    This is awesome! How are you recording directly from the Op-1 into your computer? I tried using an aux-1/4” cable, and there’s always hissing in the background

      I used an aux cable for this video, if I recall correctly. you can export wav files through USB, and you might be able to do audio over USB as well (I can't remember for sure)

    I really liked this format. It's really neat to watch you put tracks together. Out of curiousity, how much have you studied music theory? Also, where would be a good place to learn? TH-cam, library, classes, online?

    • @GabeMillerMusic
      @GabeMillerMusic  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Jack Worraps Thanks!
      I had a pretty random music theory education... My dad taught me a bunch of the initial stuff, then I picked up a bunch of bits and pieces from TH-cam and blogs.
      Udemy has a pretty good course on music theory for electronic musicians. Depending on where you're at, it could be useful. Guys like Adam Neely are great too.
      But yeah, I know a decent bit of music theory at this point, but I still have some weird gaps in my knowledge, like modes and sight reading.

      Gabe Miller Music Thank you very much! I'm planning on really getting into music theory itself. I can play guitar decently well, but I learn from tabs, and can improvise decently. I CAN read music, just not as well as I would like to. So just some general music theory I would find super useful. I really appreciate the help. And your videos are fun to watch, since I look at them and think, "How can I do something similar with my guitar loops?" So keep it up, like usual, man. Looking forward to more!

      hey Jack worraps,
      i ran into the same issue as you, and i found some helpful videos. here is the link to the one that REALLY helped me understand better. this is a good channel for help, has a varriety of things to learn. highly reconmend checking them out! th-cam.com/video/4GIfRazbZh8/w-d-xo.html

      actually yes. im just starting out, i first made my own nightcore(if you dont know what that is, it is making a song a higher pitch and tempo) now i going into electronic. i use FL studios free version, and i think my music sucks lol. i currently only have one full song, with a preview on my other channel(made for nightcore specifically) hopefully with school being over i can get more up( and hopefully it will be better)

    Do you mind sharing a bit more on your process of mastering? Do you export the tapes into a DAW?

    • @GabeMillerMusic
      @GabeMillerMusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yeah, I export the tape tracks into Logic and arrange/mix them there. When building a track on the OP-1, I try to keep as many elements on separate tracks as possible so I have lots of control over the balance and tone of stuff while mixing. Mixing usually consists of volumes, EQ, a bit of compression, ducking if needed, and some filter automation. The mastering on stuff like this is pretty simple, usually just OTT at like 10% and a limiter.

    How to do fast hi hats or note repeat on OP1?

    • @stecurran78
      @stecurran78 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could program the endless sequencer to play just 4 hi hat triggers and turn the beat segments right up 1/32.
      You could do a layer of hi hats at 1/8 over your beat track. Then turn it up to 1/32 and do another pass and try punch in some short 1/32nds in places for a bit more of a groove. Mess around with other tempos or apply some 'swing' to get some unusual fills.
      If 1/32 is not fast enough you could mess around with the song tempo in the BPM to get it faster (change BPM from 90 to 180) but you might need to "disconnect" the BPM from the tape speed.
      This is only 1 possible way. There are many possibilities. Hope this gives inspiration.

    hey Gabe!
    I'm a new girl to the scene of music making, trying to figure out all of the stuff. I'm doing ok on music theory and what sounds good with what, but I've ran into a problem. i use the free version of FL studio and know how it works. when i start making a track from an idea i got, i try finding the sounds. the problem is i don't know how to stick with an idea that is good, without getting off of the track. i also cant seem to really find the right sounds, which is important for making your own tracks. do you have any tips maybe? thanks! (p.s my music sucks... so ifanyone listens be prepaired to hate it)

      If getting off track helps you come up with new sections for the song, or new song ideas, I'd go for it. Just do a save-as and keep working. But once you have a bunch of ideas, I'd commit to finishing at least one of them. What might help is realizing that, when it comes to learning, finishing a song is just as important as starting one. Seeing the whole process through makes you much better at every aspect of making a song.
      You could also try scheduling your production time, so maybe you devote half of it to just playing around with various ideas, then the other half to finishing whatever song you've committed to.
      For finding sounds, some of that can come down to finding the right preset pack. I don't know how many there are for FL synths, but I'm sure there are some good ones out there.
      It can also come down to layering. I can often take a sound that's in the ballpark of what I need, then modify it until it sounds like what I actually need. I do a lot of stuff on layering in my making-of videos.
      And it also might be worth learning some sound design. I made a playlist of a bunch of videos that will give you an introduction to sound design, and I'm going to be doing a full video on sound design in the future.

      thank you so much! this is really helpful. i love layering, i might do it to much tbh! and i noticed when i try making tracks, i always end up making the notes to low, and cant seem to get it a little higher, but still have the climax to the sounds. with all this aside, do you have any videos you can recommend for help?

    • @GabeMillerMusic
      @GabeMillerMusic  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't have anything for that specifically, but I do think my making of videos are worth a binge. And that's not just because they're mine, but because I do talk a lot about how to make powerful drops and layer effectively.
      I know KSHMR did a video on making powerful drops as well, that might be worth a look.
      A quick listen to your first song tells me that you could benefit from learning some EQ as well. That will help you with getting frequencies to play well together. Sidechain compression (or ducking) will also help with your drops.
      And one more thing to keep in mind... When making a drop, you need to decide on a central element. The thing that takes up most of your attention, and everything else is there to support it. So, in a big festival-style prog house track, it would be the lead. In dubstep, it's the bass growls. Everything else is built around those elements. So, try to think in those terms, and it might help.

    Gabe... Any chance you might know a shop that has OP-1s in stock right now? I ordered one from guitar center in early May, supposedly to ship on May 18. As of today my order just shows "backordered" with no ETA. I can't find any place that has these in stock, driving me crazy!

      I got mine used on Reverb.com. I got lucky, because I imagine they tend to go pretty fast, but that's worth a look.
