    VFA-103 Jolly Rogers fly the F/A-18F . Squadron used to be VF-84 until they merged with VF-103 and when the Tomcats were retired they became VFA-103.

    I bought this kit for the exact same reason at Michael’s. Only difference is that the kit has dropped to $18, so I only spent $9 on it.
    I haven’t put a plane model together since I was a kid, but I figured for $9...why not!

    I built this Super Hornet model. Went together fairly good. One thing I hated was the main gear ‘D’ mounts, instead of just a round hole. Bad design!!!!

    Just as an FYI, NJ is not New Jersey, it means the plane is part of the Pacific fleet.

    Jolly Rogers did serve on the Eisenhower also the Harry S Truman this last year. The NJ doesn't mean New Jersey it's just a code that tells you what their unit and base objective is. Served with the Jolly Rogers on Inherent Resolve deployment, great group of men and women. Sure they would be honored to have models built after their aircrafts.

    I bought this at Michaels about 4 years ago with a 60%off coupon, I paid $12. I am glad I waited to start building it because my level of skills for building has increase dramatically in the last few years. 2 years ago I got the Top gun Maverick version with different decals. Great kit for the price!

    I just built this kit awhile back- fantastic build, little to no seam clean up, amazing detail- and very much worth the money. Being an ex Navy sailor, i put a little more detail into this kit than what was in the box. A few of the parts may give you issues, like the seam around where the forward nose section and fuselage meet. I used very little putty to fill gaps. I will caution first time builder this kit does have quite a number of really small parts you'll need tweezors and super glue to attach. I was a little disappointed in the load out for this kit, it would have been nice to have a little variance in onboard weapons- what you see in the box is unfortunately all you get. Still, quite an impressive build in the end!.

      I really enjoyed this kit- it ws pretty error free for the most part, again, a few fit issues- nothing too nasty that cant't be worked around. Thank YOU good sir for a wonderful video, and ll the amazing kits you review, they bring back a lot of great memories! Happy modeling!

    This was a nice box opening. I can say for the haters, that if you buy a $20 kit, you are getting what you pay for. I usually expect to run into problems when building a low end kit. Ive never bought a high end kit, but Im sure they are pleasant to do. Nice video once again.

    • @hpiguy
      @hpiguy  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The haters even hate on $150 kits with near perfect detail ("But, but, the radome is 1/100000000000 scale millimeter off from proper size, this kit is garbage!!!!). They just want to hate and find fault with anyone and everything. It's the same person that thumbs down my videos the instant they are online. Not even time to watch the video, instant thumbs down to my videos and others videos.
      We just gotta let the haters hate man. You and I and the other adults will go build kits, any kits, and have a blast doing it. We're model makers, they are just whiners that rarely build anything.

    • @DaveWrightKB9MNM
      @DaveWrightKB9MNM 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am currently building this kit. I’m not a pro by any means, but I have built quite a few $20 kits that have gone together easier than this. The seams aren’t fitting, nothing seems to line up and I’ve done a lot of sanding. More than I have ever done on a model. I expected a better kit than what I got because Revell makes great products.

    IT is a very decent kit i have built two of them i have a third in my stash and the rivet counters hate it as a matter of fact they hate every kit. and there is plenty of after market

    • @hpiguy
      @hpiguy  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hahaha, right? The rivet counters hate everything and if you'll notice they hardly build at all, they just whine and cut down everyone else's work. I'm too busy making models to nit pick about every single rivet, curve, panel line I guess.

    • @Joe8648
      @Joe8648 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's exactly what they do. I'll do my own research on a plane then ill fix what need's to be fixed if need be.
      but i have been building sense i was very young have 20 to 30 years of build experience but i build for the enjoyment of it. i dont get really serious unless it's contest time even then i never really win anyway cause the rivet counter's all way's get picked to be the judges more often than not as long as people like what i do it's enough winning is not really important. i go for the fun and enjoy the show enter my kit's and enjoy real modeler's company.

