Not only proud of his work, but truly fascinated by the writing, editing, directing, cinematography, etc. TD was a masterpiece in every one of cinema categories.
McConaughey's acting has gone through the stratosphere this past year. Wolf of Wall Street - excellent role, stole the scene. Dallas Buyers Club - phenomenal performance, both physically and mentally. True Detective - slow burning brilliance. Thumbs up to you Mr McConaughey. I salute you!
Totally agree. Fantastic show altogether, and macconaughey was simple perfection in all three periods. He has had such a progression over these last couple of years that it's just amazing.
Even if someone doesn't like the show, they cannot deny, that Matthew's acting was off the fucking charts. Oh and and don't forget about Woody Harrelson, he was very very good as well
What's pretty interesting is that his performance is the most hypnotic on this show when he's doing the least as possible. Just sits, walks, broods, reminisces. All slowly, barely even moving. A truly magnetic and misteryous performance, where "less is more" applies quite accurately. He just simmers.
To me it represents the end of a age when we got less information, it is in 95, the internet was just coming along, it was the end of a time when we were not overwhelmed with so much data, i honestly miss those days and think that is part of the reason i connect with the character on a deeper level.
googleiscomplicated If you connect with Cohle, it means that you have at least a small understanding of what it means to be human. It is easy to get keep blinders on in life, but Cohle is more comparable to having x-ray vision. Awareness. Let's you see yourself for who it really is.
McConaughey is reaching really high levels... Like Daniel Day Lewis Sean Penn levels.. The character he played in this show was something special man.. Holy shit was he good in this..
halochampion342 Not even close? I agree DDL is the best, but to say that he isn't even close is an exaggeration and you know it.. And besides I gotta think its a little easier to get into characters when you only make movies every 5 years...
halochampion342 Far more range? Explain that... Because that literally makes no sense.. "range" in acting is defined by how many different types of characters you can play.. Matthew has played about 5x the amount of characters, and although not all of his movies are great, neither are DDL.. I think what you meant to say is that he can dive deeper into his characters, which I agree... But like I said in my original comment, he is reaching those levels.. Maybe not yet reached, but perhaps will one day...
He didn't say that the character was boring, he meant he find him difficult to play, it requires more discipline and sometimes actors don't like that. Cole 95 wasn't boring but from Matt perspective playing Cole 95 was and actors feel that sometimes.
I think because 1995 Cohle has the most longer screentime and took like 4 episodes in for showing us some thrilling scene, he has the first 5 episodes whereas the 2002 and 2012 are in the last 4 episodes combined

