I've never gotten to try dragon fruit. I want all those pieces you just toss in the trash! They are expensive in the grocery stores. Thanks for the good variety you reviewed for us. Now I know to buy red if I ever get my husband to buy me one.

Thumbs up to you! The flesh colours are amazing . I wonder how you got all the different types for this video ? Did you eat them all by yourself 😂😂😂😂? In Malaysia we get just the dark purple pinkish and white flesh Dragon fruits. Dragon fruit overall has plenty of nutrients and vitamins. It maybe tasteless but I enjoy eating them .
We have over 100 varieties so at any given point of the fruiting season we may experience 20 to 30 different varieties of fruit during the same period. When doing a tasing, I only eat small pieces of fruit and still that may be too much.

That tends to happen with abundance
Nothing was thrown away, We had a trash can and a bowl, peelings went in the trash and excess fruit went in a bowl for juicing later.

Hi, I have eaten the yellow variety, it's very sweet and it became in one of my favorites. Also a few days ago, I tried the red fleshed dragon fruit I don't really know if it was the 'Hylocereus Costaricencis' maybe it was one of its varieties, but it was sweet and very tasty. Please, which of the varieties on the video you recommend me? is the Physical Graffiti variety so good? is this the best dragon fruit of all pink color? Sorry for bad english.
Physical Graffiti is very well liked by a lot of Dragon Fruit growers. Including myself, you should definitely have that in your collection. 👍🏼

It peels extremely easily. You don't even need a knife.
I’ve heard there’s a pink flesh one that shows hints of strawberry, pear and banana flavours to it. What name would you say that one was as your description of tastes weren’t very visionary other than sweet earthy bitterness
Wow, that's a lot of hints of flavor. I do not know of any Fruit that is that complex nor have I ever tried anything that tastes like banana. There are only a few pink varieties out there so it should be easy to track down. Overall, Dragon Fruit is a mild tasting fruit and I find often over exaggerated when some explain the taste profile.
Well I can only go by what the person that sold us the plant told us after we bought it. They claimed it was a rare pink variety and that the fruit had those hints of flavours
We originally thought we were buying just a red variety but as I was leaving with the plant that’s what i was told..
So I’m kinda hoping I don’t have to wait to long before we get some fruit from it to check out their claims.
Prior to buying the plant we only knew of 2 different types red and white. My wife like the red and I prefer the white
So I bought the red plant for her. Then as I was leaving the seller made that claim which c aught me by surprise for a couple of reasons. One didn’t know about other colour varieties. Two what benefit would they have making the claim I was already walking out the door with it and they had their money.
So I started to do research when I got home and came across this video which shocked me at how many different ones there is so it got me thinking maybe there might be some truth in what they told me
Time will tell once I can get the plant to fruit.

Thank you for this video. Very interesting. Could you please talk about how to know when the dragon fruit that you buy at the grocery store is ready to eat? At least bananas start to get spots to let you know they are ripe.
My experience of store fruit is awful. Fruit is cut early, not getting all of the sugars it would normally get at home becuse you can leave it on the vine until it's ready to eat. Then time transported and sitting on the shelf. Lastly, they ask $5 to $10 per pound for bland fruit. It's much better when you grow it yourself.
My experience of store purchased varieties have not been good. The fruit looks like it has been cut for weeks by the time it makes it to the shelf. Also, the varieties sold are not sweet. Combine these two experiences and you end up with unpleasant expensive fruit.
Have you tasted American Beauty? I hear that variety is better than Physical Graffiti. What are your thoughts on AB?
+amantedelenguaje2 Yes I have. In fact American Beauty was one of my first Dragon Fruit plants. American Beauty is extremely difficult to fruit in my area. If grows very well, just does not produce the fruit like the other purple flesh. It also take a year or so longer to produce fruit. But when it does, it produces a nice sweet fruit. What I like about Physical Graffiti is it have sweet and flavor.
Spicy Exotics Thanks for the feedback! I have both Physical Graffiti & American Beauty. My PG plant is near 2 years old and huge. I hope to get it to fruit here in N.C. in 2016. My AB plant is 4 months old and has a long way to go before fruiting.

how do they came up with different types of varieties with the same fruit??? is it natural, or it's had been done by science people??? also, how do seedless or none seeds fruits came from and the color same type of fruit but different varieties too???
Dragon Fruit is from the genus Hylocereus. Under this genus they have several species. These species can cross and hybrids are created. This can take place my nature or by man.
Spicy Exotics so what you are trying to said is the dragon fruit with different colors are made from crossing, and they aren’t from the natural plant right??? That is what I want to know???

