Very true. I just yesterday read a comment by an atheist saying that he was "offended" whenever a Christian stated that he believed the Bible was "the truth". WHY would that OFFEND you? - I've never taken offense at anyone simply stating their honest beliefs, and don't see what in the world there is to get offended about. What, is he just "offended" by being confronted with the fact that not everyone in the world thinks just like he does??
@@BogartSlap , most probably he/she just gave you taste of your medicine. Being atheist doesn't mean 100% rational, all it means is that they use their brain a bit (and hence are smarter on average) more than religious lot. Statement "being offended is not an argument" stands correct, at least in my opinion. Calling bible "the truth" is a gross lie, *and you know it* , maybe that person was offended because he/she was knowingly and willingly lied to (and repeatedly lied to, if your account is assumed to be accurate).
@@_-AB-_ "all it means is that they use their brain a bit (and hence are smarter on average) more than religious lot." I haven't seen any actual research studies on that point - and I'd be skeptical as hell of the methodology of one, as it would just be very difficult to properly design and execute such a study. But speaking purely anecdotally, I haven't seen that to be the case - It's been my (albeit limited) experience that atheist zealots are just about as stupid as Christian zealots. And the implication that religious people DON'T use their brain a bit is, well, snotty and snide, and most of all, untrue. Deeply religious people, stretching at least as far back as Augustine, are responsible for composing much of western philosophy. Additionally, I've tripped across very, very few atheists who have actually thought through the logical conclusions that implicitly follow from their basic core beliefs and who, therefore, continually make statements or assertions that are blatant logical contradictions of their basic atheist philosophical stance. Anyway, that's my two cents. :) Thanks for chiming in.
@@BogartSlap , majority of good engineers (I am one and conduct interviews) are atheist, majority of good medical doctors are atheist (by good I mean who apply themselves to problem at hand rather than doing rote work). Overwhelming majority of scientists, PHD holders are atheist. Please read again, or I'd just put it down again in case I didn't phrase it correctly earlier, "On average atheists tend to use their brain a bit more than religious lot". It's just observation, there is nothing "snotty" about it. 1) I believe you know that finding a religious zealot is far much more easier than "atheist zealot". 2) Most religious people contributed to arts and science NOT because of religiousness but for a livelihood. More then a few were condemned for it by religious lot. List any five influences of Augustine that were *exclusive* to him (or derived just from him) AND are regarded useful in any field which promotes well-being.
@@_-AB-_ Sorry, but I TOTALLY call "bullshit". Several studies/surveys have found that 75-80% of doctors identify themselves as religious, or are identified as religious by their behaviors (church attendance, prayer, etc.) - so the only way that your assertion that the majority of "good doctors" are atheists could be true would be if there were very, very, very few good doctors - and I seriously doubt that you can back THAT notion up with objective data. "Overwhelming majority of scientists, PHD holders are atheist" Again, no. In fact, a 2016 Pew study found that Christians have an average 9.3 years of schooling, while "religious unaffiliated" (includes atheists and agnostics) only have an average of 8.8 years. (Number one is Jewish people, who have a whopping 13.4 years of schooling on average.) Jews also have the highest number of graduate and post-graduate degrees per capita (61%) - Christians are in second place per capita, with 22%, but in first place in absolute numbers. Religiously unaffiliated, which includes atheists and agnostics, comes in third per capita, at 16% - in terms of absolute numbers, they're obviously way behind both Jews and Christians. And that's a very salient point - the fact that such a very small percentage of the population is atheist. Approximately 21% of the US population is "religiously unaffiliated", but atheists specifically are only 3%. It's patently absurd then to assert that the "overwhelming majority" of scientists/PhD holders are atheist, as even if EVERY atheist became a scientist - and obviously that's NOT the case - because they're such a small percentage of the population to begin with, there's no way in hell they could add up to being an "overwhelming majority" of all scientists. Such an assertion is what we logicians call "absurd on its face". Now, according to a 2009 Pew research center survey, it IS true that belief in God is significantly less common among scientists than among the general population. But again, that still doesn't add up to the "overwhelming majority" of them being atheists. Even among the non-believing-in-God crowd in the scientific community, the majority of THOSE people are agnostic rather than atheist. According to a 2015 global survey by Gallup, the MOST religious people had lower levels of education, however, religious people IN GENERAL were the MAJORITY at ALL educational levels. ""On average atheists tend to use their brain a bit more than religious lot". It's just observation" I'd say that's a subjective perception of yours, rather than an objective observation. And the idea that it's a subjective perception is supported by the simple fact that my subjective perception differs from yours. " finding a religious zealot is far much more easier than "atheist zealot" Well, I'd say that's only true to the extent that finding a religious PERSON, period, is much easier, since they make up such a larger percentage of the population. But if one does manage to dig up equal numbers of each - say, 20 Christians and 20 atheists - then I'd say that among those two crowds, there are likely to be just as many, if not more, zealous atheists than zealous religious people. Consider the fact that a LOT of religious people are merely "pew sitters", not the least bit zealous about their religion. In contrast, I've met relatively few "lukewarm" atheists. I think the percentage of "true believers" among atheists is likely considerably higher than the percentage of "true believers" who are, say, Methodist or Catholic.

