  • Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer went head to head in the first TV debate before the general election on 4 July.
    Subscribe to Guardian News on TH-cam ► bit.ly/guardianwiressub
    The debate was dominated by a row on taxes after the prime minister repeatedly told the audience Keir Starmer would raise families' taxes by £2,000. Starmer responded by calling this nonsense. The two party leaders went on to debate immigration, the Rwanda scheme, funding the NHS and what their plans are to help the younger generation.

      Because the real answers are unpalatable to the people who it would actually benefit. NHS underfunded, Councils underfunded, national services in general underfunded? The money has to come from somewhere, which is why tax cuts are insane. The only people who benefit long term from tax cuts are the rich who own private companies. This is why there are oligarchs in Russia after the fall of the USSR.

    Appalling moderation. Sunak was allowed to spout this fictitious £2000 claim (concocted with figures put forward by conservative advisors btw - not labour policies) and any time Starmer tries to respond it was “we’ll talk about tax later”. Ridiculous.

    • @dave_dw34
      @dave_dw34 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Exactly. All I could see this entire debate was Rishi Sunak's spiteful little face, constantly shouting, interupting, lying, making false accusations like a school playground bully - the moderator totally failed to control him - but the moment Starmer went to speak she raised her pen and kept saying "ok, time is up". Absolutely painful to watch.

      @@dave_dw34 Yes the way Rishi is behaving in this video clip is somewhat disgusting. He's a sitting Prime Minister he should be acting in a much more professional manner and certainly shouldn't be flat out lying
      The claims he made about Labour's tax policies are completely FALSE and there is plenty of documentation that proves that. Starmer really really should have just started saying repeatedly "YOU JUST LIED, THAT ISN'T TRUE"

    • @dave_dw34
      @dave_dw34 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@babybluesky9238 Spot on. I also think Starmer should have requested a pause in the debate to question why Sunak is being allowed to not only shout - but to ask the questions! It's supposed to be the audience and moderator asking questions, not Sunak.
      Any serious moderator would have fact checked the £2000 tax claim, and told Rishi, live on air, that he is lying and his claim is false.
      Watching how antagonistic and bully-like Rishi was during this exchange , it's worrying to think this is the leader of our country - and has made me hope even more than i already did that they face a total wipeout in the general election.
