  • I spent 10+ hours digging into Rinotuna's drawing process so you guys don't have to! But, everything that I share in this video, purely comes from my own observation. Please take it with a little grain of salt. I am open to any critique/suggestion so we can improve together! I wanted to make a longer video with deeper details, but I'm afraid it will be boring... If this one turns into a success, I will make another one with an even deeper analysis!
    After watching the process, I realized I lack a lot of things. I highly suggest you all go check him out if you are interested to learn more. Anyway, I have just started my art journey seriously this January! I am new to the art field and stuff, so I really need your help here. *side note: sorry for my bad English in the video.

    4:52 After duplicating the base color layer, Rino locks the transparency and presses alt+del to fill the layer with his main color (gray in this case). He does the same thing when adding color to his shadows, like in 7:00
    In step 5, as you said, Rino uses the wand tool to select colors in the base color layer. You can have the same result in CSP if you use the wand tool (called Auto Select in CSP) and make sure to disable "Apply to connected pixels only" in the tool properties. That way you can click one area and select every area with the same color.
    In step 6, the thing he uses here is called "Quick Mask". In CSP you can find it under the Select menu at the top left.
    In step 7, Rino is trying to darken the lineart where needed. Idk if he does it in the clip that you are using for reference, but after using Tone Curve he tends to make some extra changes with a brush. Mainly darkening the lineart in the shadows.
    Apart from some little things, the process in this video is similar to the one in his course. Good job with the video and illustration!

    A CSP user here. So the method to change the color within the layer is to use "Lock transparent pixels." It's in the same row as clipping mask. After you select the lock transparent pixels, use a bucket tool or any brush to paint or fill over. Then done! Hope this helps. I enjoy this video a lot! I look forward to see more in the future! :)

      Also the selection part at step 6. Hold CTRL and click on the layer (specifically the layer canvas, not the name), and invert the selection.

      @@PlepPeroni Actually, I believe what he did was just use the shortcut of ''convert drawing to color'' that you can find in the ''edit'' settings on the top, this option flawlessly changes every single color of the layer to the one you have, and if you are selecting something it will only change the color of the area you are selecting, its extremely handy so its good to have it as a shortcut or in your command bar on top!

    So this is basically "i try to do Rino's style, but i take EXTRA, MANY EXTRA steps"
    For step 6, it's way more easy than you think. CTRL+Click on the thumbnail of Layer 5, this will select the shadows in this layer, then press CTRL+SHIFT+i to revert the selection (So anything that isn't covered by the shadow layer is selected instead, in this case, the lights), then simply fill the selection and you will have the same result.

      Heya! Thanks for the input, I've taken similar tips from others too, thank you so much this will help a lot! And btw, Rino's steps are even more extra than what I have shown 😂.. there was a video, where he spent 10 hours only on a single character. But yeah, some of the hassles you see in the video come from me not knowing what he did, so if you're calling that as the extras, you're totally right! ahaha

    This is a great video! I know that a lot of people have already answered questions you had about some of rinotuna's process but I just wanted to point out at 13:05 when you're talking about the fill of the layer, this is essentially the same as opacity in CSP. In Photoshop, fill only refers to the pixels that have been either drawn or made by shapes directly on the canvas, but opacity refers to the whole layer and will change the transparency of layer styles in PS (ie, outline, bevel and emboss etc)
    CSP doesn't have this because it has minimal layer styles, but considering rinotuna didnt apply any layer styles to that particular layer anyway it doesn't really make a difference. Good job!

    if you lock the transparency of a layer, you can fill the layers pixels with any color you desire. it will stay the same level of opacity no matter what you do. you can even do a gradient over that layer to make the shadows more saturated and light towards the light source and darker and greyer away from it, giving the art and extra level of depth with little effort!

