  • As I said in the video, this isn't a technique that I discovered on my own, I found all of the information in various places and pieced it all together in one easy video.

    This made me buy an OP-1. I barely have any musical experience and I have heard it's not the best for beginner but something about this little device really speaks to me.

      I relate to this a lot! I would love to know if you're happy with your purchase, as I'm thinking about purchasing one as well and have no musical experience either. (I'm mostly interested in creating ambient stuff on it.) Thank you!

      I can only speak for myself, but I have some experience in music (since I have played guitar for 25 years), but just recently got interested in electronic music and bought this synth. There is something inspiring about it I cannot fully explain. It is NOT the one tape or other disantvantages that forces you to be creative. I think it is just plain fun and an extraordinary workflow.
      I can really recommend it and I am contemplating getting a field in some time.@@rrricardo5906

    Something that I’ve found interesting is using the tombola with a slow roll to kind of randomize notes. I try to lighten the gravity a bit also so it’s more subtle

    This is a mindbender of a synth. Sometimes it seems too simple and limited. Sometimes I'm shocked by how people use it and so many hidden tricks. It's an incredibly versatile little synth that keeps surprising me, just different from how I usually think or my usual process..so requires some adaptation by the user. At one time I thought I'd sell mine. But through using it and adapting to it...I don't think I ever will.

    • @bwest6275
      @bwest6275 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      agreed. it is such a deep synth, and full of wonderful surprises in exploration. and possibly a future classic due to it's unique character.

    • @HotStrange
      @HotStrange 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed. I hate when people say it’s too limited because to me, it’s the opposite. There are so many little tricks and things you can do that it’s almost overwhelming. Amazing instrument.

    Great tutorial - how does it work with looping the pads for you? I always get a click-sound when the loop starts over - I don't think they've solved that issue yet ..

    • @thankyoumisterspell

    Hey what's going on with the milliseconds in the tape time? It's like 3 01,3 02... 3 25 (about that) then 4 0... Why doesn't it go up to 99 like a normal clock?

      Don’t normal clocks go to 59? Like 9:59:59 is one second before 10:00:00 but I get your point, I’m Almost sure it’s a measure count

      Within the machine itself! OP-1 has a built-in four-track tape recorder

    was wondering,would this be a good synth for someone who isn't musical at all (me) but would love to be able to make some music of my own? i really like the idea of being able to play this anywhere. is it easy to get to grips with would you say. thanks.

    • @thankyoumisterspell
      @thankyoumisterspell  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +racefaceec90 It's definitely one of my favorite instruments. It has a steep learning curve but once you know how to use it it will unlock a lot of creativity. That being said, there are much more affordable options out there if you're just starting out

    • @Antoinethecool
      @Antoinethecool 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      what would you recommend?

    • @thankyoumisterspell
      @thankyoumisterspell  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The new Roland line of boutique synths looks awesome, that wouldn't be a bad place to start. Perhaps learning with some software would be good and then moving on to hardware once you get a sense of how things should work and what you're looking for in a synth. Certain synths do things better than others

    Why not play it one octave down, if you've already set a tempo? Instead of slowing the tape down, I mean. So close to pulling the trigger on this..

    • @thankyoumisterspell
      @thankyoumisterspell  8 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      +bitspacemusic That could also work but slowing it down gives it a different feel. It slows down the texture of the sound to give it a more interesting vibe

      if you're still interested 10 months on, op1 synth patches are just files that tell the op1 what settings to use, the vocal thing is just some weird sound TE built into the patch files for when you play them on a computer
