Kelley was in all guys band except her taking on the vocal…she even covered Boyd Rice song live. If you listen to Pod, it is noticeable they are influenced by British post punk rather than American all female bands at that time and Josephine’s contribution also made the album sound transatlantic. Besides, Kelley is hardly proficient but has the distinctive way of playing the guitar and that made them original. The Breeders are on another level and they shouldn’t be lumped in with the prefabricated grunge garbages catered to MTV.
Kelley didn’t play on Pod. She didn’t join the Breeders until the Safari EP. Tanya Donnelly of Throwing Muses/Belly was the original guitarist (the one on Pod).

As girl power reached dizzying heights through the '70s, suddenly the number of all female bands faded to oblivion in the '80s, with only a few making a major breakthrough with audiences. However, the punk scene in the '80s helped many female bands pave the path of success. Through the '80s and '90s, a significant number of all female bands emerged in the realms of mainstream rock, pop, and R&B, with many enjoying chart-topping success. Scarlet Question: What ever happened to Nickey Barclay from FANNY? Answer: After leaving Fanny, Nickey Barclay released a solo album 'Diamond in a Junkyard.' She also wrote a song (Solid Gold) and played keyboards for Keith Moon on his 1976 album 'Two Sides of the Moon.' After Moving to the UK, she formed the Nickey Barclay Band in the 1980s with musicians Dave Ball, Wilgar Campbell, and Lou Martin. The band performed at venues in London. Question: Why is the first question in an interview with female members of a band - "What's it like to be female members of a band?" Media: Could the answer be that we are "predictable" and "boring". As you can see the Breeders were not particularly special when it comes to being female - they however were good at creating catchy pop grunge tunes that those who liked Nirvana would also like as well.
Ive always said kurt should have hooked up with kim..they looked cool together. And i bet she would have been good for him. Instead of that disqusting skell..smh..i had a huge crush on kim back in the 90s when i was a young lad😅 breeders are a great band. 👍🏻🎸
Kurt was with Mary Lou Lord, Kristen from Hole (RIP)) & some other women who will not be mentioned. He liked the ladies and apparently they liked him. Not insulting him,he simply appealed to women even in plutonic relationships.
@@slacktoryrecords4193 You say that like it's a bad thing, tough guy? Are you bitter and jealous that I'm even more bitter and jealous? It's called busting someone's chop tough love humor having a bad laugh at a bad joke. Lighten up.
Female manics fans dont bother getting sore about JDB generalising about women just the same. The fact is both bands probably ran into gendered boring, because they had all the besties spark they wanted, in the band.
Says the sheltered, insecure lowlife with bad taste. I know current music sucks because I HAVE explored it for years. You probably like greta van fleet and think that current hip hop is good.
@christine w What are "ya" talkin' abt, "ya" thin skinned fangirl muppet?! I bloody *LOVE* pearl garden and soundjam! Are you as smugly pleased with yourself as the verbose soccer mum?
Once gals became the forefront of indie rock,it became politically correct, safe, boring, and dull. Women aren't designed to be leaders. All of the "female bands" had 1 good LP then imploded. The term "Grunge" didn't exist until Jan 1992.

Yes, regards to their parents. MmmmHmmm

I met Kim and Kelly in sf amoeba records they are the two most beautiful respectfully humble people I've ever met in the music industry.
yeah they are awesome. I have never talked to Kim (it's my dream!) but I have talked to Kelley and Josephine after a really small bar show in austin. they were cool
I LOVE YOU FOREVER KELLY!!!
The Breeders are easily one of the most original bands of the 90's.
10000000% ❤❤❤❤❤
Love the Breeders!
my band got to open for Kim's band once...and backstage she asked me for a cigarette and i do not smoke but my wife did at the time so i reached in and grabbed the cigs and there was only one left...I gave it to Kim...my wife got mad at me for giving away her last cig and i said, "when, Kim Deal ask me for a cig, I give her one"
Love hearing anecdotes like this. I totally idolize Kim Deal, but it’s stories like yours that make them seem more human. Less intimidating 😁
Great story! That would be a HUGE honor to me, to open for them!
I saw them play at slims before Last Splash was released, I remember they played a brand new song for their upcoming album called The Invisible Man and the whole show Kelly kept fucking up, and would stop in the middle of songs, and let's make no mistake, Josephine is a fucking pro, and she had this look of "Come on Kim, what the fucking fuck?!" and Kim had this look of "I know, I'm sorry, she's my sister" - all that said it was a great fucking show, they played 2 shows back to back, some dude traded me to go in to the first show, and me and my friends watched that show from outside, then went in to watch it again and it still fucking rocked. I've seen them several times since and Kelley has obviously learned to keep up, seriously, one of those bands...if the come around GO, they NEVER disappoint
I saw them a couple times at Slims back then. What a great time it was for music.
I love Wiggs!
We traded tapes in the 80’s, that was the only way to hear the Best new bands, I heard Driving on 9 on a tape, and it was so different from the other Breeders music, just like Exene singing Poor Little Critter in the Road by the Knitters, you couldn’t look this up in Wikipedia, or early 80’s Cure, EATB, the radio was playing hair metal bands for the masses. Kurt just caught the wave.
Still believe the final decision of Kelley joining the Breeders came form Ivo of 4AD after listening to the Last Splash demo tape. Kelley’s playing style shares the same jagged edge sound of the label mates like Rema Rema, the Birthday Party and the Wolfgang Press. I could easily imagine Ivo likes Kelley as a guitarist.

