      I should really do another video of the Larrivee; now that I put .10's on it, it really opened it up!! It sounds incredible now, much different than when I recorded this video. My buddy leant it to me (and I let him borrow one of my Martin D15's), but I have since purchased it from him. When I recorded this video, it was strung with .12's, which really inhibit the sound. I will have to do a video on just the Larrivee...

    Fascinating demo done extremely well. I almost didn't click on it, as on paper, I have "superior guitars" from Martin and Larrivee. I clicked anyway, and listened on my laptop. At first, I discounted the Cort as too thin sounding, I really liked the Larrivee (I always do) and though I am a Spruce topped Martin guy, I preferred the OM-15 above the other two. Then, I decided to listen again a few times through high quality earphones. Wow, what a difference. Now, I am shocked at the projection, clarity and tone of the Cort. The Larrivee just sounds great as they always sound. The Martin has that Martin richness, but I find it to be more of a niche guitar. I prefer each guitar for different applications. As a match for my vocals, the Martin wins, hands down. As a recording or fingerstyle solo guitar, I'd hate to live on the difference between the Larrivee and the Cort. As a 30 year fanboy of Martin and Larrivee, I never thought I'd say that. I don't even know what Corts cost, but I know Larrivees are among the best bang for the buck acoustics available.

    • @JackTheRabbitMusic
      @JackTheRabbitMusic  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, thanks, man. You must have a really nice collection! I still love the Larrivee, and have since sold the Martin, but still have the Cort! There was something about the Cort guitars (their “Gold series” particularly) that I thought was kinda special the first time I played it. The fit and finish is as good as any Martin I have played, and it sounded really nice in my room. I “replaced” the OOO15 Martin with a Yairi FYM66HD...a much nicer instrument, all around. I thought the Martin sounded the “woodiest”, but also more “dead” and “thumpy” sounding. I like my guitars to feel more lively and be more responsive than the Martin was. The Cort definitely comes to life, and almost plays itself. The Martin gave more of a fight, even though it wasn’t hard to play at all. You’re right about the different applications. The Cort ran about a third of the price of what the Larrivee and the Martin cost. It is really a beautiful instrument, and punches above its weight class.
      Thanks for the comments, and for watching! 🐰💙🙏🎸🎶🤝✌️

      @@JackTheRabbitMusic I have better guitars than I deserve. I am primarily a songwriter and a mediocre player. My Holy Grail keeper is my Martin OM-42, which is nothing like your 15. Your 15 reminds me of my 000-17 SM, though it is a Spruce top model. Probably my best guitar for my vocals is a custom D-35, but dreads have become very difficult for me to play due to shoulder issues. You make yours sound better than I do mine. Thanks again. Interesting review.

      Hello! Yeah, the Cort is a really beautiful instrument. It feels great in the hand, as the finish work is very nice. They paid a lot of attention to the details of the Cort, and it looks, sounds, and feels like a much higher priced boutique instrument. The only reason I did these Cort videos is because I couldn’t believe how good they are, and wanted to share my experience with others. I bought all my Cort guitars sight unseen, and online. Hey, great comparison. Do you know how the Larrivee compares to the Martin when played with a thumb-pick? I mostly play boom-chick Tommy Emmanuel style and Larrivee is half the price of the Martin where I live but I can't try them out cause all the stores are closed.

    • @JackTheRabbitMusic
      @JackTheRabbitMusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey dude, thanks for checking out the video; I appreciate the comment, too!
      I don't play with a thumb pick, or nails even, but I do have thumb picks here.
      What I can say is that I keep the Martin around JUST for recordings. It's really not a lively instrument in the room, and it's probably my least favorite to play. It would probably be ideal as a thumb picker, because the bass sounds very muted, but colorful. It doesn't have a lot of overtones or harmonics.
      The Larrivee can be hit a bit harder, has more headroom, and just responds "better" to the way I play. With a thumb pick, the Larrivee will produce more overtones than the 00015. I think you'd be happy with either instrument for your style, but if you can get one that's considerably less than the other in price, I would get the "cheaper" one. I personally gravitate towards the Larrivee as my main songwriting guitar. I haven't picked up the 00015 in months, because I haven't been recording much lately, and I really don't get as much pleasure from just sitting and playing it as I do from my other guitars. That's a long way to say that I would go with the Larrivee, lol!
      The sound, the flat radius of the fretboard, the quality of the craftsmanship, the wider nut, and overall setup of the Larrivee, IMHO, kills the Martin.