Still to this day the best and greatest show. You and Woody created a once in a lifetime work of art, so on behalf of everyone, thank you! True Detective is much more than a show to us.
I know I'm late but just binge watched first season!!! Incredible characters and acting, Matthew and Woody together were hypnotic and couldn't stop watching. Starting 2nd season, sad because I know it can't possibly be as good as the first with those two in it. Thanks Matthew and Woody!!!
Matthew McConaughey is only 45 years old but it feels like he's been acting for over 50 years! What a brilliant actor, very underrated despite he won an Oscar last year.
95 Cohle was intense in a calm way. You throw a plastic can of gasoline on a red hot bed of coal just waiting for it to catch fire. A guy tormented by his own and the surrounding existence. You just sat there and waited for him to ignite. Best role ever in TV history.
Rustin Cohle is one of the best and most interesting characters I've ever had the chance to watch, specially the 1995 Cohle. He doesn't need to draw on any wild or over the top attitude to be interesting. McConaughey's acting is just amazing in this show, his best performance ever.
it really impressed me. I think, last time a show impressed me like this... it was Twin Peaks. Really good. He's amazing. I've seen all of his latest stuff these years - this is the one that impressed me more. McConaughey....I forgive you for that oscar thing. You deserved it, in the end
What oscar thing? I really liked it. If you're talking about him thanking god, that only makes the fact that he could pull off such a hardcore atheist character more impressive.
Quinn Kurmaskie what?......no, there's a misunderstanding! I was joking about the fact he won over Di Caprio. I do not mind if people thank God or their dog, It's his award, he can say what he wants! And by the way, an actor is an actor because he portraits someone else, not himself.
KremIsis I am a huge fan of Dicaprio but it just so happens that Mcconaughey REALLY did deserve to win over Dicaprio. If you watch Dallas Buyers Club, you'll see where I'm coming from. I honestly didn't think Mcconaughey had that performance in him. Blew me the hell away.
James Bash I saw DBC, I would never speak if I hadn't. I agree he's great, but if you are familiar with his work, you should admit it was not that original. It was, essentially, 100% McConaughey. I love his performance, I loved him as an actor since he decided to make serious movies like Mud (great one) but Di Caprio is just...he can be everything. McConaughey doesn't. He's himself, always. In his characteristic, fantastic way. But Leo? He's something more. In the end, who cares about the Oscar. People all around the world go and watch Di Caprio because they trust his genius. These days the world is mourning RW's death. He won only once. But still, he made plenty of movies everybody watched. And every time you see one of them, first thought is "unbelievable...". We were so used at his talent, it seemed to be obvious he could do whatever he wanted to. The same is, I guess, for Leo. But when McConaughey is really great, we're shocked, so we give him an Oscar, leaving poor Leo speechless.
I loved the " '95 Cohle" .. I loved all of it. I NEVER watch shows like this with a murder/detective/action bent and no (or minimal) comic relief from the violence and horror. My husband had the second episode on and I watched a minute or two and I was hooked. I went back to the first episode and watched the rest week to week with growing excitement and anticipation and unlike some people, I was totally rewarded with what, for me, was an amazing ending. I don't know if it was the music, the characters, the acting, the gorgeous, yet rotting bayou or a certain je ne sais quoi but I fell in love. I'm thinking that there is NO WAY the next season can be as good but maybe I'm wrong. Apparently, Nic Pizzolatto is a genius.
dornerd There will be another season, it will just be a new story with different characters. I also think it will be hard to top their first season, but hopefully we're wrong.
For me it was just a perfect storm. I'm probably one of the few people out there who had ever heard of "The King in Yellow," and when I heard about the connection (at the same time I was taking a course in the gothic, too) I knew I had to see this show. Then there were the acting (and the actors), the characters (especially Rust), the story, the philosophy, and to top it all off that awesome opening sequence. What's not to love? (Well, actually, it has a lot of things that I generally can't stand, like tons of f-bombs, smoking, gratuitous female nudity, though at least they didn't go overboard like Game of Thrones - but those things just didn't matter to me - it was that good.)
This is the product of such a strong script. Mathew is a skilled actor, that he brings the character to life in such a seamless way that its hard to distinguish if its acting or not.
The more I see of Matthew McConaughey, especially in this type of scenario, the more I respect him as an actor. I'm on my 3rd watching if True Detective now, just can't get enough of it. It doesn't hurt that in this video he is looking incredibly gorgeous.
A Masterpiece of film. Cannot understand why it has not received more universal recognition. From the opening theme song (Far From Any Road) to the inspiring end….what a gift.
Just watched the last episode of True Detective and I have to say that this was a work of art. The characters, the script, the acting - brilliant, all the way through, an absolute masterpiece!
Man, I saw him in TV first, then came here. Damn! the voice, look, speech pattern, etc. Shows you how good of an actor he is. It really put an idea in my mind that his real self is what he is in True Detective, but man was I wrong.
I didn't think he was boring at all ! This could not be any more exciting ! I also have a new favorite actor . He puts his all into it , and becomes who he's portraying . Plus he's just cool !
Matthew McConaughey went from a Gimmick actor who had a good role every once and a while, and couldnt seem to get the "right" serious role. I think people have always liked him but no one has ever called him a great actor or their favorite. Now after Lincoln Lawyer, Mud, Dallas Buyers Club, and most notably True Detective, he has become a favorite of mine, and arguably the best actor RIGHT NOW. Hes on a roll, he has found the right projects and is showing the world how great of an actor he really is. It kind of amazed me to see this guy act so fuckin well.
BaByUzii He's going to be in Gus Van Sant's Sea Of Trees next year with Ken Watanabe. And then he's going to work on a civil war drama with Gary Ross. I think he's got it covered :)
I think this work is McConaughey's best work ever.. And Woody who did Natural Born Killers, we all know he has that other side to him, but the comedy and relationship between these two partners are awesome... Good work. I hope we have many episodes to come.. GOOD STUFF..
oh god when you have inspire you create the best creatures in the world! Matthew is one of them...and that voice just...AMAZING!!!!! Matthew congratz for everything! one of the best actors ever...love you!!!!!!
I didn't consider Mathew second guessing the early parts. They resonated with me so perfectly. The whole show was so very beautiful. Woodie nailed it , as well as all the supporting cast. Can you imagine if they didn't and Mathew was the only shining star?!! We definitely wouldn't be talking about it years later.
Rustin Cohle in True Detective is Matthew McConaughey's best work ever! I've seen his movies in the past, (had to binge watch on the ones I had missed then repeat the ones I watched before) and I have to say, he is truly magnetic on screen. Heck! His screen presence was so powerful in "Reign of Fire" it wouldn't have surprised me if the dragons ran out for cover! Over the past few years, he was able to show his wide range of acting through movies wherein he played characters with specific IDENTITIES; The Lincoln Lawyer, Killer Joe, Mud, Bernie, The Wolf of Wall Street, Dallas Buyers Club, Magic Mike, all very deliberate as he aptly describes it. He was good in Frailty, Lone Star, A Time To Kill, Dazed and Confused, and in all those feel good movies in the past. He could forever play a Texan with that distinct drawl in all his characters, I would not mind at all. His interviews are so fun to watch! He is a very good story teller specially when he talks about his family, his experiences. I like how he genuinely loves his craft and how happy he gets whenever someone tells him they watched the show! So sad there's no more Rustin Cohle, it'd be a lot cooler if he comes back! Just keep livin' man!
They should make show named "Crash", about Rust McCohle before -95 he is very intresting chatacter with very intresting past, stories that he told in True Detective
One of the best performances I have seen by an actor, a role he was born to do. I am a big geek when it comes to movies and series, seen pretty much everything, still I return to youtube to see Rust Cohle work his magic.
The '95 Cohle was the most amazing character introduction since the Joker's pencil disappearing scene. I was just talking to my girlfriend a few weeks ago(before I started watching TD) how none of the tv shows currently work for me, when along came Rust Cohle and instantly won me over.
I never though much about McConaughey's acting until True Detective but holy shit, he was incredible. So good in fact that I've rewatched it at least 10 times and it still feels fresh
+Kiano Uy (Moop Stark) Well it doesn't have to be you. We should raise money for the thing though. It could be like 10x the size of the statue of liberty or something, made of some nigh indestructible material so it could last for billions of years.
True Detective is an amazing show Cohle is my favorite character in the show Matthew mcconaughey is an amazing actor and as executive producer and i can't wait for season 2 of True Detective.
from a time to kill i think we all knew that this guy has got the talent. He's always had the fantastic ability he was just doing the wrong films. I loved him in Mud and Dallas Buyers Club, but his role in True Detective was one of the greatest characters i saw and mcconaugheys potrayal was one of the best things i have ever seen an actor do
before i watched true detective i thought Matt McConaughey is a pretty solid actor, when i saw him there i had to admit he is totally brilliant. he and Woody Harrelson play it so real to life that´s just near to perfection. best american tv show i have ever seen.
He’s like the ONE actor I’ve seen who actually seems proud of his work beyond just telling people to watch it on a talk show. 99.9% of actors you can tell they literally haven’t seen their own movies or TV shows.
My favorite scene was when he knocked out the mechanic with the tool box when they were looking for the "bunny ranch". Always wanted to do that to a punk.
There must be something in him that aided him in radiating that nihilistic aura within the show. Just pure emptiness. Torn apart. Right up there with Brando's Kurtz.
So thankful we are getting more and more Hollywood A listers coming in and doing television series... For them to do this, it is less about the money and more about doing work that is truly profound. We are definitely in a golden age of television.
i love how happy he gets when he realizes that people love the show, "it's good isn't it?" a man proud of his work.
In one interview he almost jumped out of his chair in excitement when the interviewer told him he'd seen 3 episodes. Love him.
Well deserved
im in tearsss
Not only proud of his work, but truly fascinated by the writing, editing, directing, cinematography, etc. TD was a masterpiece in every one of cinema categories.
@@cockroachv I just bought all three season's on BluRay in a set on Amazon $35 and some change.
I salute you!
because of reasons above I can't wait for Interstellar!