Spicy Exotics yeah because I am a plant and fruit learner, and I want to identify which fruit is man made and which one is natural...... I always confused why one type of fruit has so many varieties, with different colors, seedless or none seedless. I wonder if they came from the same mother plant
what kind of variety can be use to cross pollinate for both Hylocereus Costaricensis, and Physical Graffiti? I'm very interested in these two varieties, but don't have much space to plant a lot varieties for cross pollinate. thanks
+Shun Jiang Most Hylocereus Polyrhizus will do the trick. The best results have been with Voodoo Child and Natural Mystic mainly because of it's prolific blooms.
I've only ever tried a white one, but it was pretty tasteless - how come? I tried to test the ripeness before eating by feeling it, and it had a slight give, so it should have been ripe.
Mia Silva I have tried white and red dragon fruit. The white one doesn't taste that sweet. The red ones is really sweet.
The riper they ar the sweeter they are.
I tried one with deep red flesh. The import sticker on it said Vietnam. I thought it was ripe as the skin gave in a bit when pressed but it ended up being totally tasteless. Ate it anyway for the nutrients in it. How do you know when it is ripe?

@@Spicyexotics thank you so much. I tried store bought ecuador (palora I guess..), It was just sweet. I was little disappointed that it didn't have any flavor... Can you also please recommend one white fleshed and one pink fleshed that are self pollinating?

Some white varieties have a sour taste, some have a sweet taste, and some have no taste at all.

I do not use any fertilizer
Try chicken manure from Walmart or HomeDepot, it's good for dragon fruit plant and chili plants
How come you didn't include the yellow Selenicereus megalanthus variety? I hear it's the best tasting one.
The fruit is extremely difficult to grow in my area and the fruit takes 9 months to mature. Because of this, it does not fruit with the other varieties. You are correct, it is a great tasting fruit.

A friend gave me a white one and a red one last week. I just tried half of each. No good at all, lack of taste, and i had to spit out all the seeds and ended up almost nothing to eat. But they both looked very exotic before and after i cut them. I prefer the apple anytime.
90% of whites taste the same and some red flesh are bland with an earthy aftertaste. Not my favorite. Do yourself a favor and try a purple or pink flesh. Noice sweetness to acidity ratio.
Can I foliar feed my dragon fruit plant
You sure can, however, my plants are healthy and produce nicely with just compost and rainwater. It may not be necessary where you live.
How often do you use compost
Once late winter just before spring approaches. For me, temperatures are just entering the 70s all day. Wherever you are located, when your temperatures reach 70s all day, perform a compost top dress.

Spicy Exotics i have. But it seems like everyone who is growing dragon fruit has their own opinion on each variety. Based on the taste ratings on your website on some of the varieties that im interested in they are very sweet. But others say they have a hint of sour/tangy tase to them.
Some are sweet and some are sour. It is a personal preference. I think you can't go wrong with any purple flesh. They have a nice sweet to acidity balance.

@@Jeremiah-TwistedTrucker White flesh are $5 per pound, Red flesh are $8 per pound, Purple and Pink flesh are $10 per pound. Rare varieties sell per fruit based on size (usually $10 to $15 per fruit)

Ruptured Fruits and Vegetables, melons included, are related to the rain and watering. If it has been dryer or less water, then a rain comes or you water extra, the plant will force the water to the fruit, the skin will tear, rupture or fracture. In melons it can be quite dramatic. When they rupture, it can be with enough force to almost explode the melon.Flavor variations, can be the type of fruit or vegetable, and the Soil it is grown in, the various mix of minerals, elements, chemicals and nutrients in the soil will affect the taste, size, and appearance.

How to tell between white and pink ones?

The white ones have very little flavor. The colored ones have more, but some have much more than others... Dark Star is my favorite. Lots of flavor, some call it grape but I would describe it more like blackberry.

Not sure how you get earthy taste in most of your dragon fruit. Obviously a review by someone who lacks enthusiasm with dragon fruits.