While I agree with most of what he says, how would the world benefit from him? Do you really think anything he says has ever convinced people to drop their faith? That's not how religion works and that's not how people that fall for religions operate. I don't say it is impossible to turn theists into atheists but you surely cannot do that with cold logic and hard facts - if these people were receptive to logic and facts they would not be religious in the first place. And mocking them, calling them names, brutally de masking everything they believe in will reduce those slim chances even more by many, many factors because all it does is firing up their defence mechanisms. If you attack a person and/or their inner beliefs they are up in arms to protect their mind, it triggers the same run or fight mechanism that is triggered when you are in physical danger, if that person was at least a bit reasonable and rational, attacking them like this assures that last bit or reason will shut down, too. Out of all the virtues, all the supposed virtues, faith must be the most overrated”-- Christopher Hitchens Now, look at what biblical faith really means that Hitch the liar didn't even look at: Biblically, faith means trust. It's a trust by evidence seen. God asks that we prove things. To reason. To get knowledge. To study. God has nothing to hide. We develop trust from what is seen, and that which is not seen yet is trusted also because of the trust built up from what is seen. It's much like a human relationship. We don't trust much until a person has gained that trust from what is observed. The difference is though, God is not limited to human powers. He created us. Real science says nothing does nothing. Real science says if there was something there already it must fit with the evidence of what we know. We know the 1LT says there's a conservation of energy. It can change forms and neither can be created or destroyed. Creation cannot happen by natural means. The 2LT has various aspects, one being the universe is winding down, entropy. Usable energy is becoming less usable, so at one point usable energy was at its max. This all points to a supernatural creation, by a supernatural creator at a certain point in which matter, space, and time were created. When I read how it can happen otherwise, ALL the fools resort to science-fiction. Once a supernatural creation is accepted, then the next step is finding proof of what supernatural power did it. We can't even get science without God. The laws of nature only can come from a Lawgiver, God. Life only comes from life. Law of biogenesis. Hitchens actually has a shallow opinion on religion enslaving or putting believers in chains. We get it-- he hates religion like so many arrogant libtards. But to many it is the opposite of being in chains. It frees many from the imprisonment of hate which seems to overtake so many liberals.
Probably of his time. But even there are contenders. But he was standing on the shoulders of giants. And those giants were bigger and more important than him. Just imagine where we would be right now without the old greeks or the enlightenment.
@Christopher Adams The shoulders he stood on? Just look at the people he quoted regularly. Hume, Epicur, Plato, Socrates, ... The contenders? The people he admired and thought of as brothers in his war against religion. Harris, Dawkins, Grey, Dennett, Fry, Krauss, ...
Shame you misconstrued his words while doing it, he was a liberal and "destroyed" a lot more conservatives. Cause y'know... 99% of all fundamentalists are conservative
(To copy post from above) I think you've got the definitions confused: Left wingers are those on the left economically e.g. socialists, communists etc... Liberals are the SJW movement you're referring to - those who e.g. want to limit free speech and accept Islam Libertarians are those in favour of personal liberty, and separation of church and state. Therefore Hitch (although he changed ideologies throughout his life) was most commonly known as a left wing libertarian (or something there abouts) as opposed to a liberal who is the complete opposite, and much more in keeping with social conservatives than libertarians.
Young, Ideological & Politically Naive Look at you trying to justify your lie. Liberals aren't the 'sjw' movement. It's a meaningless phrase, just like 'pc'. You can twist what you said however you want, but from where I come from words don't change meaning just because some fool on the internet says so. Stop crossing wires, Hitchens wasn't a xenophobe