Although only a few all-female rock bands managed to strike major record deals with recording companies, a number of bands promoted their music independently at local gigs and concerts.

Question: What ever happened to Nickey Barclay from FANNY?
Answer: After leaving Fanny, Nickey Barclay released a solo album 'Diamond in a Junkyard.' She also wrote a song (Solid Gold) and played keyboards for Keith Moon on his 1976 album 'Two Sides of the Moon.' After Moving to the UK, she formed the Nickey Barclay Band in the 1980s with musicians Dave Ball, Wilgar Campbell, and Lou Martin. The band performed at venues in London.
Question: Why is the first question in an interview with female members of a band - "What's it like to be female members of a band?"
Media: Could the answer be that we are "predictable" and "boring".
As you can see the Breeders were not particularly special when it comes to being female - they however were good at creating catchy pop grunge tunes that those who liked Nirvana would also like as well.

The Deal sisters have to be related to Katherine Keener.

I want to go to McGuffy's.
Ive always said kurt should have hooked up with kim..they looked cool together. And i bet she would have been good for him. Instead of that disqusting skell..smh..i had a huge crush on kim back in the 90s when i was a young lad😅 breeders are a great band. 👍🏻🎸
Same bro
I think he should have stuck with Mary Lou Lord. I like knowing there's a guitar out there that she gave to both Elliott Smith and Cobain.
She still can’t play (Kelley) but I love her and her raw guitar is inspiring.
She's better now
She plays what’s needed and she does have her own playing style, which I’ve always enjoyed.
and she’s always smiling and enjoying playing. 😊
true dat ; )

I didn't know Josephine Wiggs was British. Nice
Really?

Her accent doesn’t really come through when she’s playing bass.

Wasn't Kelly Deal in an all guy band?
It was called "The Amps". But it was Kim Deal and also Jim.
Kelley deal 6000 : all guy band in a 90's...with Kelley's boyfriend in it!
She actually is now lol she's a touring member of Protomartyr!
Men are boring. We're too busy inventing building working and innovating every facet of life. Without Men they'd collapse within 5 hrs.
@@E.C.2 "We"? Bitch stop glomming onto the accomplishments of others. Flexing on women with stuff capable men did and you have not , so alpha lmao
"Cos guys are boring"... Brilliant.
Just as boring as wahmen.
those pics of Cobain and Kim makes you wonder what could have been if they had met before he got married.
Kurt liked his women heroin addicted
Kurt was with Mary Lou Lord, Kristen from Hole (RIP)) & some other women who will not be mentioned. He liked the ladies and apparently they liked him. Not insulting him,he simply appealed to women even in plutonic relationships.
Mmmm, the Deal sisters. I was in high school in the early 90s. Yeah buddy.
is there a part 2? where can i see the rest of this interview?
2 over the hill liberal soccer mom's talk about the 1 good album they recorded over 3 decades ago. Woo-Hoo sounds like a party!
@@E.C.2You sound like a bitter Daytonite envious of their success. “Soccer moms”? You know nothing about these ladies.

Female manics fans dont bother getting sore about JDB generalising about women just the same.
The fact is both bands probably ran into gendered boring, because they had all the besties spark they wanted, in the band.
Are guys boring?
I don't think we are. Whatever Kim..😒
Edit: also she was in a band with guys, so that was pretty mean.

Get out of your tiny, insecure bubble. Explore.
Says the sheltered, insecure lowlife with bad taste. I know current music sucks because I HAVE explored it for years. You probably like greta van fleet and think that current hip hop is good.

Are you as smugly pleased with yourself as the verbose soccer mum?
LoL Great comment. Hope she doesn't have a Son.
Once gals became the forefront of indie rock,it became politically correct, safe, boring, and dull. Women aren't designed to be leaders. All of the "female bands" had 1 good LP then imploded. The term "Grunge" didn't exist until Jan 1992.
One thing the Breeders are not is dull and safe...and most grunge was depressing crap.
@@markeggins890The term grunge was invented in a corp board room. No one in the underground had herd of that term until 1992.
