The Guards are actual servicemen who do their tour of duty just like any other soldier.
From what I remember, they get selected after a few years service, something along those lines?
When Britain is engaged in a conflict half of each guards division stays in the UK to guard the Royal palaces while the other half is usually deployed.

@@ThatGuyRBY Usually soldiers fresh out of training are sent to the ceremonial company of each guards regiment (i.e. Nijmegen company of the Grenadier guards) and they protect the royal residences for an allotted time, I think its usually a year.

Going back a few years the Duke of Kent (the Queen's cousin) was a career officer in an armoured regiment that was about to be posted to the Six Counties on dismounted security role duties. As a result he was obliged to resign his commission, much against his wishes, apparently he was not a happy chappy.

I think it largely stems from their self-sense of superiority and that they are more valuable and their privileged lifestyle gives them a sense of being immune. One thing about our Royalty they never dismiss putt of hands and have actually served even during wars. This there is mutual respect. When I see and hear Mr Trump I here sincerity and genuine concern which must be a refreshing change to you Americans; for those that recognise it anyhow.

How often does a President talk to members of the honor guard. Charles looks a little out of place/uncomfortable...I guess I could be wrong but all other times (that I’ve observed) I just see the dignitaries walk by.
Mind you, the "honour guard" are full of active service members who have been in combat overseas