    • @JackTheRabbitMusic
      @JackTheRabbitMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hey Ed, thanks so much for watching and leaving a comment! The Flexblend is actually not a bad system at all. I have guitars with really good pickup systems (L.R Baggs Anthem, Cole Clark 3 way system), and the flexblend can absolutely hold its own. It's pretty easy to dial in a great plugged in tone. If I'm playing live, I always run all my guitars through an external preamp/vocal processor (BOSS VE-8), since I sing while I play. The A6 would be a great guitar for the stage. I tell people who like Taylor guitars to try these Cort A6/8's, because the pickup is better than Taylor pickups (IMHO), and the sound somewhat resembles a Taylor (It's closer in sound to a Taylor than it is to a Martin).
      I'll do a plugged in "shootout" once I get my studio space all set; I hope you'll stick around to watch that video! I'll be comparing L.R Baggs/Cole Clark/Flexblend, so you'll be able to hear them all, in isolation and in a mix.

      I haven’t tried the A6, but I do own the A8. I have a few vids with the A8 on my channel, if you want to hear it...it’s my main “stage” guitar. I can highly recommend the A8, but I am sure the A6 is really sweet as well. I got the A8 because I already had the D6 and the O6, and wanted something a bit different; I don’t own any other guitars with Pao Ferro back and sides.
      Anyway, I show the A8 in a few vids: one is in the Myrtlewood guitar video, and the other is comparing the three Gold series guitars I own. I actually don’t know of any other TH-cam folks who show off the A8, which is why I made the videos to begin with. These guitars are better than anything else in their price range, IMHO. I haven’t played anything under $1000.00USD that comes close to the value of the Corts.

My only concern, from a personally perspective, is the neck. Would you say it's slender or chunky? I'm struggling to play my dread these days because my hands are suffering. Do you think the Cort would be okay for me or is it still quite chunky? How does it compare to your others?

    • @JackTheRabbitMusic
      @JackTheRabbitMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much, Emma! Yeah, Cort makes some really great guitars! I'm gonna be doing a demo of all three of my Gold Series acoustics soon, because folks have been asking to compare them.
      I play the Martin dreadnoughts all the time, and the Cort necks are just slightly thinner. Cort has a 1.75" nut, which I prefer since I mostly play fingerstyle. If you are used to a narrower nut width, you may find it takes a little getting used to, but if you're playing a dreadnought now, it shouldn't be a big issue for you. The frets are outstanding...the best fretwork I've got on any guitar. I love the necks because they have a satin finish and are super comfortable to me. I would say somewhere in between a Martin and a Taylor. I hope that helps! 🐰❤🙏🎸🎵

The nut width sounds perfect, but what is the shape of the back of the neck like, if that makes sense? Is it really rounded and curvy or quite slender? Emma Bray Oh, thank you so much!! It’s more like a nice C shape. It’s not chunky, but not too thin, either. The three Cort gold acoustics I have here are the O6, D6, and the A8. They are all gloss finishes, and are beautiful. I have a baritone (Cort NdX) which is a satin finish, and that finish is very nice! The A8 has Pao Ferro back and sides, while the others have mahogany. I love the torrefied tops on these Gold series acoustics. They really open up the sound. I changed the strings, because I like Elixir coated strings, but the ones it comes with are really good strings. You do not have to do anything to it, all 3 of them came out of the shipping box already set up and ready to play! The tuners are great, as well. 🐰🌸✌️

      Hello! Thank you so much for checking it out! I had 13’s on the Larrivee. My buddy let me borrow it and that was what he had on it. I believe he said they were just plain old Ernie Ball or D’Addario strings...nothing fancy. I have since bought the guitar from him, and it now has Dean Markley Blue Steel 10’s. The Cort and the Martin both had Elixir phosphor bronze nanoweb 12’s. The Cort is slightly brighter, but it’s really well balanced and has a surprisingly good low end response. The fretwork on the Cort is superior to anything you will ever see in that price point. At basically 1/3 the price of the Martin or Larrivee, the Cort can hold up very well. I still have my 3 Cort gold series guitars, and I still love them. I am going to do another comparison between the Grand Auditorium size guitars I have:

