What is a False 9? | Roberto Firmino’s Role in Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool Explained

- What is a False 9? Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have started the season superbly, carrying the form that got them to the 2018 Champions League Final into their opening games. The main reason Liverpool progressed so far in Europe was their scintillating strike force of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and top goalscorer, Mo Salah. Whilst the pace of Mane and Salah was enough to scare the top teams, it was the intelligence of Roberto Firmino, and his near perfect execution of the False 9 role that really propelled Liverpool to Kiev.
Like many roles in football, the False 9 first debuted in the 1930s however Johan Cruyff found huge success when deployed in the role. El Salvador as a False 9 was devastating, scoring more than 20 goals in every full season. In his time at Ajax as a False 9, Cruyff helped Ajax to three back-to-back European Cup titles, whilst also picking up the Ballon D’Or 3 times. The next truly great False 9 also dominated Europe for years, winning Domestic and Champions League titles, whilst also picking up the Ballon D’Or multiple times. That man was Lionel Messi. Pep Guardiola moved the diminutive Argentinian from playing as an Inverted Right Winger to playing centrally as a False 9. That Barcelona team was a thing of beauty when in full flight, Busquets, Xavi, Iniesta, David Villa and the great Lionel Messi and went on to dominate one of the best Manchester United sides of all time in two separate Champions League finals. Whilst Messi enabled Barcelona to dominate possession like no team before, Karim Benzema’s interpretation of the False 9 allowed Cristiano Ronaldo to become the greatest goal scorer of all time. The Frenchman plays laterally, creating space centrally for Ronaldo by running the channels and providing cutbacks or by dropping off the line, like a traditional False 9, before playing the Portuguese legend into the channels. Madrid’s exploitation of the channels both in possession and on the counter by isolating the oppositions centre backs with flying forwards, Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo, has seen Los Blancos get their hands on 4 of the last 5 Champions League trophies. Finally, Liverpool’s Brazilian centre forward, Roberto Firmino, has hit new heights under Jürgen Klopp. His days at Hoffenheim saw him become as a versatile forward, capable of playing anywhere across the front four. It could be this versatility that has allowed Firmino to blossom into one of the best False 9s in the modern game. Leading Klopp’s gegenpress, Firmino is the first defender in Liverpool’s system and has won more tackles than any other top 6 Premier League defender, bar Chelsea’s César Azpilicueta. Not only does the Brazilian defend superbly, but his attacking output isn’t bad either. In 78 games as a striker for Liverpool, Roberto Firmino has been directly involved in 71 goals, including 2 goals and 2 assists in Liverpool’s first leg demolition of AS Roma in last year’s Champions League Semi Final.

Cruyff is one of the greatest players of all time and has possibly been the most influential person in the history of the game through both his playing and most importantly his coaching years, however Messi has become the greatest player of all time

Hasn't always been. Messi has been a wide trequartista before (wide midfielder/winger who drifts behind lines, scores goals and doesn't use his work rates too much)

@@abuhassan8849 without Firmino Salah would score far fewer goals due to not having the space to break into. Firmino also doesn't have a clear replacement at Liverpool whereas Mane plays in a similar role to Salah and Shaqiri also could - even if they have less individual quality. Firminos pressing also allows Liverpool to win the ball high up the pitch and create chances quickly for Salah and Mane.
Goals win games but first you need to create them.
In the case of RM Benzema was very important in allowing Ronaldo space to score even more goals however Ronaldo's incredible individual quality and athleticism makes him the 2nd best player of his generation and more important than Salah. Ronaldo has showed that he can be incredible in many systems and over many years (playing as a true winger at United for example or as a striker latter in his career. Whereas Salah has only truly been world class when playing for Liverpool under Klopp.

Dimitrije Tucović Not been able to use him as I tend to manage sides outside the top 20 leagues and by the time I get to the stage where I can sign big players they’re usually retired but from screenshots I’ve seen and based on the fact he moves to PSG, Real Madrid or Man City constantly I can only assume he’s brilliant👍

I'd like to keep it that way tho. as soon as a player getting too much praise and spotlight it's hard to keep being unselfish, they'll be under pressure to always prove themselves which force them to get selfish on the pitch. Imo we shouldn't hype bobby too much like we do with Salah and Mane. Let bobby feels like he is under radar and let him work in peace. As long as fans make sure he knows he is loved, that's enough. We always sing his song etc he knows we appreciate and recognize his work.

Statman Dave If it helps getting their confidence back I say why not. Btw I saw your video concerning us playing 3-5-2, it can work since we have the right players for that. We just need a Alderweireld(or Rojo) along side Bailly and Fosu-Mensah in the back 3(I don't trust Smalling, Jones and Lindelof in the back 3 since their error prone and poor defenders overall), Pogba playing behind Sanchez and Lukaku and Dalot and Shaw as our wing-backs. In that way we could jump start our season again.

Benzema isnt a false nine. He is a deep lying forward. He is way too much time in the box for a false 9.
The same goes for Lewa at Dortmund.
Firmino is the most underrated PL player. He is a back up to Jesus for Christ(see what i did there) sake. The most complete forward. He isnt a finisher like Kane or a poacher like Aguero. He is so much more than that.

False 9 striker is my favorite offensive position in football/soccer. Leo Messi and Roberto Firmino are the best ones in this position.
Key basics and requirements to become a false 9 striker: speed, endurance, dribbling, ball control, technique, scoring, passing, tactical intelligence, vision, creativity, off the ball movement and positioning.
Hoping to see Marco Asensio play in this role in games against lesser teams this year at Madrid as well as for Spain.
Did so well for Lopetegui's Spain in that position. Such a good player.
You need really attacking wingers for that to work and Spain lack this type of player... Madrid could maybe work if they get an other winger of the Bale kind
If we're stuck with Morata this season, I think Sarri should consider training him like a false 9, allowing Hazard and other wingers to score more. Zola could be a good mentor too

Firmino probably is the best false nine in the modern game, and I'd say so because of how far beyond their previous levels Mane and Salah operated last season. Also Firmino scores a lot of headers and tap-ins, he challenges centre halves for clearances, there isn't that much downside compared to a proper 9.
