  • This 1949 Mercury coupe is for sale in our Louisville KY showroom. The first postwar Mercury was introduced in 1949 and began the whole "pontoon" styling movement which would finally differentiate the Merc from its Ford cousin. The Mercury eight was a true hit with early car customizers and became known simply as "The Sled". While Ford was taking over the fast and furious market the Merc was tackling the low and slow part of the market. This 49 has finally put the best of both worlds in one package. The owner decided he wanted something a little different so a chop was out of the question. The stock body was stripped down and completely gone over putting new steel fenders and quarters on while keeping the original flowing lines of the classic body. He knew the bodywork would have to be perfect since he was going with the hardest color to do right, BLACK. He made the right decision and after 10000 dollar bill for the paint job he knew everything else would have to meet this high standard. All the bright work was reechoed and gives the perfect contrast next to the sky black paint. Now of course he had to go with the classic baby moons and wide white walls on all four corners to just to complete that classic look. The interior was the next thing to be tackled which was also going to be the classic look. White vinyl with black piping definitely brings it all together but just like on the outside he had have it a little different. That is where the Auto Meter gauges come in. It gives the car just enough of a different look to remind you that this a whole new animal. That does not come more evident than when you hit that start button. The slow rumble turns into a mad roar rather quick and then you realize this thing is a whole new way of doing a sled. Under that big round sleek black hood lies a 351 cubic inch Ford racing motor. With an electronic choke and ignition it doesn't get more reliable than this. The handling the spent gasses are a set of custom headers that are not only heat treated on the outside but the inside as well. Of course it made them last forever but also cut the exterior pipe temperature in half. With the addition of power steering and AC there was a worry about overheating so a dual core aluminum radiator was sourced which has kept this high rev high power motor in the cool no matter what the situation. Keeping the sled moving down the road is the ever reliable C6 automatic transmission. Planting the power to ground is a Ford inch which is most would say the best rear end money can buy. If you want a great car that not only goods but was built to drive and look darn good doing it look no further. Options on this 1949 Mercury Eight Coupe include, AC, AM, Power Steering, Power Brakes, Power Locks Keyless Entry, White Walls, Radial Tires, Aluminum Wheels, Tilt Wheel and Vinyl Interior. My opinion the best car ever made. I had a metallic blue 49, my treasure, nosed, decked, as much chrome that I could purchase under the hood. God, I miss that car so much. The last I heard it was in Hawaii.