    7:31 Other comments have already suggested methods but there’s another way that might or might not be a bit more like what Rinotuna is doing in photoshop. It’s a bit much to explain at first but once you’ve done it you’ll see it’s dead simple. Basically, you can tint an entire layer any color you want, non-destructively (the layer’s original color is preserved and the effect can be reversed in one click) using an Effect in Layer Property. I think it’s similar to the Convert to Drawing Color technique but I’m not sure of all the differences because I basically use this instead of that.
    To do this, there’s a button all the way to the right of the top row of buttons (the one with the lighthouse in it) in your Layer tab. You’ll need to widen your layer tab to reveal it. It’ll look like a primary/secondary color selection thing, two stacked squares. By default the primary one is blue and the sub color is white and when you click it, it’ll tint your entire layer non-photo blue.
    Now obviously you want to adjust this color. To do that, you’ll need to add the Layer Property tab to your workspace. Find the Window drop-down menu at the top of your CSP uhhh… window, and check Layer Property. I keep my Layer Property tab nested with my Layer tab so it’s out of the way whenever I’m not using it but stick yours wherever you feel like it should go. Now that you have the layer color effect activated, you’ll find a swatch of that color next to the label ‘Layer color’ under the Effect heading in the Layer Property tab. Clicking on this swatch will bring up its own Color Setting window, where you can access your color wheel, sets, history, whatever method you want to use to set the color the layer is tinted to. Oh, also there’s a button to activate the layer color effect in the Layer Property tab in case you don’t want to widen your Layer tab to reveal the button there. It looks similar (stacked squares) and is also the one all the way on the right.
    Two quick tips for using this technique:
    • I recommend painting in black on any layer you plan on tinting with the layer color effect. You’ll get the most predictable results this way. For the workflow you’re using here, you would tint the layer gray before you start painting shadows and then you’d pick black as your paint color - the end result will still come out whatever shade of gray you set as layer color. Any color that is not black will just give you a more faded value of that color. When it comes time to change the color of that layer it’ll be super easy because you already have the layer color effect active on that layer and you can click through different color options and see the results instantly before committing.
    • If you want to go back into a layer that has the layer color effect applied and fine tune just parts of it - shift the colors here and there - it won’t show up the way you want as long as the effect is active. No matter what color you use in that layer, it’ll all get tinted the layer color. You will have to right click on the layer and apply Rasterize. The Rasterize function in CSP does more than the name implies. In addition to converting vector layers and smart objects into bitmap, it also deactivates effects by baking them into the layer. Afterwards you can lock transparency if you want and paint whatever color you like on the layer and those colors will now show up as normal.

    This is such an informative video and great breakdown! Love to see how other artists work! Your illustration turned out beautifully!! Love the design and the colors!
    At 14:18 i wanted to mention as a CSP user, I'm not sure if it got mentioned by others already, but you can extend the fill tool to also go underneath the lineart. An option you can enable is "area scaling" and you can increase or decrease the amount so then the fill can extend past the lineart. I also recommend working with aliased (hard edge) so you don't get a "halo" when selecting from your flats layer. I used to draw and fill like Rino did but when working with so many details it's so much more efficient to turn on reference layer and fill.
    Keep up the good work!

    • @Inolicious.
      @Inolicious.  ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow thank you so much! I will try your input soon... Btw the one you mentioned about "hard edge", I don't quite get it... should I do the line art with higher opacity brush or is it a feature? 😅

    • @defenestratin
      @defenestratin ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Inolicious. The option is anti-aliasing! You can definitely lineart still with brushes with “soft” or feathered edges, but for flats it’s good to decrease anti aliasing until the point you’re working with essentially pure pixels :3 when you zoom in it should look like pixel art. Like I said it eliminated that halo effect when coloring and shading based on flats.

In that folder contain base shade layer, and upper it i duplicate base color layer, click ctrl+U and adjust saturation to max. Then i change layer mode to color and adjust the opacity to make it suitable. The function of that color mode layer is to make the shade not too pale. And i usually i add brightness mode layer (from duplicated base color without ctrl+U) below the color mode layer to make some adjusment since the shade of dark color is different with lighter color.
