tutorial.
Do you have any Ideas on the best way to make a white color surrounded by red? I'm not sure if I should use a multi colored lens or two different colored led lights,
I think a multi-colored lens would be the way to go
Cool. I'll post pics when I'm done
Thanks! Looking forward to it
Definitely gonna try to use this for my transformers knock out costume for next year’s Halloween
Idk if anyone will reply to this, but Im going to modify a wolf skull so there is a light for a pupil, like just 1 in each eye. The mask already has screens ove the eye holes. Im wondering if the screen will do quite a bit of bloacking out the light sureing wear or not
Thank you so much, I hope you are all well!
Question how do you recommend on like making a helmet glow like in the smash bros trailer for megaman. also would this method work by modifying the led to make a contact lens glow?
Depending on what mask you want, you could make the mask longer and put them in front of your forehead and paint screens the same as the mask so it doesn't mess up any vision.
ohaple how do i make the red leds of the first method stop turning on and off? how to make this all the time on like in the mask you showed? and can I use this in a mask with lenses like a star lord mask?
Im guessing you mean the actual light part? You can make them any size, just use a different flashlight reflector. You could try painting part of the reflector black to make a star or pill shape. I would be careful getting too big though, as it will take up more of your vision
is there anyway I could use a yellow led with the the last two? So no lenses could help with them???
hi i know this was done some time ago but i wanted to know how to make the toggle switch into a tongue one. is it an adapter you buy or was it purpose made
If it's a normal flip switch, then you can just attach a somewhat long piece of plastic to the switch. I haven't done it (yet) for a mouth switch, but you could try attaching a plastic silverware handle, maybe a popsicle stick (ideally with tape around it so you don't get tongue splinters)
cool, thanks for getting back to me
Does the bracelet work as well as the shoe lace thing?
Good point about using red light! Any ideas of what you could use in the lens method for people without soldering tools? I don't think red book lights are a thing...
You dont need red if you are doing the lens method, because none of the light should hit your eyes. The reflectors from the book lamps make all the light go out. Red is only important if you are using the first method, or cannot get a good seal on the lenses. :)
Would it be possible to use basic tape in place of the glue? Or maybe more basic glue in place of what you used if glue is ABSOLUTELY necessary?
Hi can I use the first one I want to put it on a rapter mask but the rapter mask will have plastic canvas mesh on it how will i put the led in????????????
Wanting to make a metallic silver mask with glowing blue LED eyes, but wanting to stick with the easy second method, any ideas where I could find a mask with lenses, or are they manually attached after pushing them out of glasses?
Have you seen a version of led that would be ok for con use? That's my main place I'd be using it, and I'd like to not run into people or tables. Lo?
Love the tutorial! Is there any way to stop the flashing of the lights in the first method?
what store did you find the led bracelet at? I have checked dollar tree and dollar general, need for a current cosplay! thank you!
i like the borderlands mask because you could look at somebody then turn the light on then run at them
I'm going to make a star lord mask for Dragon con and i was wondering what method you think would be best. I was thinking I could get away with the first method but would 2 or 3 be better?
The first method might be better since starlord mask is red eyes I think. Good luck, let me know how it turns out!
I'm going to try to do Wybie's mask from Coraline so I'll probably do any of these methods :3
The videos you've posters helped me out a lot but I've made two masks and the have both cracked but I'd still like to send you pictures of them
Glad they worked out! Mine have cracked a tiny bit, but a little paint and a brush (with white glue if needed) can fix it up quickly. I would love if you would send me pics via twitter. :)
Could you do the third method on a paint ball mask or a pair of sunglasses?
Man these masks are so cool. Wish I had the skill and patience to make them.
This is awesome! I was maybe thinking of doing something like this with a gas mask, that had the eye pieces and everything. Do you think this would work well with the goggle part of that sort of mask?
by wearing reflective sunglasses under the mask first method give a nice effect
Will the first (easy) method work for a cyclops visor? Just for a simple glowing effect so it looks like the visor is "blasting"?
hey can you use a AAA battery holder instead of the AA battery holder?
For the first method, when you wear the mask does the light still flicker rapidly like that? Or is it unnoticeable from the inside of the mask?
The first method has 3 options, slow blink, fast blink, and solid light. you can see it solid on at 4:30
Thanks for the info. I'll be recommending your channel for sure.
Question I’m making a robot costume and I want just the eyes to light up and not my face visible for the head only thing is I can’t seem to figure out how to make the lights red look up smoking spaceman toy robot for reference
Would it work if I used the first method with lenses
hey bro i cant find those led book lamps.. can you show me some link to buy them or something? thanks!
This is my favorite video from you cause this mask is from my favorite video game tales from the border lands
I have a tip to add for easy wiring to LEDs:
Get one of those dollar store bracelets that light up, open it up and take the chip/LEDs out, de-solder the LEDs, get 2 copper wires per side, solder the wires to the board on one end where the LEDs were, and solder the wires to the LED on the other end. No need to increase power, they work great! You can even put everything back in the housing and still use the same switch! Much simpler and faster than creating from scratch!
Just wondering, would the 2nd method of glowing pupils be safe for airsoft masks? I don't wanna go around with something that may not be very safe.
I wouldnt use it on an airsoft mask. It looks cool, but the chances of it getting you in the eye while being active are much higher. Also, it would reduce visibility too much, making you have a large disadvantage
Thanks mate!!
What brand is that LED wristband? I keep looking for one, but I can't find it.
So is the micro potentiometer required?
can you use different color leds? im trying to make a mask that looks like my profile pic
