- Urban sketching can be a scary subject! The scene changes constantly, it's hard to get comfy, and with the best will in the world it's not as easy as from the comfort of our desk.
In this video, I'll show you a relaxed and loose way to sketch that will make it feel way more achievable when you come to give it a go!

Feels like a useful video to have watched prior to coming to Bath next week to your course! I’ve been sneaking out of the house early in the morning to practice my ‘en plein air’ sketching whilst the streets are quiet! Really looking forward to it! 🙂
Another fun and informative video! It was interesting the way you dealt with the large tree with those confident and interesting lines.

I was drawing as I listened to the video, and trying to stay as focused on the reference as possible. It was interesting when I looked at your work how much more you "zoomed in" the camera in your drawing...I never thought of doing that. I was trying to stay completely true to the reference, and I didn't realize that what I was doing didn't really look good composition wise. If I'd have only done what you did it would have looked much better. I'm totally going to do what you did in the future, it never even occured to me. Thanks for the good video!
I enjoyed watching you sketch. Thank you for the tips.
Thanks Toby, that was fun. Was just in the UK for 2 weeks for the first time and didn’t get to Bath. Was disappointed but look forward to a return trip to take in Bath. As always thank you for generously sharing your adventures! Cheers from Canada & US (we move between seasonally 😅)
Great video. Very helpful and fun to watch 🇦🇺🐦⬛
Lovely sketch! I'm surprised to see that the Tombow fude pen is waterproof. I thought they were water-based.
I can’t get away from my drawings having to be perfect and an exact replica of what I see. How do you break loose?
Giving yourself time limits can help.
A hard question to answer without examples of your work :) Little by little is probably the answer either way I guess :D
First!
Did you say handmade watercolours?
Yes
