Spot on with hammocks. The more people out in tents, the better the tree selection for me. Plus I can skip all of your tips that apply to keeping a tent clean, or level, or usable. It also lets me skip all of the videos about what pad is better this week.
As for batteries in a headlamp....I use waterproof headlamps with rechargeable batteries, and keep mine accessible. I don't want to be digging around and trying to find batteries at dusk and trying to put the batteries in after dark. Then again, I tend to use mine while hiking in the dark, not just for camp chores or finding a tree.

If the head lamp has three batteries I always just flip one backwards until I use it and then I don't lose the batteries

Wait. Who rolls up the tent without first folding it over so the top sides touch (think hotdog bun or taco) That way only the bottom side touches the bottom side. Folding it his way ensures you'll get it dirty since you're flipping it upside down onto the mud

As a hammocker, I have zero issues with mud. I just use a rag to wipe dew off of my tarp and I’m good. Setting up in the rain is fine because after I have the tarp, I’m dry, and my things too. No getting the tent wet with my clothes or muddy shoes. And even when bivvy camping I have brought a hammock for a midday cooling nap.

Don't fold the tent groundsheet to groundsheet, go the other way.
That way you can still fold then roll when it's on the ground, and allows you to wipe off most mud and dirt as you go.
If you fold in the left and right sides into the middle, you're keeping dirt to dirt and wrapping up the inner inside the burrito wrap.

One of the biggest concerns about leaving batteries(alkaline batteries) in your electronics, is you take a chance of the battery acid leaking into your (in this case headlamp) and destroying it. Now you have a paper weight headlamp.

Footprint and groundcloth are great at containing dirt to no-essential gear!
Both are easily set on bushes or on the clothesline to dry as well as time permits (or rinsed by the rain) then be brushed cleanish (I carry a very light brush, but a branch can be used).
But, yeah, sometimes you need to break camp now. However, folding can go either way: dirty-dirty, or clean-clean!

Great video Bryce. I'm going to pre-blame you for my upcoming virgin tarp camping trip in the sierra. You were almost the entire inspiration...from a while back. I appreciate your perspective on these things. The freezer bag for me is the ONLY way to go - all your "crap" should be in a single half filled gallon freezer bag - if it doesn't fit you have too much stuff. Excluding bug juice, compass, and toilet kit (in my hip belt pockets) everything fits in about a third, gets rolled and put in the only zipper pocket I have. makes the world so much simpler.
I'll be alert to the well worn camp sites with the tarp. It'll be weird but I'm hoping its just more fun to tinker with the tarp.
and finally regarding the dirty tent pack up - if you're fortunate enough to have a dyneema tent theres nothing wrong with laying it out on the stream or lake to wash it off - its already wet...at least it wont be wet and abrasive.
    Cheers all

Ha ha ha. I always enjoy your snarky videos. Well, we'll call it fake snarky.
Anyway, your points are well-founded (except for the anti- hammock rhetoric...grrr).
I especially would like to add something regarding setting up your shelter NOT on bare ground. I am a tarp guy (go ahead, make jokes...I don't care)...so I have NO floor in my shelter. (BUG MESH...what the heck is THAT ?) I use a 4 x 9 ft. sheet of poly as a "standard" ground sheet...and I ALWAYS endeavour to set up my shelter on top of a pile of leaves. After putting up my tarp, I crawl inside and make myself a nice, comfy sleeping platform out of the leaves, THEN put down my ground sheet. Makes for a much more comfy sleeping spot. Warmer, too.
Oh...and one more thing. My headlamp does not have a removable battery (it is USB chargeable)...gee, you're STILL using disposable batteries ?? How primitive... 😊
Anyway, my lamp has a "lock" mode - and I ALWAYS use it. I highly recommend this ...for the same reason as your battery removal tip.

    • @seaotter52
      @seaotter52 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Common sense is just another way to describe experience. That's why noobs don't have "common sense".. no experience. That experience can be gained personally or taught from the group. Learning from others avoids the potential risks of self learning but has the potential to continue outdated or incorrect ideas if the community doing the teaching isn't updating. Sometimes you just don't know what you don't know

      @seaotter52 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@jacobpoucher That's one possibility, but how about not touching a hot stove? "Common sense" says to not touch.. How did you learn that. Experience, frequently after being warned not to. Two ways to gain experience. In person or being taught. Even critical thinking has to be learned. So regarding the new generation needing to be spoon fed. That is why we have coaches and instructors. Guess pro footballers need to be spoon fed because running a route is common sense. Guess we can let little Suzy and Jimmy run free in the street because common sense says to check both ways. If it was a common human trait it would not have be taught. Has to be trained. Even the stuff in this video. Now how well someone uses this is a continuum, similar to any other activity. Running. Olympic fast to sloth slow. Jumping, singing, painting etc etc etc.
Also, older people tend to think the younger generations are way worse than in reality. I get a kick out of reading the complaints of the older folks complaining about the kids. Goes back thousands of years. Nothing changes. I think these young people are, for the most part, superb.

