you forgot that there`s no sales tax. when I visit family is Vancover it`s the sales tax that always gets me because I`m thinking something is so cheap but then it`s actually not!

@@JetLagWarriors I lived in HK for a while back in 2018, you would be lucky to find a standard 1 bedroom for less than 2k CAD, and that would be pretty far away from the city center. Many people literally live in cages (劏房)

Hong Kong has prices for the entire spectrum of society. Wellcome is one of the cheapest supermarkets. Go to Citi Super to get your mind blown - watermelons costing $2000+, Scottish smoked salmon $700+, Japanese strawberries $300+. List goes on. Also, for locals, it's often cheaper to actually eat out than cook at home.
@@JetLagWarriors cheap local HK style food - try Cafe De Coral or Fairwood (always has English menus and photos). I recommend the char siu/duck rice, pork belly rice, baked pork chop with cheese, HK style curry. Wash it down with a hot/cold HK style tea. Other cheap eats would be these small family owned 'cha Chan tengs' that do won ton noodles.

However, as a HongKonger, I find prices in Canada (To be more specific I'm in Toronto) more unaffordable than Hong Kong...Especially you need to pay tax for certain items while in Hong Kong you don't need to pay tax for buying any stuff from stores or dining out Supermarkets are often more expensive (certainly there're some good deals from time to time), I guess that's why most people in Hong Kong actually buy their groceries in wet markets (and wet markets sell fresh vegetables and meat)
Food prices in Hong Kong are not expensive because mainland China sends a lot of agricultural products in, and what is expensive is mainly store rents. Of course, there's a problem with this because the store rent is already expensive, so the locals have become numb to the prices, and most of the produce imported from mainland China is of higher quality and used to make more money. This leads to a vicious cycle.

I am from germany and apples grow here everywhere, we pay like 2 USD for 1kg and 4 USD for 1kg premium apples. It is crazy how expensive apples are in other countries. :D
So it's not fair to say HK or sg expensive bcos apples expensive. Bananas go for a song in sg. I'm not sure what fruit to compare with in HK. I guess whatever is in season in China. I'm waiting for mid season winter dates.
There are a lot of foreign workers, and most of the housekeepers are now from the Philippines and Indonesia. That may explain the language on the packaging.
I lived in HK for over 14 yrs and loved every minute of it. Venture to Taikoo Shing. Jusco and Uny, Japanese Grocery stores/Dept store was always fun to shop at. Tiny bit more expensive. Wet markets and local grocery stores are a little bit cheaper especially after you forge meaningful relationships with shop owners. These wet markets also have small cooked food stalls that serve some delicious food at affordable prices. One in North Point and Happy Valley are the best imo. Private kitchens also serve up some delicious fare. Plenty of them on HK Island. Take a ferry to one of the Islands and try the seafood which you pick and the kitchen will cook it up for you. Delish and affordable. Enjoy HK!

Wellcome is one of the local supermarkets here in Hong Kong, maybe you can do a comparison video with another famous higher level/brand supermarket called City Super, which offers more internaitonal groceries, located at Tsim Sha Tsui's Harbour City (which should be the closest store from where you are staying) FYI, Hong Kong has a lot of maids from the philippines and Indonesia, so maybe thats why the snack was written in Indonesian. Hong Kong as you know, has a lot of people in a limited amount of space, so we are already used to the waiting and looking around in between aisles.
I think City Super prices will blow their minds! I only go there for certain imported items that has a nostalgic effect on me.... like Molson Canadian beer, lol. Actually, I didn't get the Molsons. They also had Alexander Keith's. which was what I drank back in Canada.
Why do you want to do a comparison with city super? Majority of people don't shop there. Every city has high end supermarkets but most people don't shop there. What's the point??? Also why don't you ask for a wet market comparison? Kai bo? 360? DS? So many other options are even cheaper???
You are going to wrong place to buy stuff, it is just more convenient to go o a supermarket but there are lots of places in Hong Kong that sells snack foods for alot cheaper. I guess if you are a tourist you wouldn't know where to go. I suggest DS or Dai Sun for snacks like chips and chocolate, actually they have lots of snacks at reasonable price. You may also want to try 759 or 360 degrees there are plenty of them around the city. I agree with you cheese is expensive in HK. Another suggestion is the wet markets vegetables are cheaper and fresher than from the supermarket.
I am hongkonger living in Canada. It is surprise to heard losing weight in HK😆Maybe you need a local people introduce the good place for grocery shopping. Local HK people usually buy food in wet market. The food is more fresh and cheap than supermarket. We usually buy drinks , cup noodles and snacks in supermarkets. Compare to Canadian supermarkets, I think HK price is much cheaper and also without tax.
Glad you had a good time in HK! The brand 'Meadows' is actually owned by this supermarket's parent company, so it's at every corner in the store and always cheaper. And it's weird that this store didn't have Head & Shoulders. I see it quite often in many other shops.

