Also on another topic, what's the difference between a box to box midfielder and a carrilero? I get box to box midfielders go up and down the pitch length wise and a carrilero is responsible more for the width. Does that mean that the player doesn't get up and down the field as much? Thanks.

    • @StatmanDave
      @StatmanDave  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Box-to-box is a more attacking role. A carrilero or shuttler is in the side to balance the defence. E.g. Shuttler out to the wing to cover a more attacking player.

    • @icycannonball
      @icycannonball 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@StatmanDave So in terms of balance, how would that work then? If you use your example in the video and have a 3 man midfield, a dlp (Depp lying playmaker), a mezzala and a carrilero, how would you cover that hole in the middle of the park? If the mezzala as you mentioned plays in between the gaps and even goes out wide to let the winger move into the middle, and the carrilero covers the more attacking winger in his side by going out wide, wouldn't there be a huge hole where the carrilero and mezzala are if they suddenly lose possession?

    Keita is the kind of player we used to have more of in the 1990s, central midfielders who would properly go box to box and move with the ball. Watch the style played in Serie A when it was at its peak in the 90s, and you saw a lot of this. Players who'd pick up the ball and run with it, maybe a quick one-two and drive through the heart again, drawing opposiotn players out of position and creating space. It was a far more dynamic style of football that disappeared when teams started playing the 4-2-3-1 (Mourinho style) and then the tiki taka (Pep style) approach. So many teams in the 2000s were either sitting back to hit on the break with no real dynamism and not enough movement in possession, or you had teams hogging the ball for the sake of having possession, endlessly passing to draw out the opposition. I miss the old style which was far more fluid and unpredictable. Just my two cents, but I really like seeing a player like Keita in the Premier League.

      Top thoughts Joe. 👍 One day I am going to go back and watch Serie A in the 90s.

      You definitely should-so much individual brilliance.
      One of the most extreme examples of the style were Lazio around 1992/93. You had Gascoigne, Doll, and Fuser playing all over the midfield (Fuser would be on the right side of the other two usually) and all three would take off on runs from deep and draw in three or four players. Winter was considered the defensive midfielder but he'd get forward just as much and was one of the main goal threats. Cravero would play as a sweeper/libero and bring the ball out with him and the back line would push right up into the opposition half and keep them constantly squeezed. They were joint top scorers with 65 goals in 34 games but they also let in 51.

      Whatever Pep calls it, his style is known to most people by that name. At City, perhaps it has evolved in some ways and it's definitely more attractive than what the Spanish national team played during their successful run. Of course, it also depends on the players-Pep's style at Bayern was a step backwards for them and never suited a squad that had just come off the treble playing more dynamic football. The Alonso experiment absolutely killed Bayern as an attractive and fluid football team, and that was definitely a Pep idea. The point I made is that the influence of that Spanish style was felt throughout European football and led to some pretty dire, aimless football in other leagues. Cruyff's Barcelona, I remember as a far more direct and fluid team with only elements of what became known as tiki-taka outside Spain, and while Pep can distance himself from the term his sides have always been more about loading up areas of the pitch and playing short passes in a way Cruyff's never were. Yeah, Sacchi's Milan were on a different level when it came to organizing a team as a unit.

      Personally find Guardiola's philosophy boring, because it tends to be like you said "possession for the sake of possession." Although it has improved somewhat

    Do you reckon a Mezzala would be able to play along side a regista or do you reckon there’d be too much competition to who should be carrying the ball up?

    i think Dave forgot to include Coutninho as a modern day Mezzala. I am sure that is why Barcelona were so eager to sign him because he is the natural heir to Iniesta. Coutinho is more dangerous though because of his eye for a worldy long ranger.
