I love the decaf Ristretto I have it with milk , I won't be re purchasing the decaf again after seen how they remove the caffeine from the beans very harsh chemicals.

Hi Snezana! Thanks for watching my new video. I was also surprised to learn how decaf is made. For a long time I thought decaf beans are regular beans that are roasted until burnt and the caffeine is removed. But they actually use chemicals to remove caffeine ....

@@AlleCeambur Thank you for making the videos I've learnt so much from you , yes I was surprised to never thought about how they made it decaf thought it was natural now I know lol. They did say they are working on harvesting a natural decaf bean so until then I won't be buying decaf again.

I read that Nespresso uses the Swiss Water Method for decaf 🤨

I read your comment and I remembered there were several methods for make decaf green beans. I remembered that one was 'Swiss water method' and the other one was using chemicals. The Lavazza decaf I regularly buy has a big sign (water droplet) mentioning it's done with Swiss water method. ChatGPT is very good in summarizing things so I just asked. And here is the response:
There are several methods for decaffeinating coffee, each involving different techniques to remove caffeine while preserving the flavor compounds as much as possible. As of my last knowledge update in January 2022, here are some common methods:
      1) Solvent-based methods:
Direct solvent method: Coffee beans are soaked in a solvent (usually ethyl acetate or methylene chloride), which bonds with the caffeine. The solvent is then removed, taking the caffeine with it.
Indirect solvent method: Similar to the direct method, but the beans are first soaked in water, and the water is then treated with a solvent to remove the caffeine.
      2) Water-based methods:
Swiss Water Process: Coffee beans are soaked in hot water to dissolve the caffeine. The water is then passed through a carbon filter that traps the caffeine molecules, leaving behind the coffee flavor compounds. The beans are then reintroduced to the decaffeinated water to reabsorb the flavors.
Water Process (non-Swiss): Similar to the Swiss Water Process, but a different method of caffeine removal is used.
      3) Carbon dioxide (CO2) method:
In this method, liquid carbon dioxide is used to extract caffeine from the coffee beans. The CO2 binds selectively with caffeine, and the caffeine-laden CO2 is then separated from the beans.
      4) Triglyceride method:
Coffee beans are soaked in a solution of water and coffee oils, and the caffeine bonds with the oils. The mixture is then heated, and the caffeine-laden oils are separated from the beans.
It's important to note that the choice of decaffeination method can impact the flavor profile of the coffee. Some methods aim to preserve more of the original flavor compounds, while others may result in a slightly altered taste. Additionally, new methods or variations may have been developed since my last update in January 2022.