I believe the OM-2 you are playing in this clip is also spruce with mahogany. The Larrivee costs about half the price of the Martin. I have a Martin D35 that I love, but I don’t own an OM and I don’t own a Larrivee. One major problem that I have is that there is no where local for me to play a Larrivee. • @JackTheRabbitMusic
      @JackTheRabbitMusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hello, and thanks so much for checking out the video!
      You are correct in saying my OM-02 is solid spruce over solid mahogany.
      I sold all of my Nazareth, PA built Martin guitars about a year after making this video. I will never own another Martin again (unless it’s an investment guitar), for a few reasons:
      1.Martin never tap tunes the tops and backs of their instruments, so it’s just the luck of the draw to find a “great one”.
      2. A large part of the cost of a Martin is the, “Martin”, logo on the headstock. You pay a high premium to get the Martin name, and I’m a player, not a collector.
      I sold the 000-15M I played in this video, and I “replaced” it with an Alvarez-Yairi FYM66HD.
      The Yairi and the Larrivee are now my main recording/daily player instruments now.
      I use my Cort Gold A8 and my Cort NDX Baritone for live performances.
      Anyway, to answer your question - No, I do not think that the Martin is twice as good as the Larrivee, but I do believe the Larrivee is twice as good (sounding/playability) as the Martin.
      Thanks again for the comment and for watching. I hope this helps you decide. Whatever you choose to do, I hope it brings you joy.

    Nice review. Well done. I suspect there's also an importance here that each of these three guitars are relative to price. I thought the Cort was 1st, Larivee 2nd, and Martin a distant 3rd as to full tonality, transparency and frequency range. So for the shopper looking at particularly this price range, it's a worthy comparison. That said, if we took the gloves off, and the Martin was a 000-28, or 000-28V, and the Larivee brought their top triple O, as would Cort, the results would be easily the opposite. The Martin triple O-28V, the Larivee, then the Cort. Remember, those highest end Martin, and Larivee versions have a greater edge in wood selection, hands on tuning of the soundboard, greatest care of neck to body joining, etc. Least we not forget at a steeper price. Taylor, resides near the Larivee. These are all beautiful guitars though. Of these three shown, and only these three, I might choose the Larivee as it would likely season best with age.
    Lastly, keep in mind it's wood, and wood of even the same type, and price, even model, vary some. Whatever you choose, make sure it is set up very well, and learn to do that yourselves. Cheers!

      thanks James! I've never played a Martin OOO-28 before. I'm sure they're one of the best! I love the Larrivee; It's been my #1 songwriting guitar since I bought it from my buddy. I didn't like it in this video, because my friend had .13's on it, which was choking out the top. I have .11's on it now, and it sings! I still have all 3 of these. The Cort comes in at $500.00 US. It's a pretty sweet guitar for that kinda money. I figured since I own these, why not do a little video? Lol! I had no idea this was going to get as many views as it has, but it's been really cool hearing from everyone. I really appreciate the comment, and I hope it will resonate with people looking to buy a new instrument! Thank you so much for checking out my video! Hey Brett! Honestly, I like the Larrivee the most. The Cort has a sound unlike either, and I find myself playing that a lot! The Cort has a bell like quality to it, and the harmonics are so sweet!! The Martin is...well...a Martin! It sounds GREAT when mic'd and recorded. I really can't choose one as a "best sound", because they are all awesome for different things. If I had to choose just one to play, I would pick the Larrivee, because of the way it feels in my hands. I like the Satin finish and it has a wider nut than the Martin does. The Cort and Larrivee have the same nut width...I prefer the 1 3/4" for the style I play.

      Wow, what a sweet collection you’ve got! That Cort Gold Edge will definitely hold it’s own with the rest of your instruments…they are extremely beautiful guitars. I don’t have the Edge, but I have got the A8 and the O6 (which is in this video). I sold my Cort Gold D6, but that was a great guitar, too.
      I love Larrivee because they are so underrated in most guitar circles. I’ve sold all 4 of my USA Martin’s, because they just take too much work to keep up- they are the most finicky of any guitar I have ever owned. I think Cort needs some more North American distributors, because they are also tough to get here in the states. I lucked out and got mine from a seller in Florida that deals with Cort. I got the, from Reverb.com. from “The Gator Tone”.
      I hope you can grab one of those Gold Edge guitars. I am sure you’ll love it!

      Hmmm...which is my favorite is a tough one. If I had to keep only one, I think the Larrivee. I find myself gravitating to that one when I write my songs. It's kinda special, and I bought it from a good friend, for a killer price.
      The Cort was actually comparable in price to what I paid for this Larrivee. I think that may have a little something to do with it too lol!
      The Martin is a Martin...not much more to say there haha! It's the one I reach for if I need an acoustic track in a production. It records extremely well, as do my D15's. Something about the natural compression and warmth of mahogany makes it a breeze to fit in a mix, or just record alone. It needs very little eq in post.

