Another World Longplay (Amiga) [50 FPS]: Face the unknown perils of an alien world in one of the most beautiful games ever made. Read the video description for my review!
I must have watched the first 5 minutes of this game 20 times - all I had was the PC demo at the time and it looked incredible but I never found out what happened next ... until now!
Parents are young, my brother and I get up in the middle of the night, put a blanket around the door so no light will seep thru the door. We would play it until I fall sleep watching my brother play. Childhood is somerhing else. Even when I was a child, I was aware of this. Good times, this calms me down.
So glad I found it back. My chidlhood, in my friend Omar's room, playing on his Amiga. We were amazed by Another World, Im sure its part of the reasons why my life has been so fullfilled by visions, other worlds, other dimensions, shamanism, second states etc etc etc. The great escape.
The hero is a white male. He would have to be replaced by a Diversity. Also the alien population lacks diversity also. Just seems all wrong for a modern movie.
You forgot a death sequence that almost nobody knew about! After the cage falls and your friend leaves, try standing still for several minutes! There is a surprise that has been there for 30 years!
Many yeears ago.. I remember getting stuck in the underground tunnels. Then some other day I played again and this time passed the tunnels. I got inspired and finished the whole game and called my friend to tell him about it :) The feeling of playing this game is magical in my memory. 💖💖💖
I only recently noticed that this version (just like the Atari St one that I noticed years ago) lacks a whole sequence starting @19:00. On the PC/Snes/Genesis versions, your alien friend actually doesn't drop you in front of the tank but rather in a different, upper part of the building and from there you have a pretty decent and intense sub-chapter to complete before you finally get to the tank.
I still remember (probably same year it came out) seeing the same intro those with also showing part of 1st level on a window of a computer shop, and I had still C64 back than. Fluency of animation of main character so amazed me, it was nothing like that I've seen before. As a long time computer user and a gamer, similar experience I had like this are extremely rare. Well done Chahi.
Yeah it's actually more possible to do that nowadays than it was back then. Free game engines mean you don't have to write your own in assembly like Eric had to XD
"My inspiration for the art style came partly from the technical choice to use polygons for the graphics and also from my love of fantasy illustrators such as Michael Whelan and Richard Corben. The Amiga was a revolution for me; its power and versatility allowed me to create Another World in a very fluid, improvisational way. I would often randomly sketch and explore different combinations of pixels to find the right feeling for a face or a shape. Deluxe Paint allowed me to do this very quickly. In fact, the software was so ahead of its time we were still using it on Heart of Darkness in 1997." -- Eric Chahi, designer, programmer and graphic artist (Another World/Out of this World, Amiga)
Holy crap, at 19:02 it skips a whole massive section in the city that's in the DOS version. Amiga version got jipped! I guess he was able to add it for the DOS release after he finished the Amiga one.
@@Domarius64 Not really, you have to use SoundBlaster 1 or the sound is full left or full right, don't remember, so sb1(mono) is the way. And the intro is a crackling fest, in DOSBox again, to be clear. I should mess with other options, no MT-32 support so I don't really care anyway, Amiga it is
Sooo much of an obvious influence on Ico. The fact that a game even comparable to that one was released in the same year as Super Mario World and Sonic 1 is just nuts.
Hmmm... experiment gone wrong, opens portal to another dimension, lands on alien planet. HALF LIFE? That cave ceiling monster with the tentacles also occurs in HL
I remember playing it around 1993 or so, being a pre-schooler. I had NO IDEA how to play this game - I think I managed to get as far as the big beast runaway in the beginning xD
I tried it on the A500 mini, I had to replay the first seconds of the game for about 30 times. I couldn’t get past those snails while I was jumping. My timing was off. Now I see that I have to stamp on it. Dammmm.
I also had no idea you could just kick the slugs... just played through it on a PS5 at normal. Died a bunch of times on the slugs when trying to jump over them and finally succeeded. The controls are so sluggish tbh, pun intended. Puzzle solving needs a definitive mindset and a bit of knowledge how these games generally work.
AMAZING! OH THE MEMORIES! after prince of persia! So groundbreaking at the time, an class soundtrack! born 74 these games were the soundtrack to my childhood !!! ONE LOVE!!!
Probably the first cinematic platformer/adventure game was Karateka, then Prince of Persia and then Another World. The difference is that Another World had more sophisticated animations and cutscenes never seen before. And it was made in the year when most people still had 8-bit computers and consoles unable to render any sophisticated animation.
I never knew the name of this game, only remembered the sounds made by the characters.. Didn't worked well, I bought it (diskettes) in argentina... I saw it in a MOMA Ted talk about video games as art... I can't believe this.. The internet is awesome
5,43: "Albersta, Albersta.. Wachenda, Wachenda" 😂😂😂 he is clearly calling for help and showing that Lester is trying to scape but I would like to know what did he exactly said
4:26-Wait. Wait a flipping minute. That sound the beast makes. It's the same as that tunnel worm in Alone in the Dark! That game used that creepy-ass sound AFTER Another world did?
Yes, you get to control the buttons - the only one you need to press is the top-left green (which activates the ejector). The rest fire various laser cannons and missiles into the arena - it's a rare moment of humour as you're the one with all the power at that moment.
I'm a bit late to the party here, but I was wondering something. How did you capture the game footage? I'd like to do some Amiga playthroughs for my channel, but can't seem to capture games full-screen.
Love this game and would love to finally complete it in this lifetime, but I just cannot get past the two big bastards that get you in the pincer movement at 15:24.....looks easy in the video, but it always takes too long for me to set up the forcefields and power up the gun for the big shot and I get zapped in mid-action..... :(
how could this game with those kinds of visuals have been created in 1991 like why didnt diffrent people who made games also use such good graphics for that time ?
True, this video is not 50 fps as it claims in the title, it's 25 fps, but Amiga could work in 25 interlaced mode if a game was so coded, which is basically 50 fps at half resolution...
@@maricallo6143And was it ever really used? I just get a bit grumpy by all these retro gaming videos that proclaim 50 or 60 FPS before that was ever a thing. Most of these games are probably only even rendering something 17 FPS, which is enough to establish basic motion that was smooth enough for the time.

Honestly but far the best amiga game. It just oozes class
My sharooba
that's not a game. it's a masterpiece.
indeed
several games have DIRECT references to this game, to mention 'Black the Fall' and 'Little Nightmares', perhaps showing some respect in such a way
Pssshhh
Yes
It builds such suspension right from the start
This game's art direction aged weirdly well, it still looks like a modern indie title
Thats because indies copy these old games like the hipsters they try to be

wtf
It's a Masterpiece
It was done with vectors, I think that is a huge part of it
The game was - still is - amazing. And even after so many years it STILL looks great!
no it does not look great come on
It has a unique look and style. I still think it is a very good looking game till this day.
As a game developer in 2022 it amazes me how complex a game from 30 years ago can be. Those developers really were something else

One of the favorite games of my childhood. The puzzles and action-packed scenes were great. Even the story was well told, all without saying a word.
Masterclass in art. How to create such an atmosphere in 8 shades of blue, grey and a splash of red
Bob Ross would have been proud of him. Just would have asked for some tiny little trees.

Who stayed til the end? Death sequences are awesome :)

Really cool game for it's time, I'm surprised someone hasn't made a movie based on it yet.