Asking him was the polite thing to do.

Yes, the right to self-determination, exercise of reason and control of your own life should be A given - not have to BE given. It's not something you should have to be give thanks for, like when you receive a present. It just is. Innate. If we claim humans have to be greatful for being given the right to what should be such a basic, intrinsic thing, then we are less free in fact and have less self-determination than, for example, any wild animal which patently do whatever occurs to them to do at all times. We should not have to feel greatful for being treated with such a basic level of consideration as a rational being with an innate right to determine your own life. As if trying to please a hostage taker who'll kill you if you put a toe out of line.
The Bibliognost Well at least it didn't appeal to supernatural bullshit. I thought it was quite poetic and beautiful myself, given that we all originate from stardust.

@@_-AB-_ "all it means is that they use their brain a bit (and hence are smarter on average) more than religious lot."
I haven't seen any actual research studies on that point - and I'd be skeptical as hell of the methodology of one, as it would just be very difficult to properly design and execute such a study.
Thanks for chiming in.

"Overwhelming majority of scientists, PHD holders are atheist"
Again, no.
It's just observation"
I'd say that's a subjective perception of yours, rather than an objective observation. And the idea that it's a subjective perception is supported by the simple fact that my subjective perception differs from yours.
" finding a religious zealot is far much more easier than "atheist zealot"
Well, I'd say that's only true to the extent that finding a religious PERSON, period, is much easier, since they make up such a larger percentage of the population.

What a shame he's not with us anymore. The world would really benefit from having him around today.

--"Faith is the surrender of the mind, it's the surrender of reason, it's the surrender of the only thing that makes us different from other animals. It's our need to believe and to surrender our skepticism and our reason, our yearning to discard that and put all our trust or faith in someone or something, that is the sinister thing to me. ... Out of all the virtues, all the supposed virtues, faith must be the most overrated”-- Christopher Hitchens
Now, look at what biblical faith really means that Hitch the liar didn't even look at:
Biblically, faith means trust.
Romans 1:20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

Hitchens always went into evasive word antics to avoid key questions like how we got the creation of the universe.

Deuteronomy 23:15-16 states also, *"You should NOT hand over a slave to his master when he escapes from his master and comes to you. He may dwell among you in whatever place he chooses in one of your cities, wherever he likes, you MUST NOT MISTREAT HIM".*
Exodus 21:26-27 states, *"If a man strikes the eye of his slave man or slave girl and he destroys it, he is to let the slave go free in compensation"* .
Similarly with a tooth being knocked out in verse 27.
*Slavery was a last resort but voluntarily done and fairly dignified way for the poor to make a living and is NOT to be confused with Colonial slavery of the last 200 years or so.*

"When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are."