      Haha! Yeah, I'm trying to get the word out about Cort. I see so many channels discussing Taylor and Martin acoustics, but rarely see any Cort videos. It's been hard for me to research these, so I thought I'd just make my own video. Thanks so much for checking it out! 🐰🙏💜🎸🎶🤝✌

      @@JackTheRabbitMusic I think Cort builds a LOT of guitars for other brands and has agreed to pretty much stay out of the USA market so as to not be competition for them. Cort are really really popular in Asia.

    I'm biased towards the Larrivée. I currently have a D-09 and a D-09BZ (Brazilian rosewood), and I've a fair number of other Larrivées. The Cort is also a good sounding instrument in its own way. The Martin is a bit of an outlier, since it's all mahogany. An OM-18 would be the more comparable guitar.
    I've played some great Martins, but I like the Larrivée neck shape better. Most importantly to me, the Larrivées are a lot more guitar for the money...

    • @JackTheRabbitMusic
      @JackTheRabbitMusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wow...a D-09BZ?! That guitar must sound so great. I’ve never had the opportunity to play a Brazilian rosewood guitar before. The Larrivee is probably my most cherished instrument that I own...well, it’s in the top 3, anyway. You are right about the all mahogany Martin being a different animal, but I don’t own a Martin OM-18, and probably never will. Since making this video, I have sold all 4 of the USA Martin guitars that I had. I find there is a lot more to the guitar world than Martin, and I don’t drink the Martin kool-aide, lol! You’re correct in saying that Larrivee is a lot more guitar for the money. I also feel that way about both my Yairi, and my Yamaha guitars. Martin is great for collecting, but the others are amazing for players.
      Thanks so much for watching and leaving a comment! Have an awesome day!

      @@JackTheRabbitMusic Thanks for the reply. The D-09BZ is a very special guitar. It's a 2010 model that I bought used in the fall of 2014. I had a major medical issue and surgery. I bought the guitar as a treat to my self for getting through the first part of my recovery. It was a deal I couldn't pass up. I got it for less than the current cost of a new Martin HD-28. Larrivees are very underrated, and a lot of guitar for the money when compared to Martin, Taylor or Gibson.
      In the past I've also owned a D-03r, L-03 and an SD-60. I regret selling the D-03r. I've also played a lot of Larrivees at Dave's Guitar in LaCrosse, WI and Spruce Tree Music in Madison. The brand is very consistent from guitar to guitar. I don't think I've ever played one that was a dog. The Larrivees I've played have all been very good to excellent. I can't say the same for Martin or Gibson!
      By the way, I should have mentioned it in my first comment. Very nice job on the fingerstyle tune you played!

    The Larrivee has the deepest bottom end, with moderate highs,, the Martin has nice crisp sparkly highs , with a moderate bottom , the Cort sounds like an entry level acoustic , very shallow... If I had to pick one,, I’ll take the Larrivee,, 😉

      @kenz2756 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh really? the cort didn't have much bass but it sounded really good to me because the melody has a lot of clarity, it's very treble-ey. I didn't like the martin, too warm, probably because it's mahogany. As it happens, i think the cort is quite a bit cheaper than the rest, it's about 600$.

    • @JackTheRabbitMusic
      @JackTheRabbitMusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't play the Martin "for fun"...it's strictly for recording purposes. I actually don't like the sound of the Martin in the room, but it shines in recordings with good mics. I used my iPad for this video, if I recall correctly. 🤔 I may have had a $20 lavalier mic from Amazon plugged into the iPad though.
      Anyway, the Cort sounds so good in person. It definitely isn't as warm as the Larrivee, but the note separation is outstanding, and when I sing with it, it's very complimentary. If I had to rank these instruments, the Cort would be #2 to the Larrivee, but not by much!! They're very different guitars, and have very different voices.
      I don't agree that the Cort sounds like a beginner guitar - it definitely doesn't sound that way in person. Maybe I'll do a better recording, now that I have my studio all set up...?

      It’s a different sound, and I think they all sound good. The Cort was just surprising because it sounded way better than what it cost at the time, but I am fairly sure they’ve gone up by a few hundred dollars since then.
      I still own the Larrivee, and ai love it…actually, I got another Larrivee, which hasn’t been shown yet here on my channel.
      I sold the Martin, and every other Martin I’ve owned. I don’t like the way Martin guitars feel to play, but they do sound nice.
      My favorite is still the Larrivee, though.
