egaeca1 I was fortunate enough to be able to see the last night Chad performed Memphis on Broadway. He would soon after need surgery because he had suffered nerve damage in his neck from the constant strain the musical was putting on his voice. The DVD was not shot until long after the musical debut. By the time the DVD was shot his voice was already suffering. But that night he made it a point to hit the beautiful high C, which truly sends chills up ones spine. RL>DVD
The first time I heard this song, I just sat there, on the ground, in front of my TV screen, tears just streaming down my face. Regardless of him being unable to hit the high note properly, the emotion he packs in this song makes up for it.
If you thought this ending was unhappy, don't watch West Side Story. I'll never forget the first time I saw it - I was raised on MGM musicals with all happy endings!
I think this is a prime example of how “perfect” vocals aren’t everything. Chad may not have hit the ending notes perfectly, but he performed that song to perfection and most importantly told the story better than most people could. And that’s why they gave him the role.
Chad suffered nerve damage in his neck, so he couldn't belt high notes. As far as splicing in prerecorded material- they probably wanted to keep it true to the performances they recorded over the 3 days... which meant Chad not finishing high.
I've been watching this video for several times. It's amazing. This song and Chad's performance are perfect! Congrats! My singing teacher ask me to sing this song...but do it like Chad does is completely impossible. He is the best!!!
Holy crap. I was in a New Hampshire summer stock theatre production of Brigadoon with that guy. I was still in high school and was just one of the town people but I remember him and thinking how good he was!
i cried watching this in my drama class, but i tried my best to hold them back because i didnt know if i was the only one who was crying. it didnt work.
Saw this cast on Broadway and recently purchased the DVD. This is one of the best musicals I have seen and the performance by Chad Kimball is one of the best, if not the best, single performances in any role I've ever saw. Like Hugh Jackman's role in The Boy From Oz, this role cannot be duplicated. I love Adam Pascal, but this role belongs to Chad Kimball.
Compared the two singing and have to say Adam's singing is a little too "pretty". It's very "musical theater" where the country sound Chad brings just fits better for the time period, place, and type of music being portrayed. The way Chad sings it adds a little more authenticity to the role and he seems much better at embodying the character of Huey Calhoun.
Saw this on broadway (er, the street right next to it), and was fortunate enough to get the original cast. This is my favorite song in the world, and I'm grateful to Chad and the rest of the cast for putting on such an amazing performance
I was wondering the same thing. It's amazing hearing him hit that- i figured multiple performances took it's toll..... He's an amazing singer- loved this musical. Disappointed it's off Broadway now...
That's too bad. I hope he can get better. Its still a hell of a performance without it. As he starts to sings I feel like I'm gonna cry, it's that beautiful. Chad you're amazing, high C/D (?)or not. I just bought the DVD. Thanks for the great performance!
【Lyrics】 There's a town that I call home Where all the streets are paved with soul Down on Beale there's a honky-tonk bar (So) hear the wail of a blues guitar Have a beer and drop a dime in the blind man's jar The blues sing softly in the air like a Sunday morning prayer Just one more drink and you'll see God everywhere Like a sad old melody that cheers you up, it sets you free That's how Memphis lives in me There comes a time when muddy waters run rough There comes a point when a man has had enough Like a friend who always stands by me Memphis knows me Memphis shows me How did life just had to be I couldn't even try to run away, say goodbye Here I was born and here is where I'll die I'm just a man from Tennessee I can't be what I can't be All I know is Memphis lives in me I said I'm just a man from Tennessee Can't be what I can't be All I know is Memphis lives All I know is Memphis gives All I know is Memphis lives in me

Probably because Chad wasn't in it any more!! Whoever plays Huey, the show should not have been cancelled. It is far better than the shows that have been running for years...makes no sense to me!
Does anyone know why the DVD doesnt have Chad hitting the High C in this song. There are several clips of him doing it, but it didnt make it to the DVD. They should have spliced it in. I know he cant do it every time, he's not God, but it sure is the best and most chilling part of this song. I would think they would have thought so too and put it in.
After listening to Chad sing this song I have NEVER heard anything better. I went to see Memphis in the west end and the singing was just so disappointing compared to this guy
Emily Carter your saying matt cardle won the x facter and chad kimball is better. I admit it he is good but he can’t even hit the high notes at all and the only reason i can find he is better he sings in a American style and it fits in and also there is editing on not making sound live thats what makes this sound better

Yeah I see what you mean. I do like Adam Pascal, but Chad has always been my favorite. His voice is different, yeah, but I love its sound and it feels more like the character. And of course Chad is a stellar actor, even putting in all those little Huey habits. Not putting down Adam of course, he's really super talented too
I love Chad's portrayal of Huey!! His voice is raw and filled with emotion. He sounds like he really could be from Memphis!!

