We had a brand new rental 318 compact in 1999. The gentleman from Hertz gave us this for the week (as we were on our honeymoon in Far North Queensland) for the same price as a Toyota Camry. Such a comfortable car to drive. This started a long love affair for my wife and I with BMW. Now in the garage is an X1 and X7!!

  • @bertswift

Quite right guys, I had been driving my VW 16v GTI for 8 years when the 318ti was introduced in America. I had always wanted a BMW but could not afford one as a young guy. When I was shopping the 318ti, I was offered the chance to put my name on the list of orders for a special edition called the 318ti Club Sport (only 200 units). I have owned my red Club Sport since 1995 and I love the car, only buying a M240i coupe this year. However, while my new car is very fast and handles excellent, it has none of the lightweight, nimble feeling of my M42 powered 318ti Club Sport. I love my ti and will always have it in my stable.

These are cars I could die for.I have the 1998 318ti in metalic blue with 16' inch alloys(all original)The M44 may not be the most powerful engine but it's very smooth and responsive through the ZF 4 speed transmission. The road handling is as sharp as a razor on twisting roads and comfortable and quiet on motorways.Personally I think they look great and with rear wheel drive it's a seriously cool car.Strange how these cars look even better and more desirable now than when the last ones rolled of the production line 23 years ago, maybe that tells us something about the cars that are made now? Everyone else can keep their Japanese SUV's,I would rather own one of these little gems any day.

My wife and I bought a new silver, all leather 318tiA in 1998. It's a US model which was not popular here in LA. It now has 66,000 plus original miles, still looks nice, and we still drive it daily. Not a fast car, it's as reliable and ecomical as our older Corolla but still drives like a true sports coupe/hatchback.

If it was a succes, then why didnt they continue with this ?
Or is that the reason why the Rover-i mean 1 series came to life?

Yep the 1 series is the official successor to the compact series.

@@SSFproductions1 it is in a way!
I was lucky to drive a e30 M3 for a full day on the windy roads of the Harz Mountains in Germany and it definitely is comparable.
Of course the handling of the e30 was a little bit sharper because of it’s intended use, but they definitely have the same feel in corners.
Biggest difference is that you really have to rev the e30 M30 because of its 4 cylinder, while the 2.5 I6 of the compact has more low end torque but less high end power.
You shift more in the e30 but that dogleg box feels just amazing!
It’s so good to have all the „go gears“ inside of the H-pattern!

I have a E46 330Ci convertible, 6spd MT - my weekend car which gonna bring happines even to my future kids and grandkids. I drive also BMW X6 and other modern cars including my hunting Mitsubishi car. They are much more comfy but damn, I love these old school bimmers. Using 100oct + low milage oil interval and they are extremely reliable. Mine conertible has 310,000km on the clock. Biggest expenditure ? Dual mass fly wheel at 286k km - it was still original one. Even exhaust is original. I have imported car from Switzerland.

BMW where known for making one off special cars. Why didn’t they put into production this M3 compact and other’s such as the e36 touring M3 and also the e31 M8.
Come on BMW, make legend’s, stop following the crowd.
Let’s make the video’s longer please. I keep trying to see what car’s are in the background. 😀👍🏻

We bought a 318ti sport in 2000, to jump from the integrale to the ti wasn't a hardship. It was a joy. A quick fun car.

I owned a stock (used) 318ti compact with the 1.8-litre-engine. Of course i removed the back seats and the ac s i didn't have a child or any friends. It's still my benchmark concerning fun, trunk space, interior design and fuel consumption. I miss these times and cars so hard. I just ordered a puma ST, which carries more of the "ti spirit" than the actual BMWs.

That e36 is my dream car, I have two 318ti M42, and M44 both open-air top sliding folding roofs.. and you can’t help but love that car for some reason sometimes more than my In-line 6 bimmers