I pack my tent fly where I can get to it quickly, sperate from the tent. It becomes my emergency shelter in a sudden downpour, or a wind break on a cold day. Your head becomes the center pole. Why travel alone travel with a friends or family. A rain fly makes a warm dry gathering place for the group. Zipp lock bags are handy, but soon become trash. I use Stacher bags, Yes they are expensive, but they are sturdy, see through, seal shut and are waterproof and made from silicone (the stuff glass is made from) Or cook in them. All my gear is in color coded stuff bags or cubes. I know in the dark color code does not work. Think of them as your dresser drawers Stack them in your tent and you are ready for bed and getting ready in the morning. Pillows are redundant if you carry your clothes in a cube. Carry an envelope shaped stuff bag insert the clothes cube wrapped inside your down puffer or vest for an instant pillow that won't go flat overnight. I'm now carrying a micro towel that is 2 feet wide and 5 feet long. Sounds crazy but serves many uses. other than bathing. Think outside the box and come up with five ways you can use it on the trail, on a bike tour, in the tent in an emergency. If you can't then keep using a small towel. Whatever works for you .

You are a perfect spokes person for Mint mobile!
While I do appreciate the humor. I actually learned more about Mint than I have on TV commercials.
… and that hammocks suck, I guess.

HydroBlu has built-in caps on both ends (as well as threads on both ends), so no baggie needed. No blue thread-adapter needed either. No syringe, no sport-cap needed either. Basically everything is built-in with HydroBlu, there are no loose parts to lose. 2) Nitecore headlamps have a lockout-mode to prevent accidental turn-on. Batteries are so Second-Millenia anyway.

On tip #3, as you're saying that folding it keeps the dirt off the bug net, you literally drop the bug net in the dirt?! I have always folded it lengthwise with the inner bug net on the inside, floor on the outside, keeping the dirt on the outside of the bundle and out of the interior. I couldn't care less if my stuff sack gets a little dirty. Then, as I'm rolling it up, I brush dirt and debris off of the tent floor.
Another tip: if you're using a freestanding tent, before you break it down, open a door on the inner and hold it in the air sideways, shaking any dirt and debris out before you fold it up.

I finally figured out the ditty bag - I call it a "kit" bag because "ditty" just sounds silly - "trick" at Philmont this year. I was the slowest of our crew to pack up in the AM until realized all those items could just be stowed in my fold up day pack inside my main pack.

"Ditty bag" is an old navel term. Sailors would keep their sail needles and palmers in them.

Fold the tent in halves then thirds
    Then roll
This way the wet outside is always folded on itself
    The inner never gets wet

I’m super confused about your tent folding technique.. you said fold it bottom to bottom so the net never touch’s the dirt.. but then immediately lay the net in the dirt.. was that a mistake? I normally fold inside to inside to keep it from touching the dirt.

Well about that one tip where you recommend folding your fly/innertent in half with the wet side inside, I don't agree that's the best way to go honestly. Also, laying it down on the ground like you showed in the video, kind of defeats the purpose if that ground is wet and muddy....... You want the inside to stay dry and clean right? So fold it exactly the other way!! The outside tent will probably be wet on all sides too so folding it groundside/dirty side outside is always gonna be preferable if you pack them together, otherwise the wet outer tent will make the inside of the inner fly wet. Sorry I don't now the right names for the components of tents in english

Headlamp: instead of removing a battery and having one more thing to keep track of and possibly lose, and then have to find it again in the dark. Because its dark and thats when you are going to need it... just turn one of the batteries upside down. my headlamp has 3 batteries. all i have to do is open it up, flip over the middle battery, and bobs your uncle. Mine too.
Cutting board. This is how I can tell if someone has lived in the woods or not. No matter what their gear looks like, if they don't have a cutting board I'm going to be skeptical. The weight is negligible, carbon neutral, low fat, non dairy, steroid free, gluten free, free range, and free free if you have a plastic notebook cover.

Never, ever fold your tents. The constant creasing in the same place will cause a leak. Like folding a piece of paper in the same place over and over. Also the structure that is created by folding a piece of material over itself makes it harder to compress. Get a set of compression sacks, shove the stuff in and compress it down