Lucky you. I would have given anything to hear him. Thanks for responding.
There's a place that I call home, where all the streets are paved with soul.

To think that Chad Kimball is from Seattle, that is such a feat. :] I love Memphis too, just kidding.
i saw Memphis live in NY with Chad. it was amazing.
I saw the production at the Orpheum back in 2011. During this song, the entire audience was outright weeping. I will NEVER forget that moment.
I love this song so much! I cry every time, Memphis is my absolute favorite Broadway play & no body can play Huey like Chad Kimbell :'D

My fine arts teacher showed my senior class this musical, greatest thing I've ever seen!!!!! Loved it
Chad, what can I say...I adore him and this musical. I can't wait to see Chad in something else. he has soul!
Chad needs to reprise the role of Huey in a movie version of MEMPHIS with Ruben Studdard, Danny Pudi, Donald Glover, Jessica Chastain and Ego Nwodim.
I've been watching this video for several times. It's amazing. This song and Chad's performance are perfect! Congrats! My singing teacher ask me to sing this song...but do it like Chad does is completely impossible. He is the best!!!

I just watched this Broadway show on PBS, this song made me cry. It was sang with such feeling and heart. Great job Chad.
best huey ever
Wow chad did an amazing job!!
This song was sung during Shabbat services tonight at Temple Israel in Memphis as a prelude to Rabbi Micah Greenstein’s sermon. I was moved by both.
he makes this song live and no one will ever sing it better!
This is my FAVORITE Broadway play, it's do beautiful & moving, every time I hear this song I tear up a little{:')
gosh i love him. the best part is that he's from seattle, but if I didn't know that I would swear he was from Memphis
Oh I love this song and the singner, he acts just perfectly. Keeping listing again and again.
i cried watching this in my drama class, but i tried my best to hold them back because i didnt know if i was the only one who was crying. it didnt work.

Memphis (the Musical) knows me.
Powerful!
David Bryan from Bon Jovi wrote this.....BRILLIANT!!!
Wish PBS Would Release Chad's Version From "In Performance From The White House". During Bush 43's Tenure.
Yup, it gets to me that way, too.

Chad has a fan page on facebook. It keeps you up to date on what he is doing.
Huey. No better ever. Chills.

Awww I was looking forward to hearing that D at the end. Nevertheless, a mesmerizing performance.

I thought the same thing. could have sworn that was a younger Robin Williams.
So true, bryn61213!
Who was the replacement after this guy? I saw someone else in 2011.
What's his hair secret? It's really thin here but when he debuted in Come From Away he had (and still does have) a full head of hair.
Matt Stryker
It’s a wig.
Just heard that Mephis is coming to London. I wonder if Chad will be coming over?
2:18 kind of reminds me of Ray Allen. Haha but I love when the main people sing right after that, it is amazing
I could see Robin Williams in 0:22-0:25 :(
I thought so too!
Please anyone! Can someone please tell me where I can see this online or get it? The full musical
MEMPHIS CLOSES ON BROADWAY ON AUGUST 5TH!!! Why is it closing????? I would kill to see it and soon its going to be gone. :(
Hello! thank you for uploading this, what at great musical, huh? do you have the full show in it's entirity?

C neutral. I played the note on my piano while listening to this. It's a C.
Why does it cut @ 2:50
BroadwayInHD because it is edited

C# actually
Looked him up because I heard him hit that high note.
Wasn't diappointed, honestly.
The 10 dislikes are racist people.
It's too bad that he doesn't hit that high D at the end in this video.
But on the other hand, that high D is pretty much in-human!
Next time i will write in english lol,,sorry,,was telling my soul..
Where's the sassy riff?
I can't believe they're making a film adaptation of this musical. I think the cast should be:
Justin Timberlake as Huey Calhoun
Beyonce Knowles as Felicia
Jamie Foxx as Delray
Kathy Bates or Bernadette Peters as Mama
Usher Raymond as Gator

Tate Thurgood agreed. Both Chad and Adam are amazing performers but I prefer Chad's version of this song
Brody Grant was better i think
It's a D, but okay.
This is the only really good song in the show. The love songs really suck.
Adam pascal sings it better.