The Bibliognost you did it again! Amen brother, may God Bless You!
Hitchens is an inspiration to be free from religion. I thank him for being so open and welcoming in discussing truth about life.
the more increasingly apparent problem is though, we are at an age where in the western world for the most part the actual far right wing and criminal aspects of the christianfaith and church are eradicated but now you have armies of people completly without religion, so tinstead they subscribed to social justice in its place ad now you got a bunch of insane butthurt whiny millenials with no direction or spiritual meaning in their lives so all they know is to destroy and hate.
His opinion, not objective truth.
@The Bibliognost Just like the God worship. At least Hitchens existed.
Hitchens actually has a shallow opinion on religion enslaving or putting believers in chains. We get it-- he hates religion like so many arrogant libtards. But to many it is the opposite of being in chains. It frees many from the imprisonment of hate which seems to overtake so many liberals.
Ohh man, how i miss hitch, he is truly one of my biggest heroes in life, may your voice be heard for countless generations to come.

The shoulders he stood on? Just look at the people he quoted regularly. Hume, Epicur, Plato, Socrates, ...
The contenders? The people he admired and thought of as brothers in his war against religion. Harris, Dawkins, Grey, Dennett, Fry, Krauss, ...
I love this so much. Love Hitchens and miss him terribly. Thank you for this.

Shame you misconstrued his words while doing it, he was a liberal and "destroyed" a lot more conservatives. Cause y'know... 99% of all fundamentalists are conservative

I think you've got the definitions confused:
Left wingers are those on the left economically e.g. socialists, communists etc...
Liberals are the SJW movement you're referring to - those who e.g. want to limit free speech and accept Islam
Libertarians are those in favour of personal liberty, and separation of church and state.
Therefore Hitch (although he changed ideologies throughout his life) was most commonly known as a left wing libertarian (or something there abouts) as opposed to a liberal who is the complete opposite, and much more in keeping with social conservatives than libertarians.
Young, Ideological & Politically Naive Hitchens was a liberal, formerly he was a Marxist. Never a libertarian.
Young, Ideological & Politically Naive Look at you trying to justify your lie. Liberals aren't the 'sjw' movement. It's a meaningless phrase, just like 'pc'.

But seriously, I would love to see someone like Neil DeGrasse Tyson found a religious-like organization based on SCIENCE. Weekly gatherings where basic and advanced science was taught, questions round-tabled, that sort of thing - what an organized religion does - help the community, reach-out programs, etc. only based on sound science and logical principles (Logic - it's better to be alive then dead. It's better to live in moderate comfort than moderate pain. No third-party requirements. Moral compass? The Golden Rule * 110%. Give better than you get, help OR harm.)
"These people are so nice they are hardly religious at all." LOL perfect
I do wish he was still alive. He was the skeptic's bulldog and never took any of the religious blather of priests, imans and other so-called holy men.
I miss Christopher Hitchens so much. He was absolutely prescient.

That is similar to an argument I often use with atheists. How do you KNOW that you have not already met God? Do you know what he looks like? He can look like anything he wishes; Jesus disguised himself and walked with his own disciples and they did not recognize him although they recognized his spirit or something. Sheep know their shepherd's voice.
I love how Hitch destroys some of the people who passive aggressively question him.
"I meant to ask.. how are you feeling?"
"Well, I'm dying. But so are you."
The thing is he had such a real grasp on life that it was ok he was going to die. We should all strive to have the positive impact he had, I know I'd die happy. Zeus bless him.

oh let me guess, your saving us right? youre so all powerful hero. Well hero, how many homeless have you sheltered, how many hungry mouths have you feed? not near as much as your local church so in comparison, you really are a giant piece of shit, arent you?

A blend of profound wit and tremendous courage ... all that and more ... that was Christopher Hitchens. The man was ... and continues to be ... a gift and a role model to all those who value rationality, logic, and free thought. I miss him tremendously. None like him.
All he did was expose the negative, never giving anything positive, not for me. A little sunshine would be nice once in a while. His humour was always about how smart he thought he was.
