Thank for not talking the whole video and getting straight to it and giving the torque specifications, I work on my e46 a lot and these are the videos I look for.
Nice. Bummer about all the rust. Everyone be very careful compressing the Coil Springs. If the strut body is stuck in the pinch area there, find a large flat washer that fits in the slot. With the bolt threads clean, slip the washer in the slot and install the bolt backwards. Slightly tighten to open that slot enough for strut to come out. You may have to adjust once to get the locating pin on strut body to slip past. Hope this helps...
I replaced my front struts a couple of days ago and while it was an enjoyable learning experience I would not do this again, it is far more difficult than all the youtube videos show. The claw style spring compressor just would not compress the springs enough to allow enough room to screw the nut onto the top of the strut shaft so I had to buy the plate style spring compressor to do the job, I also had to loosen and tighten the nuts manually as I didn't have an electric power tool. Just a word of warning, you hear how dangerous it can be to compress the springs and I found out just how true that is as on my first attempt the spring compressor let loose and the spring shot out like a cannon 20 meters into the street out of my garage, luckily I wasn't holding the strut when it happened. The rear shocks on the other hand are a piece of cake and had both replaced in 45 minutes.
Hello Great video Could you kindly confirm that this is fit for a 2006 BMW 330ci ZHP ( convertible) Greatly appreciate if you have time to respond Thank you
Great video, but I kinda wish you would have had trouble getting that front strut off like I did. My control arm would not drop for anything to get my strut out. I struggled for 2hrs and finally I put the spring claps on the spring with it being in my car. It gave me just enough to pull it out. Not sure if the sport package has anything to do with it or not, and if it does and whoever “that has a sport package” is watching to do this job, keep the kids away because a lot of cussing will be flying. I’ve done a lot to this car and that was the first time I lost all confidence. Couldn’t turn back either because two bolts fell/broke from being welded on the strut mount.
I wrote this before doing the other side and a little update and advice. I used the spring claps where I could, then put a ton of zip ties around the spring in a zigzag pattern, and the strut came right out. I used the zip ties on the spring to put it back in as well. Took about 50-60 zip ties but it worked. Once the strut is in the car, slowly cut one by one of course with the jack underneath the control arm pressed up so it doesn’t shoot down. Hope this helps someone out.
If you have to use PB Blaster in a place like this, use the little straw inside the aerosol sprayer in order to focus the stream, then make sure to hit your brake line, outer CV boot, and the inside brake rotor face and caliper with brake cleaner once reassembled. Don't leave this stuff to sit on rubber because it can dissolve it, and on brake parts for obvious reasons.
I know you did this job 2 years ago but i noticed you didnt put the reinforcement plates on. Might be worth checking those out. Im debating on getting either B4s or B6s, not sure which ones to get! Have the B4s been good for you?
Nice work Han. I did mine a few weeks ago too. Same b4 shocks and springs. I did not use an impact to tighten the strut nut. Bmw specifically istructed not to.
in your older DIY you had speaking actually more ..and also you was explaining all the steps what u will gonna do but in this DIY I miss your Voiceover a bit i really like your Ooook's and aaaaallriiiight's haha come on Keep it up Han :) nice job btw
Nice work! Did the new dampers make a big difference? Any chance you removed the boot liner completely? I can't get the liner past the black plastic clip at 14:49, top left of the video.
Gerard Walsh I did remove it but you really dont have to. You can set the panel aside and get to the nuts. You have to put your seat down and take out the cushion on next to the door and theres another clip there
Wow just inspected the bottom of the m3 and the bottom retaining circle on the strut that houses the spring has no clearance and is almost resting at the top of the tire. Bad shock or maybe bad springs? No subframe cracking at the front or mushrooming at the top of the engine bay
At 13:23 I don’t think you have seated the strut the whole way through the housing. The strut should be visible through the bottom whereas you can see it’s not. When you removed the old strut the hub will have dropped so can be raised using a jack stand to raise it towards the new strut.
The strut pinch bolt should also be torqued with the weight of the car on the strut, through the knuckle to the jack underneath, lifting it slightly off that corner's jackstand.
You did not join the bumpstop to the rubber boot! Your rubber boot is just flailing in the wind. The bumpstop has a lip that fits into a groove on the boot which efectively ties them together.
There's a set of adjustable coilovers here at my local junkard on an 05 e46 330i rwd sedan that look great & am considering going and taking them off. However i own the same 05 e46 330 sedan but mine is an 330Xi (AWD) model, they look like they'd fit/work. Should i not attempt the replacement or what Should i do?
You know what you never see or see any youtuber show... the review afterwards. I just had my rear shocks replaced because they were shot (rejected at the MOT/TüV checkup) and you simply get a brand new car back. I swear... speed bumps break a lot of suspension parts these days.
Seriously, that's what I want to see, so I can make my final decision. I can't wait to get me a new set. Both front are shot, and the rear are almost on their way out. I'm so excited to see how my wagon is going to feel after because I can feel how heavy that thing is when it bounces around.
Hey Han, it's great to see you back man, happy New Year! Got a request for you, can you do a video on replacing the 2 plastic coolant hoses that connect to the engine block? I'm nervous about doing this job because I'm gonna have to remove the intake manifold and remove the fuel injectors too. I'd really appreciate it man!
I just removed the coolant pipes under the manifold and decided not to remove the fuel injectors. You don't have to remove them. Just disconnect the fuel line at the back of the intake manifold. I went ahead and also changed the heater hoses along with the other hose that connects to the upper pipe. Take your time. I'm a rookie and I did it! You can too.
HAN'S GARAGE cool! I checked mine and the machine Said they are at 75% and don’t need replacement. But I’m a bit unhappy on how th car handles - too much body roll
Spring doesn’t seat properly on the strut. Shape of the spring matches shape of the strut. Spring should rest on the edge and end of the spring should be after second smaller edge.
After swapping my front strut at the shop my front is sitting higher than my rear side. I haven’t swapped my rear shocks but will it change my rear height as well ?
Lucky me having a convertible. Iam getting my new parts tomorow and realized that a conv has alot more in the way in the trunk. But just now i found this link. No need to work from the trunk. Just half open the top and open som plastic covers to reach the 13mm bolts. Iam leaving the link so others dont start tearing the trunk and other things apart. I hope you dont mind. th-cam.com/video/zMmW1ob-BXI/w-d-xo.html