Although using oliver oil is more common in Hong Kong, it still not popular in Hong Kong families. It is because the price is expensive and they cannot cook in high tempature, especaily for the fry and deep fry. Therefore, Hong Kong people tend to use peanut oil. And the oliver oil alway used by the middle-class which the food habits to be more westernized, for example, using oliver oil in salad, and the income of these families can afford the higher price of the oliver oil.
This is the smaller size supermarket, usually located like the "corner store" in US/Canada. There are much bigger supermarket which are at large residential estate. And there is "Citysuper", a chain wtih stores open in the heart of business distincts which is truly "international" in the stocks.

There are many much larger Wellcome with a lot more selection of stock. Just about 150m away, there is a bigger Wellcome on Austin Road, right across the Kowloon Park entrance. I know, I live on Jordan Road. Then not to mention there are many mega stores Wellcome across the city. (I guess you know that. I wrote this for the non local)

Dai Sang got some really cheap coffee from Lavazza, Liiy and Bialetti! Welcome and Taste are some of the middle of the road supermarkets comparable to Loblaws or IGA. There are some really high-end ones like City Super , The Great, Oliver's and some lower end ones like Dai Sang, but not necessarily worse! We do lack a Costco in HK but there's an Uncle Sam just newly opened in Shenzhen, so that opens up another option of grocery shopping!

I have to say that usually the supermarkets are the last place to buy anything as a local, id you have the time. Local markets are the go to place for cheap goods, different markets have different prices so you need to go around. Also there are some chain stores that are less big than a supermarket that has specifically cheap of some goods. But for many people who have less time, eating out is the cheaper option, considering the time it cost to gather cheap food from different places.
This grocery store relatively a relatively small selection of veggies fruit and meat,because there’s a big fresh market close by it’s about 7mins walk from there.ppl mostly go there for groceries because they have everything there and everything is fresh and way cheaper price.
To spend less for groceries and food in Hong Kong, comparison of prices at different places is needed. Supermarket prices are often marked up. If you buy the same thing in a wet market, like a pack of sausages, it may just cost half of the supermarket price.
And yeah in most developed countries tap water is clean, but the pipes are the problem. So I do not recommend anyone to drink tap water anywhere in the world, because most pipes are old or dirty because of small holes or from an repairing (a lot of dirt is getting into the pipes when they get repaired). My uncle works in this business here in germany, that is why I know never drink tapwater. I have my osmosis system what is cleaning the tapwater, what is pretty expensive on buying it, but after that you have clean water for many years.
Boiling is doing nothing? Most bad thing in tapwater has the same weight as water, so when you boil it or even distallete it, you do not get it purified. You need an osmose machine what has tiny mesh filters and charcoal filters what filters all the bad stuff out, but like I said they cost thousands of euros here in germany, so better to buy mineral water in the supermarket when you have an low budget. Easiest and best would be water in glassbottles, because plastic ones are bad to for your health. @@match2012
I see some comments here saying Wellcome is one of the cheaper supermarkets. Which in some ways is true (compared to chains like City Super, Taste, Marketplace, International, ThreeSixty, Olivers etc)...but there are a few chains like DS Groceries and especially Kai Bo that are even more affordable. Meats at Kai Bo are maybe the best prices you can find besides prices you might be able to get via haggling at wet markets.
6:38 Calbee is a famous brand of potato chips in Hong Kong, they have their own factory in Hong Kong to product potato chips, they always product new flavour of chips but the original flavour is the best!!!
compared to oz, some are roughly same prices, some slightly higher, some are (slightly) cheaper. so, in other words, i wouldnt say hk prices for grocery stuff (compared to oz prices) are a lot more expensive or are a lot cheaper. more or less the same. but things on special seem quite low price wise😅 i will visit hk in march , for 1st time 😊 hope to learn about the public transport in hk via ur video, and i wonder if mastercard is ok for tapping on buses there? and in mtr stations?
Those u found fair priced were either on sales or required bundle sales. But discounts r not a guarantee. The pack of pork under special discount looked stale in dark red colour. Given it is not supposed to be a frozen product, it is expected to be red/pink. The dark red color implied it was stored for a long time in non-frozen temp. Salaries r high only for civil servants, professional or managerial posts. Many grassroots r only talking about survival --living on meagre income. So if one is looking for quality of life but without a deep pocket, hk is not a wise choice.
I've seen that in general, meat is more expensive than vegetables and fish in Asia. Whereas, it's the other way around in the US and the west. this has been my observation so far. lived in HK and Nepal in the past. now living in the Uk. I've heard about US prices from people who have lived there
You’re right about tap water in HK but it is also is too clean to drink. It has chlorine in it and is recommended by the water department to boil water before drink

The prices are similar in the state. I always buy on sale or use coupon when I buy my groceries and my everyday items in the States. I avoid buying at regular price it is too expensive.
supermarket is expensive in general, the hotdog you filmed in this video, you can buy it half the price elsewhere. And I found the wellcome you are visiting is slightly more expensive than the one I go to. So yar, shop around.
This is not a good representation of HK supermarkets as this one is essentially a small "cornershop." There are dozens very large ones throughout the city: City Super, Great Food Hall (my favorite), 365, etc. with tremendous choice and products from all 4 corners of the globe.
Looks like you never went to any Chinese supermarket or Chinese restaurant in Markham or Richmond hill, even Missisauga has some good ones, you can find most of the things you saw here.
When was the last time you grocery shopped in Canada? The price comparison actually seems comparable if not cheaper in HK than Canada. Prices have skyrocketed. Also, you're comparing imported brands where it's made in North America and shipped overseas so it's more expensive there.
You can go to wet markets to get cheaper food. Those chips are not no name brand. They are Japanese brand chips 😂. Why would anyone tell you it's ok to drink HK tap water??? Unless you have a really high quality trustworthy RO water filter I wouldn't risk it.

