Tai O is an ancient village where only decendents of the villagers can live/build. The smells you encountered are drying fish, which are then used heavily in many cuisines. It is not a poor village, just very old.

You mentioned about the Hong Kong Museum of History, which is definitely worth spending 2-3 hours in. It is so interesting there. They don’t open on certain days, so keep in mind in case you plan to check it out!
Great content of HK! It is an interesting place indeed. 20 minutes will take you from the heart of the city to the beaches, and hiking trails that have amazing scenic views.

😊 Most of them are original inhabitants/aboriginals. They might not be rich but absolutely not poor😂. But they're elderly.
Actually my father was born in Tai O but he moved out and went to urban area looking for jobs in 1960's. Just like most young people at that time. My father is 85 years old now😊.
I enjoy watching your videos.❤ Thanks for visiting Hong Kong.

Awesome to see the other side of Hong Kong thru' your eyes. That cable car ride is
amazing, love the spectacular scenery along the journey. That fishing village is similar to Pulau Ketam of M'sia. In fact, it's a beautiful fishing village life.
Well, Steve lvana, you both have done another amazing job by showing us this interesting tour. Thanks a bunch.

For Macau, you can also feel that the casino areas and residential area are also two worlds. Macau residential area is much like counterparts of old Hong Kong, but with much slower pace.
BTW, If you really want to feel the poverty of Hong Kong, try the area around Sham Shui Po MTR station.

Steve & Ivana, you have made an absolute right choice to see one of the other sides of life in HK❤ Tai O offers stark contrast to the busy, fast paced and packed metropolis you get in downtown. It’s great for you to have walked up the surrounding hills that I as a local have not experienced. Trying out the shrimp paste pancake is tops among your adventurous spirit too 👍👍

You are so kind hearted Steve, but don’t worry. Most village people there are having a good life. They just enjoy keeping the houses and lifestyle as long as they can. Some of them have properties elsewhere , but the older generation particularly prefer staying there for retirement.

Had the best squid dish in Tai O! ❤️ One of the few fishing villages left in HKG, how most of HKG used to look like decades and decades ago. The pink dolphins there are adorable! ❤️ The other fishing area that I like is Sai Kung although it’s definitely “upmarket”.

HK villagers are rich😂😂 as people living in town, we always admire those living in villages. Don't get confused by the outlook of the houses, usually the owner's just keep it that way because they treat it like "family heritage". And many families, are doing international business 😂😂😂

You’re not wrong, but the conditions drastically differ based on region. In my hometown Zhejiang Province, villages are mostly refurbished . Some villagers even open up their houses as B&B.
West regions like Guizhou, Sichuan, Gansu province, villages are a bit more remote, don’t necessarily look as nice

Tai O is not a place suitable for tourism. Although it is free, the place is very basic and feels messy. Not worth visiting.
    大澳不是一個適合旅遊的地方。 雖然是免費的,但是地方很簡陋, 感覺很雜亂。 不值得參觀。