Not to forget his performance in MUD.
and Killer Joe
Eight of the greatest hours of television film you will ever, ever see.
Damn straight!
Along with band of brothers 🙌🏼
Finally someone says true detective is the best & not breaking bad
Should've cut figurines out of beer cans while answering questions!
0:20 love the way his face lights up when talking about TD. You can tell the passion he had for the show
He must have known he was doing something special. He's been around for a long time. I have watched TD many times and never tire of it.
taimur74 Highlight of this interview.
The passion came through in his performance. He completely embodied rust cohle and gave the world the best tv character of all time.
What's pretty interesting is that his performance is the most hypnotic on this show when he's doing the least as possible. Just sits, walks, broods, reminisces. All slowly, barely even moving. Ryan Nelson no, it was very very good.
Jack Max
my fault. you're right.
+Michael Voorhees well just season 1
***** Lol. True. Season 2 was a huge disappointment... :(

loved his acting man. i fucking binge watched the first season of true detective because of matthew.
Funny. 1995 Cohle is my favorite. I don't find him boring at all... The script and depth of the character at that time is enough.
need to give credit to Ligotti where 95 Cohles lines came from
1995 Cohle is the best thing of the show.
He didn't say that the character was boring, he meant he find him difficult to play, it requires more discipline and sometimes actors don't like that. Cole 95 wasn't boring but from Matt perspective playing Cole 95 was and actors feel that sometimes.