well, in Canada family sized lays chips cost avg USD2 vs. HK at USD2.8. 1L Olive oil in Canada is 9USD vs. HK at 22USD. Eggs cost USD2 vs. HK at 2.8USD I find groceries in HK more expensive than Canada.

As a native hong konger, I don't think twice about buying food. I just told my wife to get whatever she wants. It is the mortgage or rent that kills.

If there's one thing i can say with certainty, it's that HK is cheaper than the UK and in some categories even cheaper than Romania.

Wellcome is one of the oldest supermarket brand in HK, it’s established around 60s in the last century!
I have to say that usually the supermarkets are the last place to buy anything as a local, id you have the time.
Local markets are the go to place for cheap goods, different markets have different prices so you need to go around.
Also there are some chain stores that are less big than a supermarket that has specifically cheap of some goods.
But for many people who have less time, eating out is the cheaper option, considering the time it cost to gather cheap food from different places.
This grocery store relatively a relatively small selection of veggies fruit and meat,because there’s a big fresh market close by it’s about 7mins walk from there.ppl mostly go there for groceries because they have everything there and everything is fresh and way cheaper price.

To spend less for groceries and food in Hong Kong, comparison of prices at different places is needed. Supermarket prices are often marked up. If you buy the same thing in a wet market, like a pack of sausages, it may just cost half of the supermarket price.
And yeah in most developed countries tap water is clean, but the pipes are the problem. So I do not recommend anyone to drink tap water anywhere in the world, because most pipes are old or dirty because of small holes or from an repairing (a lot of dirt is getting into the pipes when they get repaired). My uncle works in this business here in germany, that is why I know never drink tapwater. I have my osmosis system what is cleaning the tapwater, what is pretty expensive on buying it, but after that you have clean water for many years.
The habit of Hong Kong people is to boil the tap water first before drinking , therefore, I think it is strang that drink the tap water directly.
Boiling is doing nothing? Most bad thing in tapwater has the same weight as water, so when you boil it or even distallete it, you do not get it purified. You need an osmose machine what has tiny mesh filters and charcoal filters what filters all the bad stuff out, but like I said they cost thousands of euros here in germany, so better to buy mineral water in the supermarket when you have an low budget. Easiest and best would be water in glassbottles, because plastic ones are bad to for your health. @@match2012

I see some comments here saying Wellcome is one of the cheaper supermarkets. Which in some ways is true (compared to chains like City Super, Taste, Marketplace, International, ThreeSixty, Olivers etc)...but there are a few chains like DS Groceries and especially Kai Bo that are even more affordable. Meats at Kai Bo are maybe the best prices you can find besides prices you might be able to get via haggling at wet markets.

Hong Kong has a lot of domestic workers and most of them are from Indonesia and Phillipines. Hence, the many items you saw from those countries.

Those u found fair priced were either on sales or required bundle sales. But discounts r not a guarantee. The pack of pork under special discount looked stale in dark red colour. Given it is not supposed to be a frozen product, it is expected to be red/pink. The dark red color implied it was stored for a long time in non-frozen temp.
Salaries r high only for civil servants, professional or managerial posts. Many grassroots r only talking about survival --living on meagre income.
So if one is looking for quality of life but without a deep pocket, hk is not a wise choice.

I've seen that in general, meat is more expensive than vegetables and fish in Asia. Whereas, it's the other way around in the US and the west. this has been my observation so far. lived in HK and Nepal in the past. now living in the Uk. I've heard about US prices from people who have lived there

The prices are similar in the state. I always buy on sale or use coupon when I buy my groceries and my everyday items in the States. I avoid buying at regular price it is too expensive.

This is not a good representation of HK supermarkets as this one is essentially a small "cornershop." There are dozens very large ones throughout the city: City Super, Great Food Hall (my favorite), 365, etc. with tremendous choice and products from all 4 corners of the globe.
Looks like you never went to any Chinese supermarket or Chinese restaurant in Markham or Richmond hill, even Missisauga has some good ones, you can find most of the things you saw here.
Chinese Food in Richmond Hill and Chinatown are so so. It's not even close to the quality and taste in Vancouver
When was the last time you grocery shopped in Canada? The price comparison actually seems comparable if not cheaper in HK than Canada. Prices have skyrocketed. Also, you're comparing imported brands where it's made in North America and shipped overseas so it's more expensive there.

You can go to wet markets to get cheaper food. Those chips are not no name brand. They are Japanese brand chips 😂. Why would anyone tell you it's ok to drink HK tap water??? Unless you have a really high quality trustworthy RO water filter I wouldn't risk it.
