  • And here are some details around my new anamorphosis oéf Rahmi M. Koç
I used 913 objects to create the installation, all of them were supplied to me by the Rahmi M. Koç Museum Istanbul He considers time to be the most valuable commodity and, in the words of his friends, he manages it accordingly. As a result, he created spectacular collections during his life. I chose various alarm clocks and watches to depict part of his face. The large clock is askew above his work desk as if it’s flying, symbolizing that “time flies”. To represent his business background, this whole wall is papered with his accounting records, because, as Henry Ford famously said, “time is money." Indeed, Rahmi M. Koç was so inspired by Henry Ford that he established his own museum in Turkey after visiting the Henry Ford Museum in Michigan.
He is also a passionate seafarer. At the age of 76, he completed a cruise around the world, that was documented extensively in a book that’s also a part of the installation. In the center of his forehead, I installed a helm with which he steers not only his ship on the cruise around the world, but also his life story and his company, keeping many of his loved ones afloat. There are dozens of ships in the installation, they’re used alongside little cars and railroad tracks to model his eye expression. His head is full of them, and several are even floating in his suit. Red carnations are sticking out of one of them, because he always dresses stylishly and in a cultivated manner. His pants, however, are casually thrown over the chair at his work desk. Fishing nets, lamps, bells, fish, swans, and bird wings all enliven this harbor.
Travel suitcases accompany him on all his collector journeys across the world, while typewriters and telephones provide means of communication. A cat lies in his left supraorbital foramen, next to a file cabinet full of documents. Radio receivers and books are scattered around the table and on the floor because information is the basis of education. A shirt is thrown over his ear and a tie is made from little trains to symbolize another passion of his, and a shirt is made from little cars. There are thousands of them in the Museum, ranging from miniature models to life-size replicas. In addition to trains, cars, and airplanes, there’s even one submarine.
Rahmi M. Koç also draws his models, and his drawings are included in the installation. They’re in the bottom left, with a big steamboat sailing on top of them. He always documents his journeys, so the installation includes many cameras, along with their parts. Detailed, functioning models of steam engines made from copper and brass make up his hair and suit, symbolizing his attention to detail. In the rear left part, there is a graphic representation of his family’s genealogy, which I depicted as a train depot in the harbor. There’s a captain’s hat and baseball caps of the clubs he supports, or which support him. There’s a treasure chest. The remaining areas are wallpapered with newspaper articles reporting his successes, and with technical drawings of ships, cars, and trains.
I was informed that Rahmi M. Koç is not only a collector of museum objects but also of people, in the best sense of the word. He managed to create a team without whom all of this would have been impossible. I also asked his loved ones to donate something from their personal lives to the installation, since who we are is largely formed by those we’re surrounded by. A collector created from the collections exhibited in his own museum, and his story.
He is like me. Whole his life he is like a small boy, who wants to play all the time with the objects, get some knowledge about the world and creating him
