    Utterly masterful. Some actors can truly become a character in such a way that, not only do you forget it's acting but you know that only they could have made it as great as it was.

    I honestly think the scenes with Phoenix and Hoffman are the best one-on-one acting I've ever seen - by which I mean I don't think I've seen an example of two actors who are both as good as these two are here in the same scene.

      I agree in that this is one of my favorite acting moments in any film, but I'm not sure how much Hoffman really *does* in this scene. Don't get me wrong, I love him in this movie, but this scene is mostly Phoenix being incredible (and the lack of music or edits - there is just NO emotional distance between the viewer and Phoenix in this scene).

    PT Anderson reached some kind of new height with The Master. I had pretty high expectations after There Will Be Blood, yet he still managed to completely blindside me and exceed my expectations with this film. When I first heard he was making "the Scientology movie," I was, like many people, a bit curious and unsure of where he was going to go with that subject matter. And instead of doing some kind of straightforward, specific biopic or docudrama (something far too prosaic and mundane for an artist like Anderson), he used the whole idea of cults and the archetypal master-follower dynamic as a kind of philosophical metaphor, and a vehicle to explore some of the deepest, most subtle aspects of human existence. This film has so many layers to it, and is so conceptually complex that I felt compelled to go see it several times before the end of its theatrical run. It seemed to be concerned with themes and ideas that I'd rarely seen explored so deeply in a movie, things which have thrilled, vexed, haunted, saddened and confounded mankind for centuries. One usually has to read a great novel to experience the depth of insight and expression found in The Master. And of course we can't talk about it without mentioning how goddamn breathtakingly beautiful it is, just on a purely aesthetic level. The poetic, 70mm visuals, Johnny Greenwood's dreamy musical score (and the lovely period tunes)... I mean it truly left me reeling that first night I saw it. I remember walking out of the theater in a daze almost, and just being completely bewitched by it, intoxicated almost. Not many films (especially nowadays) can have that powerful of an effect.

    • @futuropasado
      @futuropasado 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The Master for me is his definitive masterpiece, a top tier form of cinema, specially nowadays is bold, it has many layers to it. I'm just sad that many people only takes the cult and scientology theme, there's so much more themes as metaphors... I watched 4 times already. With 1 time it's impossible to grasp half the density of the film... I'm sure it's already one of the greatest films of this century and will be underrated for years to come until more people dig into it, with a more open mind or spiritual searching for the meaning of human condition.

    What I like about this sequence is that it shows the legitimacy of the "Cause" movement. In between all of Dodd's lies & manipulation there lies a grain of truth here. People will refer to this movie as the "Scientology movie", and denounce everything the characters preach, yet, in one beautiful sequence we're presented with something positive & good. No matter your attitudes about the cult or practice, in this sequence it shows how it can legitimately help someone. I thought it served to help a viewer wrestle with their ideas concerning the characters and motivations.

      Totally agree with you serpico, in fact Freddie truly respects and loves his "master" because he found sort of psychic relief thanks to him....even after he left because he didn' t wanna join his cause anymore.

    This movie was very close to heart for Joaquin as he also struggled with Alcoholism in the early 2000's until 2005 when he decided too go to the rehab. Now he is completely sober. He already knew how to act like an Alcoholic because he was one himself in the past.
    Oh BTW... Joaquin will nail the part of the joker ;]🤡👌😊

      Bijinius Cross Phillip is a great actor, but I find it hard to respect a drug addict. You had all the talent in the world and nothing but opportunity and you threw it all away to get high. Weak.

    • @BlazerManiacNumber96

      MetalGecko87 Tell that to Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Prince, Amy Whinehouse, Kirk Cobain, Billy Mays, Heath Ledger and all the others who killed themselves for this stufd. Hell tell that to Joaquin Pheonix and see if he agrees. His brother died at only 23 years old because of drugs. They do not make people better, they ruin them. Look at homeless junkies on the street, they are not profound, they are sad. PSH would have been just as good, if not better if he was sober.
      As for "we are all a drug addict in some way" if you mean we are all addicted to something that is not good for us, then I agree. If you mean literally we are all drug addicts then no.

    When actors achieve this kind of brilliant synergy, it takes me back to Lecter and Clarisse. Surely, both these men are among their generations 10 best actors. Wow. Wow. Wow, this scene inspired by Scientology's "audits." And surely Paul Thomas Anderson is on the short-short list of best living directors. Boogie Nights. Magnolia. There Will Be Blood. The Master. Who else in Christ's name is better? Not even Tarantino or Fincher or Inarritu or Nolan or anyone. I think Anderson just passed everyone.
