  • Can I run a sub 18 minute 5k? I'd had a sneaking suspicion for some time now that my legs may have it in them to break the 18 minute barrier. 18:18 was set in 2016 and i've been in the right shape on numerous occasions to have a go but never have. Well, there's no better time than now.... so of I toddled to Paddock Wood track to really see what i'm made of!

    Well done, good bench mark for the shaving of 15 seconds over 12.5 laps next time out. I paced a friend along the Thames path recently for his 5k pb attempt. He was busting a gut and hurting as I rode my bike next to him time keeping and whipping him up. He actually hit 18:18 for a pb from 18:32. Hurts in that zone and you just gotta bust through it 💪

      @ThisMessyHappy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Jon. Actually I just removed all cycling and trained consistently with running and strength and conditioning. Usually I only run 3 times per week and then cycle too but just before these PB’s I binned all cycling and ran pretty much every day (although all easy and some were literally 2km to keep the run streak going). I only wanted to do it short term as an experiment but it worked a treat. The HM PB was a week after I stopped running every day and took a proper recovery week. I’ve just managed to maintain that level of fitness since with 3 runs per week and added the bike back in 😊

    Well done but Isn't a 5k race different to a 5000 metre race ? As I understand It a 5000 metre Is a track race whereas a 5k Is typically a road/XC race. This therefore would be your 5000 metre time not your 5k time.

    • @ThisMessyHappy
      @ThisMessyHappy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They’re the same thing, buddy. A 5k PB is a 5,000m PB and vice versa. Just doffeeent names to denote different surface rather than distance. Only elites have track and road 5k PB’s 🤟🏼

      I beg to differ. Power of 10, for example, distinguishes between a track & a road race time for everybody not just elites.

    THAT INNER VOICE...always bothering you after a race/trial: "i could have gone faster"...but there is always that thin line between going out "the risky way" and running on empty tanks the last k's (an absolute killer experience) and starting of conservative and letting it all out at the end. i would say, a smart and experienced runner does it the way you did it. best way to handle a complicated distance like 5k (10k). @ThisMessyHappy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much! Well, yes I can share but it’s actually something I’d never advise as a coach!! 🤦🏻‍♂️😂 not long term anyway. Basically I did a month of running every day. Every run was super easy and usually 2-5km. And then I used that base as a platform to go to 3 runs per week (usually an interval or tempo, a medium base run and a Sunday longer run (which at that stage was about 15km). All of my training is over on Strava in case you’re interested 👍🏻 it wasn’t anything mind blowing just genuine consistency.

    • @scottyanddanni
      @scottyanddanni 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for sharing,
      I give you a new challenge, I did a pot luck calendar run in august of 2020, essentially out all of the days of the month into a hat (1-30/31) pick out a number the night before and then run it. Had days where I did 1k on day one and then 29k on day 2 ....this is a great way to challenge the mind and body.
      At the last week I purposely pulled out 30 & 12 to form the last day as a marathon and ran a 3:18 giving me over a 10min PB.
      I am on Strava @Scotty G check it out

      Big time. Grass is hardest, road is ok if you get a good patch but track is flat and good surface so it takes the worry of where you’re putting your feet out of the equation. Too many potholes etc on roads and pavements!
