    This isn't music, it's science! Very helpful tutorials, I never had a brass teacher who went into this level of detail.

    Your videos are amazing! Been playing tuba for 12 years and consider myself pretty good at it, but I just started teaching myself euphonium and you are helping me develop my higher register quite quickly!

      Hey buddy, thanks for nice words! It absolutely applies to any brass instrument. I've not been doing all that many videos specific for euphonium recently, most of what I talk about fits every instrument so I could help out more peeps and this video would absolutely work for tuba my friend! Give it a go and let me know whether it helped!

    Matonizz,
    Great dem!
    Btw, I first learned that exercise from the same source as you. Later I found it in som Arnold Jacobs material.
    Did Pat or Sam (probably Sam) get it from Jacobs?

    • @Matonizz
      @Matonizz  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Ole! I think most of the exercises used in Brass Gym are taken from other books. I might be wrong but I don't believe they claim exercises as their own, they just show the way to practice them in order to benefit the most. I might be wrong though :) However, Jacobs would sound about right. Good question, thanks for watching buddy!

    • @ojtrumpet
      @ojtrumpet 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you are right. They picked exercises, etc. Pilafian talk a bit about in TubaPeopleTV if I remeber right.
      I found the exercise now - "Special Studies for the Tuba" by Arnold Jacobs: 5. Tone Building - exercise e)

      Use a brush to clean the tuning slides and leadpipe than submerge it in hot soapy water

    • @acm-gs8jl
      @acm-gs8jl 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Take valves out and line them up on a towel then take out all of the slides and do the same. Then take everything and submerge in bathtub full of warm soapy water for about 30min then wipe everything down with a soft but clingy rag (I recommend microfiber rags) then let it air dry. Afterwards assemble everything and oil and grease you slides and valves then use a polish like brasso

      Oof. . Check the used market and test play that instrument. I know of some chinesium that was surprisingly good (for what it cost anyway), but i have yet to find a consistently bad brand. List price and brand are secondary concern for me when looking for an instrument. I find one used (they keep their used value very well), test it and if it plays nice with me i roll with it. If you are a beginner (which i dont know), get a used one anyway.

      @acm-gs8jl 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      seven yeah I mostly agree with you. But I’d try to avoid the newer king ones because they’re really just not built to last. But for brands that make good Euphoniums? I’d say for small shanks Yamaha and for large shanks Jupiter

    Do you have any thoughts on the Plastic Euphoniums/Tubas. I'm talking for someone like myself who currently has a 4/4 brass tuba but as I get older I find it more difficult to carry and hold. I play in a community band so I'm not a professional by any means but do enjoy making music, and hope to continue for as long as I can.

    • @Matonizz
      @Matonizz  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Plastic euphonium could be an option or check some Adams E1 euphs. They are extremely light! If that is too expensive than plastic euph could be second choice. However, even though they can be ok for practice it might be hard to get much of a sound in a band environment unfortunately.

      DCI Follower As far as I know it becomes more necessary when you get super high, but should be avoided if possible. I noticed a negative effect on my playing when I played a piece that had a high range. I instinctively tensed up and arched my tongue. As a result, the air was pressurized and began to spread before reaching my lips. In the end, my tone became disgustingly airy and thin. I've been fixing this by making sure to have as little tension in my throat as possible.

    I have a terrible habit of sinking my bottom lip under my top lip, and trying to fix it feels really uncomfortable. Is this normal?

    • @TubaFire11
      @TubaFire11 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Likely a cognitive dissonance. The brain wants to keep the status quo, i.e. what works feels comfortable and something that doesn't feel or sound comfortable is "wrong" according to the brain. Stay the course, and you will slowly see that you are more successful over time. Habits are not easy to break but if you are consistent and stubborn about making the change you will see progress.

    So I'm currently learning Pantomime and the very last note is a high F. I'm playing on a Wilson 2900 that is from school. It's very difficult hitting it. Could it be that the instrument wasn't made to hit it or is it a personal issue?

    • @Matonizz
      @Matonizz  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey man! Both is the answer! I've just got back from Tuba/Euph expo in Washington D.C. and had a chance to test Wilson decent amount. I will make a review video on the brand in the upcoming days but one thing I can tell you is that they are very stuffy. That being said, you can definitely hit high notes if you're high range skills are really good, it's just not the easiest instrument to do it, especially as a last note. Btw, coincidence but I'm performing Pantomime in couple of days, will put a video on if I have a chance to film it. Best of luck with your high F practice and let me know if you got more questions!