    Hey Chris...i just picked up two of these kits from Hobby Lobby...to go with my two f18 A blue angle sceams...after doing some research...found out the blue angle team will start using the F18E Super Hornet in 2021, at their air shows, because of the aging f18 A and B. So im going to build them as the new blue angle sceams using aftermarket decals...ill post pics on your page when their finished!...love your channel! Thx!

    The F-14 Jolly Rogers squadron was VF-84, usually partnered with VF-41 Black Aces, most notably off the USS Nimitz and used (only VF-84, which almost lost an aircraft during filming, and has that incident actually in the movie in one scene) in the movie "The Final Countdown" with Kirk Douglas as Nimitz CO.
    Someone further down the comments is incorrect that VF-103 and VF-84 "merged together"; US Navy squadrons don't merge -- they're either established or disestablished. During the Clinton Administration, DOD funding was cut, so many Reagan military expansions (Airwing 10/CVW-10) and established units/squadrons were disestablished. Such was VF-84's fate (along with VF-1, VF-21, VF-24, VF-33, VF-51, VF-11, VF-114, VF-142, VF-191 [CVW-10], and VF-194 [CVW-10]). However, the VF-103 Sluggers appealed to the Navy for their squadron to adopt the name and logos of VF-84; I guess the Navy MUST maintain a skull & crossbones squadron.
    VF-103 flew the F-14 for a while with this change before eventually transitioning to the F-18F Super Hornet. What is also a little weird is that you'd think all F-14 squadrons would've transitioned to 2-seat F-18Fs ( a 2-seat place to/for a 2-seat plane), but this isn't true (VF-14 for example). Semi-likewise (weird), some single-seater squadrons were transitioned to 2-seat F-18Fs (VA-22 to VFA-22 for example). And then some A-6 squadrons have had their names given to (single-seater) Super Hornet squadrons, such as VA-35 to VFA-35 Blue Blasters.
    So, you can tell what time frame a F-14 with skull & crossbones is based on whether it's a VF-84 or a VF-103 bird, and all F-18 skull & crossbones will be from VFA-103.
    Also, FYI IT IS NOT A "NAS (NASS)"; while the USAF has its air bases, the United States Navy calls their airfields Naval Air Stations, hence N.A.S. or NAS. The standard funny Fleet joke on this is that when flying cross country, Navy aircraft will ALWAYS try to stop over at an Air Force base -- the joke goes: Congress gives the USAF and the Navy the same amount of money to build an air base and a NAS. With their money, the Air Force builds all of the support buildings and facilities (commissary, exchange, BEQs, BOQs, etc), while the Navy builds all the primary structures/construction (runways, taxiways, hangars). Both the Navy and the Air Force need more money to finish their installations, and have to go back to Congress for more money. When the Air Force makes their additional money request, they state they need the dollars for the runways, taxiways, and hangars, so the Congress MUST give them more money (and does). When the Navy goes back for more money, Congressmen ask, "What for?", and the Navy states for all the support structures and facilities (housing, etc.). Congress says, "But you've already got what you need to fly planes," and, maybe, might give the Navy enough extra money for some cruddy Quonset huts. Hence, when looking for great overnight "accommodations", Naval flight crews will ALWAYS choose an airbase over a NAS!
    Also, while your overview of the kit is very good, other videos from modelers who have completed the kit complain that many key fitting areas are a "bear" to get right. Moreover, I am very taken aback, but very grateful your video shows that this kit has such a limited decal sheet; I would've expected any responsible model kit maker to have also included markings for a Fleet squadron -- VFA-122 is the (lowly) F-18 RAG!!!

    • @ChrisNobodySpecial
      @ChrisNobodySpecial 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the info. My son is flying T-45s and in the 'Strike' pipeline. I just bought this model to build as a present for him when and if God and the Navy are willing, he officially gets his wings. He's a 'good stick', is doing great, top of his class, but I learned you never count your chickens before they are hatched; you never take checkrides and instructor pilots for granted, one checkride at a time.
      So VFA-122 is a replacement air group (RAG). That's perfect for my purposes because then there would be a high probability he will join this squadron down the road.
      Thanks again for your info. I'm a little better informed because of it.