All stages where amazing...i can´t pick the best =S

How did you feel about season 2? Obviously it’s hard to top s1 but I thought the second one was great. Gets unnecessary hate
Matthew McConaughey will live throughout the ages. He is an will be one of the best actors ever born for the next century. Mark my words.
Matthew McConaughey gave without a doubt his all time best performance in True Detective!
Matthew McConaughey is only 45 years old but it feels like he's been acting for over 50 years! What a brilliant actor, very underrated despite he won an Oscar last year.
He would win more. Dallas Buyers Club and True detective is setting the fire on.
95 Cohle was intense in a calm way. You throw a plastic can of gasoline on a red hot bed of coal just waiting for it to catch fire. A guy tormented by his own and the surrounding existence. You just sat there and waited for him to ignite. Best role ever in TV history.
His character is interesting AF
Rustin Cohle is one of the best and most interesting characters I've ever had the chance to watch, specially the 1995 Cohle. He doesn't need to draw on any wild or over the top attitude to be interesting.

TD season 1 is a masterpiece
he is such an Amazing & Adorable actor .. loved him more after True Detective
McConaughey at his best... Such a great clip and explanation about True Detective.
That guy is a masterpierce. best actor ever in my humble opinion.
Rust could've only by played by that man, he made the serie even better, I think.
I love how excited he gets about this show. Its a true gem.

TD s1 is my favourite show of all time and I'm a television obsessive. It blew me away.

He's the epitome of a true actor. It's not easy to develop a good character and he is, in my opinion, a real master of the craft.
I love this guy. The fact that he's a good person makes him that much more special.
McConaughey killed it in True Detective. Such an amazing actor, I'm definitely a new fan.
Love his gestures, love his acting. Amazing.
excellent interview :)
This man is a gift from God someone build him a statue
Michael Tault Sorry, I lack the necessary skills for that.
+Kiano Uy (Moop Stark) Well it doesn't have to be you.
We should raise money for the thing though. It could be like 10x the size of the statue of liberty or something, made of some nigh indestructible material so it could last for billions of years.

matthew you are the man GREAT performance.....my friend
True Detective is an amazing show Cohle is my favorite character in the show Matthew mcconaughey is an amazing actor and as executive producer and i can't wait for season 2 of True Detective.
Thta voice, its so relaxing.
Such a good actor.
0:22 the smile of a man who's proud of his work.
thanks guys for this, it's the first serie i finished after "Lost" and for sure i will watch the next seasons..
What a very generous individual he is.
Hs finest acting role yet!!
The writers should be given the equivalent of an academy award
Fantastic show and McConaughey is brilliant
I just started watching it.
Love it
So cool that he didn't jump ahead and stayed in the moment to watch the season play out as we all did!
from a time to kill i think we all knew that this guy has got the talent.
This show, his performance, damn, magnetism. That character is part of my fantasy now.
Cohle no tiene nada de aburrido, es un súper personaje.
I mean, Matthew McConaughey! One of the Greats. And a Southerner to boot!
Great stuff, Matthew.
Greatest mini series of all time
OH MATTHEW YOU ARE SO COOL
He did an amazing job on True Detective.
This video is when Mr. McConaughey became my man crush.
There must be something in him that aided him in radiating that nihilistic aura within the show. Just pure emptiness. Torn apart. Right up there with Brando's Kurtz.
You are/were terrific Matthew McConaughey.
such an awesome guy
ALL THESE INFLECTIONS!
I wish the show never ended.
So thankful we are getting more and more Hollywood A listers coming in and doing television series... For them to do this, it is less about the money and more about doing work that is truly profound. We are definitely in a golden age of television.
i like 95 cohle as well :) He is just so intense even when he doesn't do much!
Matthew McConaughey would make a dashing Abe Lincoln
he is a talented actor plain and simple.
the guy is a top bloke and great actor
His 95 Cole was, to me, the best part of the show, actually. So much is going on behind his eyes. In silence. Brilliant show and role.
That guy... I love that guy!
